On July 17, 1918, three hundred years of monarchy had ended in Russia with the brutal murder/execution of ex-Tsar Nicholas II and his entire family. In the midst of this, the Russian Revolution had been in full swing and Lenin rose to power. He also intended to keep this power and would do so by any means necessary. While keeping the Romanovs under house arrest, Lenin and the Bolsheviks pondered for months about what to do with the former royal family. The purpose of this thesis was to examine William Shakespeare’s role in American ideology. Utilizing the theoretical approaches of Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, adaptation and appropriation theories, and Critical Race Theory, I argue that Shakespeare is an integral part of American history and culture by how his works factor into American ideologies, particularly within ideologies focusing on race and colonialism. Specific plays and Shakespeare’s texts are analyzed, and I also follow the literary history of Americans in response to these plays. My first chapter looks at the Revolutionary and early republic eras, with particular focus on John Adams, his son …

A Greco-Latin Numerical List In A St. Gall Fragment, Brandon W. Hawk

This article provides a detailed examination of a manuscript page in St. Gall, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. Sang. 1395, with special attention given to an unnoticed Greco-Latin numerical list. The main content of the page derives from Bede’s De temporum ratione, and the fragment offers information about the transmission of this computational text. Furthermore, scribal notes accompanying the list show early medieval uses of Greek learning alongside Latin sources—a phenomenon reflected in a number of other manuscripts from the same time period. Such glosses are also related to the overall trends of Carolingian learning, as well as some possible Insular connections.

I am most concerned with the depiction of money in American film since the shift in the 1970s to a post-industrial, neoliberal economy. This shift to an informational capitalism places value on immaterial labor, such as a service, knowledge, and communication.3 Because of this change, industrial careers have vanished, along with the security that once came with them. Material labor has become essentially disposable in the US, due to outsourcing and automation. The American Dream has transformed dramatically; no longer can a typical family support itself with one income. This paper analyzes the messages found in American children’s visual media during the early years of the Cold War. Many producers in the film and television industry took to the screen to express concerns about possible Communist infiltration. These fears had grown over several decades of political and international instability, beginning in the early twentieth century and the first Red Scare. Thus, the explosion of the Cold War prompted producers to create media intended to socialize children around American ideals which would challenge the growing threat of Communism. This Honors thesis discusses an area of film score analysis that has been overlooked in scholarship. The author musically analyzes the work of Bernard Herrmann, revealing from his scores a hidden layer of connotative emotions and inner life of the female protagonists in the gothic melodrama films Jane Eyre (1943) and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947). The female voice in classical Hollywood was forced into submission due to the cultural ideology of Westernized gendered thought.
