Art Imitates Life: Violence And The Music Of Metal And Rap, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews Sep 2006

Art Imitates Life: Violence And The Music Of Metal And Rap, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

The purpose of this presentation is to explore the similar evolution's of Black Metal and Gangsta Rap musical genres. The authors argue the following similarities exist: 1) different cultures and statements being made, but violence is a common thread (outcomes of violence and societal responses), 2) the music and lyrics in both reflect their cultures, histories, and lives, and, 3) there is a strong musical and lyrical expression of violence related to the behavioral expression of violence among the artists and the fans in both genres. Finally, the authors question whether art imitates life or life imitates art.

A Survey On Ontology Mapping, Namyoun Choi, Il-Yeol Song, Hyoil Han

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Ontology is increasingly seen as a key factor for enabling interoperability across heterogeneous systems and semantic web applications. Ontology mapping is required for combining distributed and heterogeneous ontologies. Developing such ontology mapping has been a core issue of recent ontology research. This paper presents ontology mapping categories, describes the characteristics of each category, compares these characteristics, and surveys tools, systems, and related work based on each category of ontology mapping. We believe this paper provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of ontology mapping and points to various research topics about the specific roles of ontology mapping.

Review Of Choral Music Of Thea Musgrave, Bridge Records, 2004, Vicki Stroeher Mar 2006

Review Of Choral Music Of Thea Musgrave, Bridge Records, 2004, Vicki Stroeher

Music Faculty Research

Extraordinary music demands extraordinary performance. Unfortunately, in this recording of Thea Musgrave's recent choral works (most composed between 1986 and 1994 ), the music presented here fails to receive fully satisfying realization. Each work, however different, receives the same approach, as though director and chorus understand neither the texts nor their settings. While Musgrave’s craft proves remarkably consistent, the diverse compositional techniques she exploits show an equally remarkable variety. Unfortunately, these performances by Harold Rosenbaum and the New York Virtuoso Singers capture their unity, but not their variety. It is precisely this variety that must drive interpretation.

Ursula: Afro Cultural Identity and Criticism to Women’s oppression in Brazil at the middle of the 19th Century

Ursula (1859), by Maria Firmina dos Reis (Brazil, 1825-1917) is one of the Brazilian’s first novels. It is an abolitionist romance written from the author’s perspective as female of Afro descent. In the plot, the appeal of the love story is diminished by the account of actions and stories of the slaves. That account introduces a variety of issues such as race representation and Afro culture in Brazil, slavery, and gender oppression. This one is imposed on the female characters independently of …

From Orthodoxy To Heresy: A Theological Analysis Of Sonnets Xiv And Xviii, Timothy J. Burbery Jan 2006

From Orthodoxy To Heresy: A Theological Analysis Of Sonnets Xiv And Xviii, Timothy J. Burbery

English Faculty Research

The commentary on Milton's eighteenth sonnet ("On the Late Massacre' in Piedmont") is rich and extensive. Kester Svendsen's often cited 1945 essay, the first close reading of the poem; ushered in many other interpretations of its biblical imagery, as well as speech-act analyses, reader- response discussions, and at least one Foucaldian study. Yet even though a religious conflict inspired the sonnet, and although numerous interpreters have paid close attention to the work's biblical texture, no sustained theological account of the poem has been offered. The present essay seeks to fill that gap by examining the work in light of two …

Shirking No Danger: The Civil War Diary Of Robert C. Thompson, Robert C. Thompson, Jack L. Dickinson, Marshall University Special Collections

Manuscripts

The Civil War diary of this Tennessee farm boy who was a soldier in the 41st Tennessee Infantry, CSA, is interesting for several reasons. It starts with his experiences in a POW camp a few months after his capture at Ft. Donelson, Tenn., in Feb. 1862. It relates the joy of being exchanged and returning to his unit. The remainder of the diary accounts his unit’s marching and skirmishing across Mississippi. He was a very detail-oriented person, and recorded the dates he mailed letters to his wife and the dates he received answers. As a lieutenant of his company, …

The Problem Of Comparing Different Cultural Or Theoretical Frameworks: Davidson, Rorty, And The Nature Of Truth, Jeremy Barris Jan 2006

The Problem Of Comparing Different Cultural Or Theoretical Frameworks: Davidson, Rorty, And The Nature Of Truth, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

In comparing very different cultural, theoretical, or methodological standpoints, the nature of truth itself becomes a problem. If the standpoints have different conceptions of truth, a comparative approach that respects both involves the contradiction of conflicting legitimate claims to truth. But if we reject this contradiction, we eliminate the possibility that standpoints can have legitimately different conceptions of truth. And with that we reject the sense of a genuine comparison in this respect, rather than a reading of one framework in the light of the other. Davidson and Rorty have mounted especially powerful arguments against the very sense of this …
