Using Rights To Counter “Gender-Specific” Wrongs, Theresa Tobin Nov 2009

Using Rights To Counter “Gender-Specific” Wrongs, Theresa Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

One popular strategy of opposition to practices of female genital cutting (FCG) is rooted in the global feminist movement. Arguing that women’s rights are human rights, global feminists contend that practices of FGC are a culturally specific manifestation of gender-based oppression that violates a number of rights. Many African feminists resist a women’s rights approach. They argue that by focusing on gender as the primary axis of oppression affecting the African communities where FGC occurs, a women’s rights approach has misrepresented African women as passive victims who need to be rescued from African men and has obscured the role of …

Analogy As Higher-Order Metaphor In Aquinas, Robert Masson Oct 2009

Analogy As Higher-Order Metaphor In Aquinas, Robert Masson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

At a Thomas Instituut conference in 2000, Otto-Hermann Pesch suggested somewhat enigmatically that the sharp distinction in scholastic Thomism between analogy and metaphor can no longer be maintained since on closer examination analogous statements are in effect instances of a kind of 'higher-order metaphor'. I Pesch intended this qualification primarily to draw attention to the agnostic or negative aspect of analogous speech.2 It is evident from Herwi Rikhof's portrait of 'Thomas at Utrecht' ,3 that this emphasis on the negative dimension did not introduce anything controversial or novel at the Instituut.

Preparing Tomorrow’S World Language Teacher Today: The Case For Seamless Induction, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez, Patricia Davis-Wiley

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena.

Review [Of Peter Rawlings' Henry James And The Abuse Of The Past], Sarah Wadsworth Oct 2009

Review [Of Peter Rawlings' Henry James And The Abuse Of The Past], Sarah Wadsworth

English Faculty Research and Publications

[...] the "abuse of the past" becomes in James's hands "an art of fiction and the framework of an autobiography" (67-68). According to Rawlings, "Henry James's late fiction specializes in constructing, within the volatile framework of philosophies of time then current, decadent mutations of America's vanishing dreamers, characters arrested . . . by the forlorn realization that 'we shall never be again as we were!'" (141-42).

Enlightenment And Ecumenism, Ulrich Lehner Oct 2009

Enlightenment And Ecumenism, Ulrich Lehner

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The contribution of monasticism to Christian theology's framework in almost all periods is undisputed. However, the eighteenth century as a period of monastic theology is still—unjustly—overlooked. That was precisely the time when monks, mostly Benedictines, challenged the traditional ways of theologizing and, along with a number of dedicated individuals, initiated what came to be called the Catholic Enlightenment.1 This movement worked not only for a renewal of ecclesiastical practice and thought, but also for a peaceful dialogue between the Christian churches and even toward an ecumenical theology. One of the most intriguing figures of this enlightened theology is the Swabian …

The Sky Is Wide Enough: A Historico-Critical Appraisal Of Theological Activity And Method In Africa, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This essay presents and critiques the methods and claims of the principal theological schools and camps of African theology. While situating them in their historical context, it examines their respective claims as the best representative or expression of theological activity in Africa. The historico-critical appraisal of these African theological schools generates some useful lessons on the nature and method of theological reflection in Africa, particularly the necessity of taking experience and context seriously.

Jacob And Esau And The Iconoclasm Of Merit, John E. Curran Jr. Apr 2009

Jacob And Esau And The Iconoclasm Of Merit, John E. Curran Jr.

English Faculty Research and Publications

This article contends that the mid-Tudor interlude Jacob and Esau, long known to have a Protestant slant, promotes a Calvinistic doctrine of election consonant with Edwardian theology and that in doing so it also enacts a rare kind of iconoclastic drama. The play invalidates the very discriminations between the brothers it seems to encourage us to make. This building up only to break down the differences between the elect and the reprobate proves God’s judgments to be unresponsive to human merits and utterly inscrutable, even as it prompts the audience to beware of the limits of perception and the …

Medicine As Friendship With God: Anointing The Sick As A Theological Hermeneutic, M. Therese Lysaught Apr 2009

Medicine As Friendship With God: Anointing The Sick As A Theological Hermeneutic, M. Therese Lysaught

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

A theological bioethics needs, first, a theological politics. The thesis of this essay rests on the claim that the contours of a theological politics are found in the nature of sacramental practices. More specifically, a theological politics of medicine is found in the sacramental practice of anointing of the sick. Anointing provides a radically theological hermeneutic—a theologically robust vision for interpreting medicine that, if enacted, can powerfully make real God's work in the world. Such a vision is embodied in one particular twentieth-century exemplar—the organization called Partners In Health (PIH) and its cofounder, Paul Farmer. Farmer and PIH, I argue, …

Resisting Altruism: How Systematic Power And Privilege Become Personal In One-On-One Community Tutoring, Beth Godbee Apr 2009

Resisting Altruism: How Systematic Power And Privilege Become Personal In One-On-One Community Tutoring, Beth Godbee

English Faculty Research and Publications

In this qualitative case study of one tutoring relationship, I present new data on the extracurriculum; investigate tutoring as it occurs in community spaces; and argue that individuals can connect across systematic inequalities through personal conversations around picture books, photographs, and other visual and textual materials. Rather than ignore individual positioning within institutionalized power and privilege, tutors and writers can strengthen relationships and make tutoring more effective by evaluating how the systematic becomes personal and intimately known in one-on-one conferencing.
