The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in …

Working Practices And Ethical Challenges Of Healthcare Interpreters As Institutional Agents Embedded In The Patients’ Community, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano Jun 2013

Working Practices And Ethical Challenges Of Healthcare Interpreters As Institutional Agents Embedded In The Patients’ Community, Maria A. Aguilar-Solano

Maria Aguilar-Solano

In the field of community interpreting, where interpreters’ role boundaries and positions are so diffused, interpreters are constantly struggling to position themselves as multi-cultural agents within public institutions. This paper focuses on a NGO of healthcare interpreters in southern Spain, composed mainly of foreign residents, which has shaped the structures of this field for over 25 years working at two hospitals. Their contribution has overshadowed the work of other healthcare interpreters in the area and provided them with a large volume of social capital—public recognition and awards, and symbolic capital—autonomy to shape their practice. Interpreters deploy these forms of capital …

Dynamics Of Civil Resistance In Oceania, Thomas Dick, Jason Mcleod, Luke Johnston Jun 2013

Dynamics Of Civil Resistance In Oceania, Thomas Dick, Jason Mcleod, Luke Johnston

Thomas Dick

The Dynamics of Civil Resistance (DOCR), is a not-for-profit popular education and cultural development programme in Oceania. We work in collaboration with churches, human rights organisations, traditional leaders, women leaders, youth and student groups and community organisations to establish a network of indigenous educators who can resource nonviolent social movements and democratic transitions.

DOCR has developed out of programs that originated in 2005, in response to requests from Papuan human rights activists (Rayfield and Morello 2012). The purpose of the Project is to build their capacity of activists and artists working nonviolently for a just and sustainable peace in the …

Creating Policy That Supports Living Cultural Expression In Melanesia, Thomas Dick Jan 2013

Creating Policy That Supports Living Cultural Expression In Melanesia, Thomas Dick

Thomas Dick

In Vanuatu, communities have expressed a desire to continue leading lifestyles based on a traditional economic base. In the context of economic globalisation, however, this possibility is being ignored or denied by government policy decisions made on the basis of ‘economic rationalism’. There is growing concern that these government decisions are in fact destructive of ‘popular cultural expressions’, and do not respect the values of the community in relation to its development.

In 2006, an ‘Economic opportunities fact-finding mission’ to the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu was sponsored by NZAID and AusAID. The report that followed recognized that ‘many of …

Post-Colonial Reflexivities Of Ni-Vanuatu Urban Youth In The Muisc Industry, Thomas Dick, Monika Stern Dec 2012

Post-Colonial Reflexivities Of Ni-Vanuatu Urban Youth In The Muisc Industry, Thomas Dick, Monika Stern

Thomas Dick

The urban music of “developing” countries is a privileged form of expression for young people. Across international borders, musicians identify with each other as opposed to “non-musicians”, but at the same time assert themselves as privileged messengers of the young people of their community, their town and, in some cases, their country in general. Music is often subject to the paradox between admiration and disapproval: the talented musician as star or idol, appearing in the media, wearing “in” clothes, etc, as opposed to the unstable musician who is drugged, alcoholic, unfaithful, incapable, etc.

Today, the nascent music industry in Port …

How Can We Nurture And Develop Creativity In First Year Design Students?, Kerry Meakin

Kerry Meakin

This research paper investigates the perceptions of first year third level design students in regards to their creative thinking and use of creative strategies, while studying a first year design based curriculum in an Institute of Technology in Dublin. The research aimed to question students in a three-phase, sequential project. The first phase, questioned twenty seven students by issuing anonymous questionnaires to gather data on their methods of incubating design ideas, if they experienced any levels of anxiety when doing so, and their satisfaction levels in their design and creative abilities. The Amazing J. Lawrence Cook Of Tennessee, Alan H. Wallace Oct 2009

The Amazing J. Lawrence Cook Of Tennessee, Alan H. Wallace

Alan H. Wallace

From the SEMLA report of the conference: Alan Wallace of the University of Tennessee gave a presentation on "The Amazing J. Lawrence Cook of Tennessee" that encouraged attendees to broaden their thoughts on the nature of artistic creation and recorded music. J. Lawrence Cook was a composer and arranger who throughout the course of his life created between 15,000 to 20,000 piano rolls for player pianos. Wallace discussed how the piano roll was the most common medium for recording and replaying music in an era before the widespread use of the phonograph and argued that the jazz music Cook cut …

Winning The Next War: Institutionalizing Lessons Learned From Today’S Regional Conflicts, William D. Wunderle Apr 2009

Winning The Next War: Institutionalizing Lessons Learned From Today’S Regional Conflicts, William D. Wunderle

William Wunderle

In the future, the United States military is more likely to undertake missions requiring irregular warfare capabilities, as opposed to traditional large-scale ground combat operations. These conflicts do not occur in a vacuum. Complex sectarian, ethnic, and tribal affiliations cross boundaries and require consideration of regional realities that impact the conflict. A key component of military readiness will be the ability to understand the cultures of, and communicate with, people from many regions of the world. Increased language and culture training will ultimately prove to be a powerful weapon in the American military’s arsenal.

The U.S. military now understands that …
