Lay Leaders In Catholic Higher Education: An Emerging Paradigm For The Twenty-First Century, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
Since the Second Vatican Council, lay women and men are assuming greater responsibility for guiding the mission of the Catholic Church in the modern world. This is particularly the case in institutions of Catholic higher education in the United States. The eighteen essays in this volume, based on presentations at a conference sponsored by Sacred Heart University and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, examine the many challenges facing lay leaders of Catholic institutions of higher learning. The volume begins with a report on a detailed study of the background of lay leaders; the essays that follow address such …

Constructing Authority In Lope De Vega's Egloga A Claudio: Self-Referentiality, Literary Judgment, And Ethics, Mark J. Mascia
Languages Faculty Publications
The poetry of Lope de Vega has most often been analyzed for its treatment of themes such as love, religious devotion, or autobiographical introspection. However, one other key aspect of his poetry, especially of his longer poetical works (such as his epistolas and eglogas), is the engagement of literature and ethical concerns often related to the art of writing poetry. The purpose of this study is to examine one such work, the Egloga a Claudio (1631), a lengthy poem which normally should be classified as an epistola, for its role as l literary vehicle for passing judgment on …

The Science And Religion Dialogue: Are Philosophical Foundations Necessary?, Michael Ventimiglia
The Science And Religion Dialogue: Are Philosophical Foundations Necessary?, Michael Ventimiglia
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
William James is well-known for arguing that different words which describe the same practical state of affairs are, in fact, equivalent in meaning. This theory of meaning is one important strain of American pragmatism, the movement which remains America’s primary philosophical contribution to intellectual history, and it invites us to consider a unique perspective on the contemporary dialogue between science and religion. Specifically, it raises the question of the necessity of philosophical foundations when there is practical agreement.
This paper argues that when practical agreement can be reached there are certain purposes for which philosophical foundations can be strategically ignored. …

The essay includes student creative writing samples.
The essay also discusses the depiction of nurses in popular culture. M*A*S*H*, Richard Hooker’s black comedy about the antics of doctors and nurses during the Korean War, gave us “Hot …
The Challenge Of Ethical Political Leadership, Brian Stiltner
The Challenge Of Ethical Political Leadership, Brian Stiltner
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Without a solid ethical foundation to state governance, the process of developing and implementing sound public policy is weakened. In addition to the crisis of public confidence, which may turn voters away from politics in disgust, political scandals undermine the quality of the policymaking process.
Connecticut needs watertight laws, vigorous oversight, independent voices, and an electoral process that does not pervert the information voters receive. The responsibility of citizens includes not only voting their consciences but pressing their representatives to put the electoral process and policymaking on a cleaner, more transparent foundation.
