Food Matters: Alonso Quijano’S Diet And The Discourse Of Early Modern Food In Spain, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

In the second sentence of Don Quixote, Cervantes describes the diet of the protagonist, Alonso Quijano: “A stew made of more beef than mutton, cold salad on most nights, abstinence eggs on Saturdays, lentils on Fridays, and an additional squab on Sundays.” Through an inventive and original engagement with this text, Carolyn A. Nadeau explores the shifts in Spain’s cultural and gastronomic history. Using cooking manuals, novels, poems, dietary treatises, and other texts, she brings to light the figurative significance of foodstuffs and culinary practices in early modern Spain. Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Stephen Mennell, Food …

A Gastronomic Map Of Don Quixote Part 2

Carolyn A Nadeau

Food metaphors, culinary motifs, and gastronomic inquiry play a significant role in the development of Cervantes most renowned novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Readers may immediately recall the second sentence of the novel that portrays Alonso Quijano by his weekly diet to know that food and identity are inextricably linked. Additionally, food representations enliven the pages with semiotic clues that reveal the characters’ state of being; themes of ethnic, class, and social identities; and cultural norms of breaking bread, sharing meals, and lively post prandial discussions. These representations often serve to destabilize the text and …

Moscatel Morisco: The Role Of Wine In The Formation Of Morisco Identity, Carolyn Nadeau Jan 2013

Moscatel Morisco: The Role Of Wine In The Formation Of Morisco Identity, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

This article explores how Moriscos adapted to changing political pressures through the food and drink they consumed, specifically through their relationship to wine. To contextualize Morisco wine production and consumption, I first examine the religious, legal and poetic contexts within Muslim-Mudejar history and how wine informed their identity. Using Bourdieu's theory of distinction and the fact that practices as banal as eating and drinking reflect social identity, I then turn to specific case studies. Records of vineyards and wine production, regulatory laws, and an artistic expression of Morisco wine consumption reflect economic, social and cultural realities for Moriscos and contribute …

Contributions Of Medieval Food Manuals To Spain’S Culinary Heritage, Carolyn Nadeau Dec 2011

Contributions Of Medieval Food Manuals To Spain’S Culinary Heritage, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

This article examines and compares the contributions of five Medieval Muslim and Christian recipe manuscripts to Spain‘s culinary history. Specifically, it explores notions of authorship and implied reader; the works ‘structures and shared culinary lexicon; strategies of imitation from vague, shared cultural tastes to exact ―borrowings‖ of recipes; and diverse narrative voices that express pride, satisfaction or even disappointment in describing different recipes. In addition, it examines unique features that contribute to Spain‘s culinary history. For example, it points to Jewish contributions as recorded in the Kitab al-tabij, unique bread recipes from the Fadalat found in no other medieval …

“What Else Happened In The Early Modern Kitchen? Reading Celestina’S Kitchen Through The Manual De Mugeres.”, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

Using both Fernando de Rojas’ Celestina and the anonymous Manual de mugeres en el qual se contienen muchas y diversas reçeutas muy buenas as primary sources, this article explores products women regularly prepared in their domestic space in addition to daily meals. Specifically, it examines items that deal directly with cosmetics for the skin, aromatics, products for the hair and mouth, and remedies for common ailments, including relief for women after childbirth. Responding to the research of Peter Russell and others on Celestina’s witchcraft and drawing from that of Alicia Martínez Crespo and Jesús Terrón González on cosmetics and concepts …

Ensaladas Calientes Y Carnero Verde: Imágenes De La Vianda En La Poesía Satírico-Burlesca De Francisco De Quevedo, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

Critiquing The Elite In The Barataria And 'Ricote' Food Episodes In Don Quijote Ii, Carolyn A. Nadeau Dec 2005

Critiquing The Elite In The Barataria And 'Ricote' Food Episodes In Don Quijote Ii, Carolyn A. Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

In Don Quixote II the multiple food episodes revolve around Sancho Panza who experiences and discusses the changing face of Spain's gastronomy. From simple peasant food to elaborate noble banquets, from a village wedding celebration to spontaneous roadside meals, and from detailed food preparations to post prandial conversations, the visceral Sancho experiences fully sensual pleasures of consumption. Characters in the novel, specifically Don Quixote and the doctor Pedro Recio who attends to Sancho while governor of Barataria, reveal cultural assumptions that consuming certain foods was a sign of social identity and maintained proper social equilibrium. In addition to confronting this …

From Amazon.com: Women in the Discourse of Early Modern Spain addresses the important methodological and conceptual issues surrounding the lives, works, and representations of women in the literature of Early Modern Spain. It offers a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of feminine identity and discourse both in the writings of both women and men. The essays move beyond the theme of women and literature in Early Modern Spain to reassess the economic, legal, political, and religious systems that articulate the parameters of women's access to power and self-determination in the past as well as in the present. Written by internationally …
