On behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra) conducted an archeological survey for the proposed bridge construction along Business (BS) 71 East (71E) in La Grange at the Colorado River in Fayette County, Texas. Work consisted of visual inspection of the entire project area, including 100 percent pedestrian survey and excavation of 17 shovel tests and 11 backhoe trenches. Fieldwork was conducted May 15–17, 2019 by a team of two archeologists. Site 4.1FY509 was originally tested by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) archaeologists in April 1991. Based on the findings of the initial testing, the site was determined ineligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Because cultural deposits were discovered during construction, additional archaeological investigations were conducted by TxDOT archaeologists on the eastern portions of 41FY509, Plum, Fayette County, Texas. The recent investigations were conducted in the right-of-way of Highway 71 between centerline stations 395+00 and 390+00 of the Plum Bypass. Test excavations were conducted at Site 41FY111 by Alan J. Wormser of the cultural resources staff at the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT). The excavation was completed between March 30, and April 2, 1987, as part of a bypass project along SH 71 north of La Grange, Fayette County, Texas. Although the prehistoric remains were scattered over a broad area, most of the site was concentrated on top of knoll of cherty gravel deposits. Sites 41FY421, 41FY422, and 41FY424 are upland aboriginal sites situated on divides separating Robinson, Cedar, and Bartons Creeks in northwest Fayette County. These sites are characterized by generally shallow, un-stratified sandy deposits. The cultural inventory is limited to stone materials--primarily thermally altered chert and quartzite and lithic debitage. Diagnostic cultural indicators are relatively scarce, with a large majority of these being less than 2000 years in age. One site, 41FY422, produced 25 hearths and related features. Most of these are apparently less than 2000 to 3000 years in age as well.

Four prehistoric sites occurring within a one mile stretch of FM 153, ten miles northwest of LaGrange, Texas, were investigated in November, 1983. These sites were evidenced by light scatters of burned rock and lithic debris on the surface. Excavation revealed shallow sandy loam deposits containing very small amounts of cultural material. The portion of these sites within the FM 153 right-of-way have no potential for further work.

For a number of years, a proposed bypass around the city of LaGrange in Fayette County, Texas, has been in various planning stages with the ultimate objective of diverting highway traffic from the downtown area. Four possible routes have been studied in recent years, and a decision has now been made to proceed with Route A, the closest route to the city along the city's northern boundary (Fig. 1).

The site 41FY58 was discovered on U.S. 71 in eastern Fayette County and reported in 1973 by the survey archaeologist of the Texas Highway Department. Surface indications were highly encouraging and the site was recommended for extensive investigation.
