Review Of The Hilliard Ensemble, Guillaume De Machaut: Motets. Ecm Records, 2004, Vicki Stroeher
Review Of The Hilliard Ensemble, Guillaume De Machaut: Motets. Ecm Records, 2004, Vicki Stroeher
Music Faculty Research
The motets of Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377), though described by one scholar as "conservative and backward-looking" because of their heavy use of French texts, nonetheless provide a rich melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic palette for the extraordinary voices of the Hilliard Ensemble. The ensemble's recording of eighteen of the twenty-three known works in this genre (a twenty-fourth exists, but its attribution is spurious), is exemplary and should delight both the medieval scholar and the casual listener.

Teaching Texts Materially: The Ends Of Nella Larsen’S Passing, John K. Young
Teaching Texts Materially: The Ends Of Nella Larsen’S Passing, John K. Young
English Faculty Research
The author suggests that attending to the publishing history of Larsen’s novel and the resulting indeterminacy of its ending(s) offers a concrete example of a materially oriented pedagogy that can illuminate the racial politics behind textual production and its relation to particular historical and cultural moments. He suggests that such a pedagogy offers both another way of understanding the textual contingency emphasized in contemporary theory and a way of further opening up questions of textuality and meaning for students.

Review Of Trio Mediaeval, Soir, Dit-Elle, Ecm Records 2004 And Words Of The Angel, Ecm Records 2001, Vicki Stroeher
Review Of Trio Mediaeval, Soir, Dit-Elle, Ecm Records 2004 And Words Of The Angel, Ecm Records 2001, Vicki Stroeher
Music Faculty Research
This pair of discs by Trio Mediaeval offers an imaginative soundscape of music both ancient and new. Trio Mediaeval's approach to the ancient is laudable and lovely, but the contemporary compositions written specifically for this all female group seem to give them their truest voice. The older recording, Words of the Angel (2001), intersperses movements of the Tournai mass--one of the earliest manuscript compilations of polyphonic settings of the texts of the Ordinary—among monophonic laudae and English Marian motets and sequences. The various styles provide textural and harmonic relief, a real concern in a completely unaccompanied recording. The recording takes …
Virginia Woolf's Publishing Archive, John K. Young
Virginia Woolf's Publishing Archive, John K. Young
English Faculty Research
Woolf the publisher remains that “drab figure in the gray overalls” for many Woolf scholars, despite an abundance of archival material documenting Woolf’s role as publisher. The most familiar Woolf archives are of course the manuscripts and drafts, many now in print, that have inescapably changed the way we read Woolf’s published texts.

Review Of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Christus, Kirchenwerke Iii, Kammerchor 2004 Stuttgart, Bamberger Symphoniker, Frieder Bernius, Conductor. Carus-Verlag, 1987., Vicki Stroeher
Music Faculty Research
Carus-Verkag, Frieder Bernius, and the Stuttgarter Kammerchor have produced a number of impressive recordings to serve as companions to their impeccable printed editions of valuable, but seldom performed, choral works. Mendelssohn's music has been championed in at least six of these recordings, and showcases an undeniably rich output that until now has received scant attention. The present disc aims to reverse that fortune. Christus features three early works from 1822 to 1825, when the composer was just thirteen to sixteen years old, along with late works from 1843 and 1847. Even the earliest of these works provides evidence of Mendelssohn's …

“’National Apostasy,’ Tracts For The Times, And Plain Sermons: John Keble's Tractarian Prose.”, Robert Ellison
“’National Apostasy,’ Tracts For The Times, And Plain Sermons: John Keble's Tractarian Prose.”, Robert Ellison
English Faculty Research
John Keble is perhaps best known for The Christian Year and his work as Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1831 to 1841. In this essay, I argue that his prose is worthy of study as well. I focus on "National Apostasy," the sermon that John Henry Newman saw as the inauguration of the Oxford Movement; the 8 pieces he contributed to the Tracts for the Times; and his many contributions to the Plain Sermons, by Contributors to the "Tracts for the Times."

The Social Effects Of Psychism: Spiritual Experience And The Construction Of Privatized Religion, Marty Laubach
The Social Effects Of Psychism: Spiritual Experience And The Construction Of Privatized Religion, Marty Laubach
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research
What is the relationship between spiritual experiences and privatized religion? This study defines spiritual experiences in terms of “psychism,” or psychic intrusions in the stream of consciousness that are not perceived by the actor as originating within the “self.” Intrusions interpreted as psychism are regarded by the actor as having the same facticity as empirical experience and are regarded as “proof” of an esoteric belief system. Psychism originated beliefs are therefore resistant to refutation or change, and support spiritual autonomy. Psychism theory is tested using 1988 GSS data on religious beliefs, where psychism is measured using GSS questions on “paranormal” …
