This dissertation will explain the process and steps taken to prove the statement that using second language learning can improve self-esteem among K-12 homeless school children of Dallas, Texas. I began by researching the hardships that homeless students experience and then used that information to formulate a program in which I would teach basic French language and culture to a group of K-12 homeless students. Through the use of a valid and reliable self-esteem measurement survey, I was able to track changes in participant’s self-esteem to validate my hypothesis.

This Engaged Learning Project culminated in the production of a study guide titled “México: Entorno cultural y de negocios, guía práctica para entender las relaciones bilaterales entre México y Estados Unidos” [“Mexico: A Cultural and Business Environment, Practical Guide for Understanding Bilateral Relations between Mexico and the United States”] and a complete exam. First, this report explains the project’s purpose and goals. Second, the report explores the important concept of “test validity” in creating and organizing the project’s study guide and exam. I had always wanted a way to reach out to high school girls who faced the modern complexities of beauty; what is beautiful and how do we decide what is beautiful. My goal, through the teachings of photography, was to show the girls there is beauty all around us - in everyone and everything. The girls learned photographic basics as well as how to capture natural aesthetics. By encouraging their creativity and exploration of beauty, many of the girls found confidence in themselves as females and as artists, and produced beautiful photographs along the way.
