That fusion of poetry and music which we call song has provoked controversy, evoked ecstasy, and has tempted nearly every composer sometime during his musical career. What is it that drives a man to take immortal words and endeavor to transcend them in music? Indeed few composers have ever been truly successful, but even the idea of "perfect song" stimulates argument. The well-worn controversy of the importance of music above the words, and vice versa, has never been resolved, nor is it likely to be. The greatest problem lies in the fact that a poem existed as an independent work …

The is an account of the Book of Commandments, which was the first monograph published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in 1833. The paper used to print to the book was purchased in Wheeling, (West) Virginia. The book was destroyed in press by a mob and was never completed. However, a limited number of the printed signatures were salvaged and bound. The few surviving, incomplete copies are worth thousands of dollars. The volume is Mormonism's rarest book.

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of an orderly book kept by Sgt. Erastus Harris of Medway, Mass. Harris recorded orders while at Castle Island (Boston) and Fort Cumberland (Nova Scotia) under the command of Joseph Frye and Brig. Gen. Timothy Ruggles as a member of Frye's regiment of Mass. Provincials during the French and Indian War (1759-60), and while stationed with the 1st Massachusetts Regiment of Guards under the command of Col. Jonathan Reed from Apr.-June 1778.

This collection contains a letter written by Aaron Gatchel on April 18, 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia to his brother David in Urichsville, Ohio. The letter describes an engagement at Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia; gives losses of the 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company B; and comments on Lincoln's assassination. A transcript of the letter is included in the collection.

Also present in the collection is a letter of thanks for Shade’s presentation to the WV Federation of Women’s Clubs, Capital District [Charleston, WV] on the work of the Morris Memorial Hospital for Crippled Children, a project of the Capital District Clubs
