The politics of sex in the Bible are complex. They are impacted and limited by the time of the stories, as well as the political landscape and laws of the region. However, since many modern religions have emerged from the text of the Hebrew Bible, it is important for scholars to continue the work of critically examining the texts in the contemporary context. This paper offers a textual analysis of several biblical stories through a feminist and decolonial lens. Tale Of Two Judiths: Queering Judith With The Works Of Judith Butler, Kat S. Lewis

Biblical texts play a significant role in shaping expectations for behavior based on gender in Western societies. In my queer reading of the Book of Judith, I argue that Judith’s performance of gender is fluid and gender expansive. I use reader-response criticism to interpret Judith in conversation with the works of Judith Butler and Saba Mahmood on gender performativity, drag, and agency. This queer reading of Judith provides representation of gender expansiveness in biblical texts and explores queer possibilities in Judith as a way to challenge and subvert a patriarchal, heterosexist gender binary.

A Den of Thieves is a three-act play detailing the final three days of Jesus of Nazareth from the point of view of the two "thieves" with whom he was crucified. However, rather than a retelling of the Gospels, A Den of Thieves approaches the story through a historical lens, presenting a portrait of Jesus as a Jewish revolutionary leading a populist rebellion against Rome for which he was ultimately publicly executed for sedition. The play offers an examination of both faith and the foundations upon which we build faith.

Body As Battleground: Feminine Prophecy And Identity In The Ancient Mediterranean, Daniel M. Picus

Women who spoke with the voice of divinity existed in the literature and mythologies of many cultures across the ancient Mediterranean. This paper examines six of these prophetesses from ancient Greek and Jewish traditions. It shows that prophecy is an experience deeply rooted in conceptions of the human body and “femininity.” By studying prophetesses in this light, I conclude that their bodies become battlegrounds for individual identities which may otherwise be subsumed by the god for whom they prophesy.
