On February 3 of 2016, and on March 1 and 2 of 2017, archeologists from aci consulting conducted a pedestrian survey and backhoe trenching prior to construction of the eastern portion of the Bell County WCID No. 1 Treated Water Line (Phase II), in Bell County, Texas. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) for this investigation is the 50.5-acre (20.4-hectare) eastern portion of the treated water line, which is approximately 8.3 miles (13.4 kilometers) in length, with a 50-foot (15-meter) Right-of-Way (ROW). (MJC) on behalf of a private real estate developer to conduct an intensive cultural resources inventory and assessment for the proposed development of the Colonial Crossing apartment complex on a 5.1-hectare (ha) (12.5-acre [ac]) tract in Belton, Bell County, Texas. The proposed tract is located southeast of the intersection of State Highway (SH) 121 Loop and Farmto-Market Road (FM) 93 (also known as Nolan Valley Road). On January 15, 2015, archeologists from Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Environmental Affairs Division-Archeological Studies Branch conducted a reconnaissancelevel survey of 3 acres of a five acre tract adjacent to State Highway 317 in Bell County, north of the City of Belton. The property will be excavated for a stormwater retention pond. The survey found shallow rocky soils and exposures of limestone bedrock throughout the project area. Historic maps indicated a house structure with the project area. An archaeological survey of the proposed 209 acre City of Temple Recycling and Disposal Facility Expansion Project in Bell County, Texas was performed by Ed Baxter Consulting in January and February of 2015. Edward P. Baxter was the Principal Investigator and the Project Archaeologist. This study was carried out under Texas Antiquities Committee Permit Number 7143. The project area was investigated using the pedestrian survey method supported by shovel testing. In all, the project area consisted of 209 acres. In January 2004, Blanton & Associates, Inc., conducted an archeological survey of 8.5 hectares (21.1 acres) for a proposed roadway improvement and bridge replacement project (CSJ: 0396-04-059) along roughly 1,800 meters (m) of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) right-ofway where State Highway (SH) 317 crosses the Leon River in Bell County, Texas (Ringstaff 2004). That investigation consisted of three shovel tests, ten backhoe trenches, and five hand-excavated columns. Five backhoe trenches and the screened trench columns were excavated in the alluvial terrace on the southern side of the Leon River and encountered a single cultural component buried between 130 …

The survey focused on discovery, identification, and preliminary assessment of archeological resources. The area surveyed was about 3,220 m of public road right-of-way about 30 m wide. It consisted of about 24 acres of land.

A preliminary archeological investigation was conducted in 2008 at Roberts Cemetery near Troy, Texas, as part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s planned expansion of Interstate Highway 35. Mechanical trenching discovered one unmarked grave near the highway right of way, and this led to an extensive mechanical search of the eastern edge of the cemetery in 2012. Following the removal of the southbound access road and thick layer of artificial fill, five additional unmarked graves were discovered. In September 2013, American Archaeology Group LLC conducted an archaeological survey of three tracts of land along Nolan Creek totaling 8.68 acres for the City of Belton’s planned low water dam removal and replacement dam installed, development of a parking lot and trail for kayakers, and removal of a low water bridge crossing. These improvements are being funded by a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department grant. The investigation consisted of a pedestrian survey supported with mechanical trenching. In February and March 2004, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. (PAI), performed archeological test excavations at site 41BL1214 to determine its eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. This investigation was conducted within the existing and proposed right of way of the State Highway 95 bridge project at the Little River in Bell County for the Texas Department of Transportation. The site is situated on a flood terrace on the south bank of the Little River. In all, 18 m3 were excavated during testing. Testing of Site 41BL260 along the proposed FM 93 realignment in Be11 County, Texas was undertaken in December 1987 to determine the site's eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places, and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. The site is located in a plowed field near the eastern outskirts of Belton, Texas. Testing results indicate that the site is limited to the present plow zone and that no intact cultural deposits remain within the proposed right-of-way. Evidence recovered does not support a determination of eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Testing of Site 41BL301 on FM 3467 in Bell County, Texas, was undertaken in May 1986 to assess the site's potential for nomination as a State Archeological Landmark, and to determine site depth, cultural context and archaeological significance. The site is located along a second terrace on the south side of Nolan Creek in the western outskirts of Belton, Texas. The majority of the site lies outside the highway right-of-way along the terrace system. Results of the testing indicate that those portions of the site within the project limit contain a minimal prehistoric component--probably a lithic procurement source--of unknown age …
