The Dynamic Of Unity Writing, Virginia Gilroy Jan 2019

The Dynamic Of Unity Writing, Virginia Gilroy

Department of Writing and Communication Theses

The Dynamic Unity of Writing (DUW) offers an object oriented theory of writing, based on the idea of a dynamic unit, which is the simultaneous manifestation of distinct thought processes acting as one. This thesis demonstrates how writing, while grounded in consciousness, fulfills the four characteristics of a dynamic unit: that in its unity of action, writing is a basic level structure; that writing is more than the sum of its parts; that it is observable only in a context of operation; and, that writing exhibits a pattern of correlation across elements. This theory blends the four elements of the …

Disrupting” The Broadcast: Female Showrunners As 21st Century “Fangirl” Feminist Rhetors, Veronica Diaz Jan 2019

Disrupting” The Broadcast: Female Showrunners As 21st Century “Fangirl” Feminist Rhetors, Veronica Diaz

Department of Writing and Communication Theses

Despite being considered a female-driven discipline, previous scholarship and personal testimonies indicate that composition remains solidly a “boys’ club.” Popular media is male-dominated as well, resulting in on-screen representations of women that, written from the male perspective, tend toward one-dimensionality. Recently, more women are permeating Hollywood writers’ rooms and producing multi-layered stories that offset the aforementioned portrayals.

This thesis examines how showrunners Marti Noxon, Jenji Kohan, and Shonda Rhimes have redefined female representation on-screen—and subsequently, perceptions of women in real life—by crafting nuanced, female-driven narratives. Elements analyzed include: themes present in Noxon’s Sharp Objects (2018) and Dietland (2018), Kohan’s Weeds …

Using Twitter As A Pedagogical Resource To Teach First-Year Composition, Carol Reynolds-Srot Jan 2018

Using Twitter As A Pedagogical Resource To Teach First-Year Composition, Carol Reynolds-Srot

Department of Writing and Communication Theses

This study examines the incorporation of Twitter in a first-year composition classroom, and addresses the following question: “How can using Twitter as a pedagogical resource to teach writing benefit both students and professors?” The study employs mixed-methods, including surveys, textual analysis of student tweets, and an interview with the professor to assess the application and outcomes of using Twitter. The research finds that although students use social media for a significant amount of time daily, bringing it into the classroom does not automatically lead to better engagement or improved writing. However, students in this study did demonstrate a differentiated used …

Navigating Expectations: A Comparative Analysis Of Writing Standards, Denise Pichardo Jan 2012

Navigating Expectations: A Comparative Analysis Of Writing Standards, Denise Pichardo

Department of Writing and Communication Theses

Writing, for some, is seen as a predominantly subjective subject. Many standards of how writing is evaluated exist among institutions and professionals, and along with this, there are complications with fulfilling these standards because of the variety of opinions in what makes someone ready for college-level work. Because of this, it is hard for high schools, universities, and other organizations to agree on and determine one set of standards. This chapter will discuss the issue of college readiness and will introduce and discuss the need for an understanding of how college-level writing is defined among four different organizations. Then I …

This study reviews the minimal discussion of students‟ attitudes towards writing in past and current writing center research and builds upon the conversation by following three students‟ journeys in the writing center and discussing whether their experiences with the tutors has improved their attitudes about writing.
