Review: 'Improvising Improvisation: From Out Of Philosophy, Music, Dance, And Literature', Aili W. Bresnahan

Aili Bresnahan

This book review attempts to interpret the meaning and value of Gary Peters’ book in a way that is true to the kind of book, an experimental improvisation, that it purports to be. As such, it grapples with the difficulties of evaluating the merits of a philosophical discussion within a book that claims not to be philosophy and case studies in performance that beg the question of whether they accurately exemplify the (non-)philosophy they are meant to support. Despite these difficulties, this review ends with the conclusion that this book does, in fact, convey something essential about the nature of …

Orchestra Machines, Old And New, Jonathan De Souza Jul 2018

Orchestra Machines, Old And New, Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza

What is ‘orchestral’ about a networked laptop orchestra? And what is network-like about a classical orchestra? This article juxtaposes orchestras, nineteenth-century music machines, and twenty-first-century network music projects. Drawing on organology and cybernetics, it asks how these systems connect people and instruments. It considers interaction and coordination in particular networks, from the panharmonicon to PLork, but also their abstract informational topologies. Ultimately, orchestra machines, old and new, involve both technical and social organization—and, as such, they can be used to problematize the ontological separation of technology and society.

The Speed Of Our Mental Soundtracks: Tracking The Tempo Of Involuntary Musical Imagery In Everyday Life, Kelly Jakubowski, Nicolas Farrugia, Andrea Halpern, Sathish K. Sankarpandi, Lauren Stewart Jun 2018

The Speed Of Our Mental Soundtracks: Tracking The Tempo Of Involuntary Musical Imagery In Everyday Life, Kelly Jakubowski, Nicolas Farrugia, Andrea Halpern, Sathish K. Sankarpandi, Lauren Stewart

Andrea Halpern

The study of spontaneous and everyday cognitions is an area of rapidly growing interest. One of the most ubiquitous forms of spontaneous cognition is involuntary musical imagery (INMI), the involuntarily retrieved and repetitive mental replay of music. The present study introduced a novel method for capturing temporal features of INMI within a naturalistic setting. This method allowed for the investigation of two questions of interest to INMI researchers in a more objective way than previously possible, concerning (1) the precision of memory representations within INMI and (2) the interactions between INMI and concurrent affective state. Over the course of 4 …

Auditory Imagery And The Poor-Pitch Singer, Peter Q. Pfordresher, Andrea Halpern Jun 2018

Auditory Imagery And The Poor-Pitch Singer, Peter Q. Pfordresher, Andrea Halpern

Andrea Halpern

The vocal imitation of pitch by singing requires one to plan laryngeal movements on the basis of anticipated target pitch events. This process may rely on auditory imagery, which has been shown to activate motor planning areas. As such, we hypothesized that poor-pitch singing, although not typically associated with deficient pitch perception, may be associated with deficient auditory imagery. Participants vocally imitated simple pitch sequences by singing, discriminated pitch pairs on the basis of pitch height, and completed an auditory imagery self-report questionnaire (the Bucknell Auditory Imagery Scale). The percentage of trials participants sung in tune correlated significantly with self-reports …

A Mechanism For Sensorimotor Translation In Singing: The Multi-Modal Imagery Association (Mmia) Model, Peter Q. Pfordresher, Andrea Halpern, Emma B. Greenspon Jun 2018

A Mechanism For Sensorimotor Translation In Singing: The Multi-Modal Imagery Association (Mmia) Model, Peter Q. Pfordresher, Andrea Halpern, Emma B. Greenspon

Andrea Halpern

WE PROPOSE A NEW FRAMEWORK TO UNDERSTAND singing accuracy, based on multi-modal imagery associations: the MMIA model. This model is based on recent data suggesting a link between auditory imagery and singing accuracy, evidence for a link between imagery and the functioning of internal models for sensorimotor associations, and the use of imagery in singing pedagogy. By this account, imagery involves automatic associations between different modalities, which in the present context comprise associations between pitch height and the regulation of vocal fold tension. Importantly, these associations are based on probabilistic relationships that may vary with respect to their precision and …

Applying Brain Research To Classroom Strategies, John W. Flohr, Diane C. Persellin Jan 2018

Applying Brain Research To Classroom Strategies, John W. Flohr, Diane C. Persellin

Diane Persellin

Research in the field of neuroscience has exploded in the past decade. The word brain appears in the title of nearly 40,000 books and CDs indicating intense interest in this area of study. What can music educators learn from recent investigations—often termed brain research—to guide music teaching and learning? The following ideas are intended to have broad applications and may inspire you to investigate this fascinating area of literature more thoroughly. While some findings are new, other studies affirm what music educators have previously found to be effective.

The Effects Of Diegetic And Nondiegetic Music On Viewers’ Interpretations Of A Film Scene, Elizabeth M. Wakefield, Siu-Lan Tan, Matthew P. Spackman Jan 2018

The Effects Of Diegetic And Nondiegetic Music On Viewers’ Interpretations Of A Film Scene, Elizabeth M. Wakefield, Siu-Lan Tan, Matthew P. Spackman

Elizabeth Wakefield

Previous studies have shown that pairing a film excerpt with different musical soundtracks can change the audience’s interpretation of the scene. This study examined the effects of mixing the same piece of music at different levels of loudness in a film soundtrack to suggest diegetic music (“source music,” presented as if arising from within the fictional world of the film characters) or to suggest nondiegetic music (a “dramatic score” accompanying the scene but not originating from within the fictional world). Adjusting the level of loudness significantly altered viewers’ perceptions of many elements that are fundamental to the storyline, including inferences …

What Do You Give To A God Who Has Everything? "In The Bleak Mid-Winter", Leslie A. Engelson

Leslie Engelson

A discussion of Christina Rosetti and her poem "A Christmas Carol". A famous musical setting of this poem is by Gustav Holst and is where the title "In the Bleak Mid-Winter originated. Another setting, by Harold Darke is sung and broadcast every Christmas by the Kings College Choir at Cambridge. This essay also includes a personal account of the author's experience with the poem and it's meaning to her. The full text of the poem as well as the Holst version of the carol is also included.

Timbral Thievery: Synthesizers And Sonic Materiality, Jonathan De Souza Dec 2017

Timbral Thievery: Synthesizers And Sonic Materiality, Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza

Timbre often indexes an instrument’s materiality, and timbral variation often correlates with a player’s actions. Yet synthesizers complicate phenomenological links between sound and source. This chapter juxtaposes three instruments: an electromagnetic tuning-fork apparatus, developed by the nineteenth-century scientist Hermann von Helmholtz; the RCA Mark II, used by Milton Babbitt and other mid-twentieth-century composers; and the Yamaha GX-1, a large polyphonic synthesizer from the 1970s, played by Stevie Wonder and Keith Emerson. These synthesizers create new timbres and also imitate acoustic instruments, in a process that Robert Moog calls “timbral thievery.” Such imitations can provoke exaggerated or anxious discussions of synthetic …

Fretboard Transformations, Jonathan De Souza Dec 2017

Fretboard Transformations, Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza

This article develops a transformational approach to the fretboard, starting from the intersection of frets and strings. To overcome formal limitations of earlier models, it extends these two dimensions without limit, and then defines varied intervals and transformations in generalized fretboard space. Musical examples in the essay involve guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele, with extended analyses of pieces by Eddie Van Halen and Mark O’Connor. This investigation, with its blend of formalization and performance analysis, is framed by reflections on space, instruments, and embodiment, which juxtapose Lewinian thinking with the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty.
