Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World, Monica O. Healy May 1934

Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World, Monica O. Healy

Bachelors’ Theses

The Orient offers many quaint and mystifying spectacles of which few people are fully aware. To a reader and would - be student of history the Ancient World appears to be a myth.

Modern man in selecting subjects that will be marveled at through the ages rarely realizes that the ancients, considered to be less intelligent and uncultured than him self, erected temples far superior to even the most magnificent cathedral, created art that has to this time been unequaled and buried their dead in even greater splendoe than our millionaires of today could afford.

The selection of the Seven …

The Prototypes Of Some Characters In Certain Novels Of George Meredith, Harry Josep Hayes May 1934

The Prototypes Of Some Characters In Certain Novels Of George Meredith, Harry Josep Hayes

Bachelors’ Theses

It has been the aim of the author in the course of this treatise on some of the characters in the novels of George Meredith to bring out more clearly the relationship between some of those characters and the friends and contemporaries of the author's. The method used was an analysis of the novels written by the author and a study of the comments and criticism which fellow writers and modern commentaries have added. Besides this, it was necessary to trace the history of the author, that is; his life, and his friendships. In the manner the task has fallen …

The American Short Story From 1865 To 1900, Wendel W. Crosby May 1934

The American Short Story From 1865 To 1900, Wendel W. Crosby

Bachelors’ Theses

Toe purpose of this thesis is to trace the development of the .American short story from about 1865 to about 1900. I propose to do this by dividing the material studied into four periods and then to weigh, examine, and compare the chief exponents of the American short story during each period. The divisions are: The Period Following the Civil War, of which I shall consider the stories of Bret Hart, Aldrich, Twain and James; The Era of Localized Romance, of which the stories of Cable and Jewett will be considered; The Reign of Dialect, dominated by Murfree. Harris and …

The Inca Of Peru: The Spanish Influence, Irving John Fischer May 1934

The Inca Of Peru: The Spanish Influence, Irving John Fischer

Bachelors’ Theses

In the course of the centuries there have been many atrocities that stand for a mile posts along the road of history. One of these surely is the robbery by which great wealth of gold was taken by the buccaneers of Spain from the Indian civilizations of Mexico and Peru. How these briggands sacked the homes, plundered the villages is common knowledge even to the child of the primary school. The ransom of Atahuallpa, a room full of gold, is as well known to him as are his children stories. But what even the adult of today fails to see …

The Contributions Of David Belasco To The Theatre, Betti Murphy Bergs May 1934

The Contributions Of David Belasco To The Theatre, Betti Murphy Bergs

Bachelors’ Theses

A thesis treating of David Belasco must, of necessity, be built around his realism in his productions. However, so many authors have spoken of him from only that angle, that it would be futile and absurd to devote more time and writing to it. Therefore this thesis shall touch upon his realism only insofar as it is concerned with the subject on hand.

The purpose of this thesis shall be to present a survey of David Belasco and his productions in New York. Obviously a background for his theatrical pursuits must be given.

The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine Apr 1934

The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is intended as a study of the first French Republic during the years of 1792 and 1795.

The writer might call it the Revolution itself, so completely were the years of violence under the Convention the outcome of the attempt to preserve the advantages the Constituent Assembly had gained. To understand the conditions which were outgrown and the origin and growth of the revolutionary spirit, seems, therefore, quite as necessary as to trace the history of the destruction of abuse and the struggle for liberties and rights.

While novelties of historical matters are always to be suspected, the …

A Comparison Of The Dramatic Technique Of "Antony And Cleopatra" With That Of "Macbeth," "Hamlet," And "King Lear.", Catherine Cunningham Apr 1934

A Comparison Of The Dramatic Technique Of "Antony And Cleopatra" With That Of "Macbeth," "Hamlet," And "King Lear.", Catherine Cunningham

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to discover the formula for a typical Shakespearean tragedy by an analysis of four of the later tragedies, "Hamlet," "Macbeth," "King Lear," and "Antony and Cleopatra." Knowing that Shakespeare employed various dramatic devices to secure his effects, I propose to find out in what way his dramatic technique in the play "Antony and Cleopatra" differs from that of the three preceding plays.

By examining the technical divisions of each Shakespearean tragedy and the use of the various dramatic elements which Shakespeare employed, I believe the outstanding differences in the dramatic technique will be …

The Ethics Of Peter Abelard With Introduction And Translation, William Farrell Hurley Apr 1934

The Ethics Of Peter Abelard With Introduction And Translation, William Farrell Hurley

Bachelors’ Theses

It appears after exhaustive search that no complete English translation of Abelard's Ethics is available. Accordingly, not all students of philosophy have been able to use the primary source to study the system of ethics introduced by Abelard. The secondary sources or commentaries in English in most instances do not offer sufficient material for a complete understanding and appreciation of the innovation made by Abelard in the field of ethics. To furnish a translation of his Ethics is therefore the fundamental purpose of this thesis.

Famous American Women Of The Twentieth Century, Ruth Carol Grodin Apr 1934

Famous American Women Of The Twentieth Century, Ruth Carol Grodin

Bachelors’ Theses

Women, after centuries of subjection are at last beginning to make a place for themselves under the sun. Where once they were considered the property of men, today they find themselves on an equal plane with man, but not until after a fierce struggle.

Man, being selfish and tenacious by character, was not ready to give up his rights in women. Be had fought honestly, courageously, and sometimes fraudulently and foolishly tor his women and what he considered their duties, but for all his struggling, he still required women to be subservient to himself. It was not until women actually …

Comparison Between Shakespeare's Richard Iii And The Historical Richard Iii, M. Annella Apr 1934

Comparison Between Shakespeare's Richard Iii And The Historical Richard Iii, M. Annella

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of the writer in working out this thesis is to discover in what respects Shakespeare has been untrue to historical facts and characters. In a work of this kind, it will be possible to point out only the chief discrepancies on the part of the dramatist, by a specific comparison of the play and its characters with the period of history with which the play deals and the life of the main characters concerned. A great portion of the work will be devoted to the careful analysis of the character of Richard III, the vortex about which the …

The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Waterway, William Bruce Apr 1934

The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Waterway, William Bruce

Bachelors’ Theses

In 1535 Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River as far as Montreal. At this point the furtherance or his journey was hindered by rapids. About a hundred years after the appearance of Cartier, missionaries, traders and trappers began to see the possibilities of approaching the center of the continent by an entire water route. In 1679 LaSalle built the "Griffin" on Lake Erie and sailed as far as the Detroit River. Progress on the Great Lakes was hindered by the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution in the Eighteenth Century.

Chinese Civilization: A Brief Sketch Of Its Origin And Development, Marino P. Fiorani Apr 1934

Chinese Civilization: A Brief Sketch Of Its Origin And Development, Marino P. Fiorani

Bachelors’ Theses

It has been my earnest endeavor, in writing this thesis to ·trace in the many phases· the influences of Chinese civilization on Europe. I have attempted to discuss the origin and development of Chinese civilization. It is very difficult in making such a study, to be brief and yet clear. For this reason I have made a special effort to compile all the material and expound it in a unique and interesting manner, remaining brief but yet explicit. It has been my aim to compile this brief study on the civilization of the Chinese people in such a way that …
