Darwish And The Meaning Of Palestine, Leila Farsakh
Darwish And The Meaning Of Palestine, Leila Farsakh
Leila Farsakh
Darwish's poetry was a central part of what is to be a Palestinian and to be an Arab. By weaving the personal and the political, Darwish gave a voice to the Palestinian struggle for self determination, as much as to the human inner quest for love and survival. I grew up learning his poems, hearing them sung by famous Arab singers, repeated in worldwide demonstrations of solidarity with the Palestinian people. His departure left me, and a whole generation of Arabs, deeply bereaved for his death represented not simply the loss of a great poet, but also the necessity to …

Poetry And Diversity: The Power Of Miserly Words In Teaching, Samuel Hinton

I share perspectives on selected everyday issues that have a multicultural import. Some of the poems presented are from The Road To Kenema And Other Poems (2003). I contend that there is a connection between poetry and diversity, and that teachers could use poetry to introduce difficult topics, and develop critical thinking with their students in all disciplines.
Angel Island Poetry: Reading And Writing Cultures, Adam Kotlarczyk
Angel Island Poetry: Reading And Writing Cultures, Adam Kotlarczyk
Adam Kotlarczyk
Object of a darker chapter in American history, the Angel Island Poems (as they have become known) are a recently discovered body of over 135 poems, written primarily in Chinese. These were literally carved into the walls at the Angel Island Immigration Station, where Chinese immigrants were detained, sometimes indefinitely, between approximately 1910-1940. This lesson demonstrates how history and culture can be integral to our understanding of poetry, even poetry that is deeply reflective and personal in nature; by requiring students to model and produce their own poetry, it also makes evident that writing poetry is a creative instinct and …
Prairie Suite: A Celebration, Twyla Hansen, Paul A. Johnsgard
Prairie Suite: A Celebration, Twyla Hansen, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard
25 poems by Twyla Hansen, with illustrations by Paul A. Johnsgard, including: Walk on the Prairie There is mystery here, in the shapes of grass, in the dim movements of an inland sea, connections to an earlier time. Wander barefoot, hypothesize the dance of millennia, the unbearable carvings of the built environment, this ragtag escape. Let its divine simplicity ooze into your pores. Comb the steel from your hair, blanket your tongue with orange. Your breathing will slow. Breathing slow, unbutton the child within. Give her permission to go fly a kite.

Man Poems: From Beer And Gears To Grills And Girls, Christopher Ward
Christopher Ward
Man Poems: From Beer and Gears to Grills and Girls is a collection of poetry aimed at males between the ages of 20-40. From casual observation, including the spectacular wonders of alcohol and the female body, to the humorous: re-visiting the classic heavy rock hits of the 1980s, the varied works of Man Poems offer an interesting look into the mind and surroundings of author Christopher Ward.
