Applying The Canonical Text Services Model To The Coptic Scriptorium, Bridget Almas, Caroline T. Schroeder Dec 2016

Applying The Canonical Text Services Model To The Coptic Scriptorium, Bridget Almas, Caroline T. Schroeder

Caroline Schroeder

Coptic SCRIPTORIUM is a platform for interdisciplinary and computational research in Coptic texts and linguistics. The purpose of this project was to research and implement a system of stable identification for the texts and linguistic data objects in Coptic SCRIPTORIUM to facilitate their citation and reuse. We began the project with a preferred solution, the Canonical Text Services URN model, which we validated for suitability for the corpus and compared it to other approaches, including HTTP URLs and Handles. The process of applying the CTS model to Coptic SCRIPTORIUM required an in-depth analysis that took into account the domain-specific scholarly …

Reduplication, Ideophones, And Onomatoepoeic Repetition In The Yanomami Languages, Gale Goodwin Gomez Dec 2008

Reduplication, Ideophones, And Onomatoepoeic Repetition In The Yanomami Languages, Gale Goodwin Gomez

Gale Goodwin Gomez

The morphological process of reduplication occurs throughout the Yanomami languages of northern Amazonia. Onomatopoeia and the repetition of morphemes of apparent ideophonic origin are also common in the four major subgroups of the Yanomami language family: Yanomami, Yanomae, Sanuma, and Yanam. Reduplication has been specifically mentioned in grammatical descriptions of Yanomami (Ramirez 1994), Sanuma (Borgman 1990) and Yanam (Gómez 1990). Documentation of the Yanomami languages is ongoing, and grammatical descriptions are incomplete. Nevertheless, data from a thematic lexicon of Yanomae (Albert and Gómez, in prep.) highlights the frequent repetition of onomatopoeic forms, especially in relation to body movements, bodily functions, …

On Passive In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This paper examines two different passive formations in Malagasy. Although one passive appears to promote certain types of adjuncts, it is shown that these adjuncts can appear in an NP argument position. Passive in Malagasy is thus argued to uniquely promote NP arguments to subject position.

A Linguistic Solution To A Puzzle In Ben Jonson's Cary Morison Ode, Mohan Limaye Dec 1977

A Linguistic Solution To A Puzzle In Ben Jonson's Cary Morison Ode, Mohan Limaye

Mohan Limaye

At the end of the first stanza (line 9-10) of Ben Jonson's ode "To the Immortall memorie, and friendship of that noble paire, Sir Lucious Cary, and Sir H. Morison" we are presented with a puzzle. The poet mentions in the first stanza that the mythical "Brave Infant of Saguntum" goes back into its mother's womb, thus returning to its birthplace and making its mother's womb its "urne." The Saguntum child displayed a great deal of foresight, since by this act it avoided the catastrophe which would have befallen it at the hands of Hannibal had it entered the world. …
