From 1869 to 1878 approximately fifty American military officers were invited to Egypt by Khedive Ismail for the purpose of modernizing the Egyptian army. During that time the American officers led by General Charles P. Stone designed a staff system for the Egyptian army and they established a series of technical schools not only for the staff officers but for the rank and file as well. In addition to the reorganization, the American officers led exploratory expeditions into central Africa, they refortified the Egyptian coastline and they built roads and lighthouses. In conjunction with their expeditions, the officers produced numerous …

The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda
The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis will examine the significance of the defense system that was a result of the Libyan wars against the Romans, Byzantines, and the Vandals. For economic and strategic reasons these nations were involved in long and bitter wars which lasted over six centuries. The policy of the long distance military expeditions, which was the main instrument of the Romans in subduing the natives in the early Empire, had failed to achieve its goals. Thus, the alternative was to erect a network of roads and forts in strategic spots such as water points, commanding hills, along the caravan routes and …

Empathetic Reactions Derived Through Abstract Sculptured Forms, Bruce Frederick Literal
Empathetic Reactions Derived Through Abstract Sculptured Forms, Bruce Frederick Literal
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis project consists of sixteen abstract sculptures. The material most often used is polyester resin. The work explores the emotive potential of the relationship between the organic forms and geometric spaces. The forms are derived from observing the environment, other current artists' works, and the works of art history.
The sculptures generally divide into three groups. The first is composed of geometric and organic forms that are altered slightly so that aspects of each form reside in its opposite. The second group maintains a purity of organic and geometric elements. Here a balance is kept by weighing the visual …
Aspekte Des Charakterbegriffs Im Werk Von Bertolt Brecht, Brigitte Dewolfe
Aspekte Des Charakterbegriffs Im Werk Von Bertolt Brecht, Brigitte Dewolfe
Dissertations and Theses
Brecht's concept of character and its influence on the content and style of his works
Brecht's concept of character, based on the Marxist-socialist premise of the perfectibility of man, is one of the most important aspects of his work. He believes that man's character is comparable to an atom, constantly falling apart and re-assembling itself. He states that man should be defined by his contradictory actions.
With this view of man, several assumptions of the traditional theater no longer hold. There is no stalwart hero to pit the strength of his character against fate, there is no moral code by …

Passage, Randal Sumner
Passage, Randal Sumner
Dissertations and Theses
The work in my terminal project exhibition reflects ideas that have been constant in my previous to my two-year M.F.A. studio experience. My last two years have been spent developing these ideas, as well as discarding and exploring others.
I have grouped my work by medium rather than by specific pieces. I find it impossible to consider a single work out of context of the larger series. Evan an unsuccessful work has its place illuminating the direction of the entire production. I have tried to use drawing, lithography, and painting with a concern for thier intrinsic properties. All the work …

Indications Of Feminist Influence On Contemporary Social Work Practice, Clara Elizabeth Miller
Indications Of Feminist Influence On Contemporary Social Work Practice, Clara Elizabeth Miller
Dissertations and Theses
It is criticism of traditional theory and methods, and the advocacy of new approaches that feminists have tried to present to social workers and to other professionals in mental health and other social services. The feminist goal has been to convince social workers and others to modify their beliefs and practice in order to be more helpful (as the feminists believe) to women. In this study of the beliefs and practice of social workers in Oregon, I attempt to find out to what extent, ten years after the "rebirth of feminism," they have adopted feminist beliefs and recommendations for practice.

Upton Sinclair And The 1934 California Gubernatorial Election, Patricia Lucy Hill
Upton Sinclair And The 1934 California Gubernatorial Election, Patricia Lucy Hill
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis attempts to ascertain whether Upton Sinclair's Democratic nomination for governor of California in 1934 caused the resurgence of the Democratic Party in California, or whether his nomination was a product of that party's resurgence between 1928 and 1942. Given Sinclair's decision on the unsuitability of the Socialist Party, were his judgments that: (1) the Democratic Party was in resurgence and, (2) it was moving to the left, sound ones? To make these determinations the thesis investigates why Sinclair rushed to capture the Democratic nomination, exploring his methods and techniques and those used to defeat him. It also examines …

Native American Social Work Symposium : An Evaluation, Lou Stone
Native American Social Work Symposium : An Evaluation, Lou Stone
Dissertations and Theses
The inconsistencies of the state and federal policy toward Native populations and additionally those inconsistencies within the two governments themselves, require the maintenance of Indian and Alaskan Native organizations with sophisticated mechanisms developed to advocate “reforms” in Indian services to meet unique Indian needs.
Indian and Alaskan Native social workers invariably find themselves at the confluence of client service provision and surviving the extension of policies available to them from resource allocators for the purpose of service provision. In order to approach this dilemma, the Native American Social Work Symposium, held in May of 1977, convened on the basis of …

Politics Of Land Use : The Lengthy Saga Of Senate Bill 100, Kathleen Joan Zachary

Theoretical literature on the politics of land use is so limited that original research into the problem was required. The bill designated state land use planning organizational structure.
The Land Use Policy Committee minutes and Legislative minutes were merged with information attained through personal interviews from a variety of participants in the drafting of the Senate Bill 100. Theoretical literature was equally available in Public Administration, Law and Land Use Planning. The Constitutions …

Stephen Crane's Ironic Vision, Michael J. O'Bryant
Stephen Crane's Ironic Vision, Michael J. O'Bryant
Dissertations and Theses
Stephen crane's major irony in his art is produced by contrasting his characters' illusions with reality. In Maggie that reality is an environmental indifference that is very much like the deterministic environment of the Naturalistic Novelists. Maggie's perceptions and expectations contrast with this reality, seeming very ironic. In The Red Badge of Courage, "The Open Boat," and "The Blue Hotel,” each character's illusion is contrasted with a reality that is absolutely indifferent. It is in these works (as well as in his letters and poetry) that Crane affirms man's need to embrace those illusions which enable him to face reality. …
