5 Writing Trouble Spots For Esl Students Of Arabic, Lina Gomaa-Moulds

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Teaching writing to ESL learners has many challenges. Almost everybody knows that students’ first language affect their learning of the target language, in this case English. But, not everybody can really realize how far the first language can affect the learner’s English writing. ESL teachers must study about other first languages of their students to comprehend why the students are making certain mistakes and repeating them. During teaching English to Arabic speakers, there are five common mistakes they make while writing; no surprise, its due to effect of their first language. I will explore the five of them who I …

Interdisciplinary: Feminist Teaching, Research And Activism, Jamie P. Ross Nov 2010

Interdisciplinary: Feminist Teaching, Research And Activism, Jamie P. Ross

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Feminists' interdisciplinary work is a critical response to claims that disciplinary expertise provides real knowledge. Interdisciplinary teaching, research, and activism emerge in opposition to claims that only certain kinds of ideas are valuable. This paper will briefly delineate those concepts that have created an intellectual tradition that does not recognize the political and strategic elements entailed by all knowledge formation. Feminist activism is a reaction to the narrowly defined boundaries of what counts as a good idea. The distinction between passive and active knowledge acquisition allows us to view feminist teaching, research, and activism as active, ongoing engagements that emerge …

Sex And Laughter In Women's Music, 1970-77, Sarah Dougher Sep 2010

Sex And Laughter In Women's Music, 1970-77, Sarah Dougher

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The women's music movement of the early 1970's was created by and for women who came to political consciousness as a result of the women's liberation movement. The music culture that emerged was originally called "lesbian music", but later gained the less controversial descriptor "women's music". Outside of this music movement music produced during this period rarely made explicit links with emerging feminist consciousness. What differentiated "women's music" from other music made by women of the period was its lesbian focus (in both lyrics and performance contexts). Women's music was created for a lesbian audience to describe lesbian experiences and desires. …

On Family And Fences: Tracing Melungeon Roots In The Blue Ridge Mountains Of Virginia And Tennessee, Ron Horton May 2010

On Family And Fences: Tracing Melungeon Roots In The Blue Ridge Mountains Of Virginia And Tennessee, Ron Horton

Dissertations and Theses

The Melungeons are a group of indeterminable origin living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southeastern Tennessee and Southwestern Virginia. This thesis describes characteristics of these tri-racial isolates and gives theories as to their mysterious origins. Being darker skinned, the Melungeons were pushed into more mountainous regions by European colonists in the early 1700’s. While multiple hypotheses exist as to the origin of the Melungeon people, there is no single theory that is accepted by all scholars.

Dr. Brent Kennedy’s The Melungeons: The Resurrection of a Proud People, served as a catalyst for my Melungeon research. Kennedy is my …

Holism And Human History, Martin Zwick Apr 2010

Holism And Human History, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

This paper uses a systems-theoretic model to structure an account of human history. According to the model, a process, after its beginning and early development, often reaches a critical stage where it encounters some limitation. If the limitation is overcome, development does not face a comparable challenge until a second critical juncture is reached, where obstacles to further advance are more severe. At the first juncture, continued development requires some complexity-managing innovation; at the second, it needs some event of systemic integration in which the old organizing principle of the process is replaced by a new principle. Overcoming the first …

The Imprint Of Foucault’S The Order Of Things On The Works Of François Jacob, Harry Newcomb Apr 2010

The Imprint Of Foucault’S The Order Of Things On The Works Of François Jacob, Harry Newcomb

Anthós

My intent is to examine the interplay between Michel Foucault’s The Order of Things, originally published in France as Les Mots et les choses (Words and Things) in 1966, François Jacob’s history of heredity, The Logic of Life, published in France in 1970, and his autobiography, The Statue Within, 1987.

The Venus Victorieuse And Renoir’S Treatment Of The Female Nude, Tess Yinger Apr 2010

The Venus Victorieuse And Renoir’S Treatment Of The Female Nude, Tess Yinger

Anthós

Pierre-‐Auguste Renoir’s sculpture Venus Victorieuse is a mythic image of the ‘ideal’ woman that was influenced by The Judgment of Paris, the Aphrodite of Knidos, and the imagery of Eve in the Garden of Eden. This work is fundamental to realizing Renoir’s overall treatment of the female nude, which is fully epitomized by this formal sculpture.

Pierre-‐Auguste Renoir was an Impressionist artist who dedicated the last three decades of his life primarily to the depiction of the female nude. His representation of the nude, both in painting and sculpture, was monumental and idealized, and he often created images …

Anticipated Effects Of The U.S. Mexico City Policy On The Attainability Of The Millennium Development Goals And Future Development Efforts In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katherine Clare Alexander Apr 2010

Anticipated Effects Of The U.S. Mexico City Policy On The Attainability Of The Millennium Development Goals And Future Development Efforts In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katherine Clare Alexander

Anthós

In the low-income countries of sub-Saharan Africa, the performance of pyramidal reproductive health and family planning services with public outreach initiatives has not met the expectations or the needs of the communities they serve. Insufficient case management, limited management capacity and referral and communication failures are challenges faced on the delivery level, while on the policy level these health clinics face insufficient coordination among organizations and weak links between programs (Schneider, 2006). The Mexico City Policy, first introduced by President Reagan in 1984, only exacerbated these challenges for organizations that offer comprehensive contraception and family planning programs by denying any …

Weblogs As Autobiographical Discourse, Matthew Bellinger Apr 2010

Weblogs As Autobiographical Discourse, Matthew Bellinger

Anthós

In this essay, I wish to pursue an – admittedly all too brief – inspection of the weblog as a form of autobiographical discourse. In essence, I want to ask the question, "How does the blog as a medium shape a particular kind of self-representation?" To accomplish this, I will first provide a working definition of the autobiographical blog. Next, I will examine two elements that I believe are key to the blog as a form of discourse; that is, the blog’s temporal logic and its unique author-reader relationship. To conclude, I will argue that the aforementioned elements mark the …

FrançOis Jacob (1920-2013). Statue IntéRieure. English -- Criticism And Interpretation, Lindsay Tucker Apr 2010

FrançOis Jacob (1920-2013). Statue IntéRieure. English -- Criticism And Interpretation, Lindsay Tucker

Anthós

The Statue Within: An Autobiography is a seemingly candid reflection of the life and work of the French Nobel laureate, François Jacob. In 1965, he and his research partners (Jacques Monod & André Lwoff) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis. Nobel Prize recipients are required to provide an autobiographical statement, which can be found on their website (http://www.nobelprize.org). When comparing these two autobiographical works, one finds radical differences in structure and content. I examine here how Jacob approaches the following elements in each work: passage of …

"Heaven's Last, Worst Gift To White Men": The Quadroons Of Antebellum New Orleans, Erin Elizabeth Mccullugh Apr 2010

"Heaven's Last, Worst Gift To White Men": The Quadroons Of Antebellum New Orleans, Erin Elizabeth Mccullugh

Dissertations and Theses

Visitors to Antebellum New Orleans rarely failed to comment on the highly visible population of free persons of color, particularly the women. Light, but not white, the women who collectively became known as Quadroons enjoyed a degree of affluence and liberty largely unknown outside of Southeastern Louisiana. The Quadroons of New Orleans, however, suffered from neglect and misrepresentation in nineteenth and twentieth-century accounts.

Historians of slavery and southern black women, for example, have written at length on the sexual experiences of black women and white men. Most of the research, however, centers on the institutionalized rape, victimization, and exploitation of …

Toward A Theory Of Feminist Hospitality, Maurice Hamington Apr 2010

Toward A Theory Of Feminist Hospitality, Maurice Hamington

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Immigration, international conflicts, and world debt have contributed to rising unease over the power relations created by burgeoning globalization. Absent from much of the political rhetoric surrounding global issues is a role for the social value of hospitality. Political theorists and philosophers such as the late Jacques Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas have reinvigorated interest in hospitality. This article suggests that the work of feminist theorists such as Seyla Benhabib, Margaret Urban Walker, and Iris Marion Young on issues of identity, inclusiveness, reciprocity, forgiveness, and embodiment can contribute to an alternative theory of hospitality. Consistent with feminist care ethics, the theory …
