Towards An Islamic Theology Of Nonviolence: A Critical Appraisal Of Maulana Wahiduddin Khan's View Of Jihad (Part Ii), Irfan A. Omar

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

In the second and last part of his article (see September issue, 671·80) Dr Omar explains the true meaning of Jihad in the ancient Islamic sources, which does not stand for violent warfare but for the struggle that every Muslim , indeed every person, should go through to remain obedient to God's Word and to fulfil [sic] the will of God on earth. With this we wish to commemorate the UNO declared day dedicated to non-violence, the day known in India as Gandhi Jayanti (Oct. 2).

The Effect Of Explicit Instruction And Input Flood On Students' Use Ofspanish Discourse Markers On A Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview, Todd A. Hernandez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This study investigates the effect of explicit instruction and input flood on students' use of Spanish discourse markers on a simulated oral proficiency interview. Students in the experimental group (n = 10) were provided with explicit instruction on the function and use of discourse markers to narrate an event in the past time frame. This group also received a flood of input that contained an increased incidence of discourse markers. Students were then presented with opportunities for communicative practice and corrective feedback. In contrast, students in the control group (n = 9) did not receive explicit instruction on the use …

(Wp 2009-01) Trust In Others: Does Religion Matter?, Joseph P. Daniels, Marc Von Der Ruhr

Economics Working Papers

Though the recent literature offers intuitively appealing bases for, and evidence of a linkage among religious beliefs, religious participation and economic outcomes, evidence on a relationship between religion and trust is mixed. By allowing for an attendance effect, disaggregating Protestant denominations, and using a more extensive data set, probit models of the General Social Survey (GSS), 1975 through 2000, show that Black Protestants, Pentecostals, fundamentalist Protestants, and Catholics, trust others less than individuals who do not claim a preference for a particular denomination. For conservative denominations the effect of religion is though affiliation not attendance. In contrast, liberal Protestants trust …

The Gods Of My Father Terah’: Abraham The Iconoclast And The Polemics With The Divine Body Traditions In The Apocalypse Of Abraham, Andrei Orlov Sep 2008

The Gods Of My Father Terah’: Abraham The Iconoclast And The Polemics With The Divine Body Traditions In The Apocalypse Of Abraham, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The first eight chapters of the Apocalypse of Abraham recount the early years of the young hero of the faith who is depicted as a fighter against the idolatrous practices of his father Terah. The conceptual developments found in this section of the work, especially in the depictions of the idolatrous statues, seem to play an important role in the work's overall retraction of the anthropomorphic understanding of the deity. In the depictions of the idol Bar-Eshath (`the Son of Fire') and some other human-like figures, whose features are vividly reminiscent of the familiar attributes of the anthropomorphic portrayals of …

Integrative Motivation As A Predictor Of Achievement In The Foreign Language Classroom, Todd A. Hernandez Aug 2008

Integrative Motivation As A Predictor Of Achievement In The Foreign Language Classroom, Todd A. Hernandez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This study examines the relationship among five independent variables—integrative motivation, instrumental motivation, the need to fulfill a foreign language requirement, grade point average (GPA), and previous years studying Spanish—as predictors of five dependent variables: scores on a simulated oral proficiency interview (SOPI), final exam grades, final grades, the desire to enroll in Spanish courses after completing the language requirement, and intention to major in Spanish. Data from a questionnaire and a SOPI administered to 130 students enrolled in fourth-semester Spanish identified integrative motivation as a significant predictor of SOPI scores and final exam grades. Furthermore, integrative motivation was a significant …

Sexual Mores, Ethical Theories, And The Overpopulation Myth, Howard P. Kainz May 2008

Sexual Mores, Ethical Theories, And The Overpopulation Myth, Howard P. Kainz

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Some of the causes of the 'sexual revolution' during the past few decades are widely known: The development of relatively safe and reliable contraceptives, especially the birth-control pill; the 'morning after' pill; antibiotics to relieve or cure sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis; the increased social acceptance of pre-marital sex, homosexuality, and other behaviors that formerly were considered deviant; and the legalization of abortion as the ultimate 'contraceptive'. But little attention has been paid to two rather cerebral factors relevant to these developments – namely, ethical theories, and theories of overpopulation. In this paper I will argue …

Race And Redemption: Racial And Ethnic Evolution In Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy, Peter Staudenmaier

History Faculty Research and Publications

With its origins in modern Theosophy, Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy is built around a racial view of human nature arranged in a hierarchical framework. This article examines the details of the Anthroposophical theory of cosmic and individual redemption and draws out the characteristic assumptions about racial and ethnic difference that underlie it. Particular attention is given to textual sources unavailable in English, which reveal the specific features of Steiner’s account of “race evolution” and “soul evolution.” Placing Steiner’s worldview in its historical and ideological context, the article highlights the contours of racial thinking within a prominent alternative spiritual movement and delineates …

Interpreting Vatican Ii: “A New Pentecost”, Thomas Hughson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Pope John XXIII's prayerful phrase “a new Pentecost” linked Vatican II with the Holy Spirit and has interpretative potential. It focuses the pneumatological dimensions of the epochal event and documents. The article considers Pentecost in the constitution of the church, emphasizes the pneumatological difference, underlines the finality of Vatican II toward renewal in the church's (now dialogical) mission, and concludes to a completeness in the council.
