Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists predominantly of slides and photographs taken on Herman P. Dean’s travels and limited papers consisting of travel brochures, firearm and book catalogs, personal notes and ephemera, and correspondence related to Dean’s book purchasing habits.

The photographs are the bulk of the collection and consist of 200-300 slides that were unable to examined extensively and more than 200 developed photographs from various trips and events. Several trips have been identified: one to the Hudson Bay area ("Rupert's Land Montreal" Trip Set, part 1 and part 2), one for the Rockies which is extensively captioned (Captioned Trip Shot Photos …

James G. Matthews was a jack-of-all-trades. He worked as a coal miner for James C. Coal Company, worked for United Fuel Gas Company, the Nickel Plant, and as a mail courier. He also performed as part of a singing quartet. Mr. Matthews was born on May 30, 1902. He grew up on a farm near East Lynn, WV. After the death of his mother, Mr. Matthews attended elementary school on a part-time basis in order to work on the family farm.
