LSU Master's Theses

My paintings are a result of a mainly intuitive process that evolves out of the combination of shape, color, and texture and originates from personal ideologies involving health phobias and religious beliefs. The imagery in the paintings is of biological origin, cells that fill up with matter, dense spheres that recall cancerous build up, the compositions and colors are inspired by Italian Renaissance paintings. The tangible is inserted into the realm of the ethereal.

Aquinas And The Knowledge Of God, Casey Edler Jan 2005

Aquinas And The Knowledge Of God, Casey Edler

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis concerns the introduction of mystical knowledge into a debate about God that relies on scientific evidence. The thesis focuses in particular on the relevance of Thomas Aquinas' view of mystical experience. After first presenting Aquinas' theory of rapture as an anticipation of the beatific vision and distinguishing it from other ways of knowing God, I argue that such a theory convincingly renders mystical knowledge inadmissible into a debate about God that relies on scientific evidence, owing to one's inability to either remember or communicate such an experience. As a result, introducing mystical knowledge into the debate causes the …

Martin Heidegger's Phenomenology And The Science Of Mind, Charles Dale Hollingsworth Jan 2005

Martin Heidegger's Phenomenology And The Science Of Mind, Charles Dale Hollingsworth

LSU Master's Theses

Phenomenology and cognitive science present two very different ways of looking at mental activity. Recently, however, there have been some attempts to incorporate phenomenological insights and methods into cognitive science, drawing especially on the works of Martin Heidegger. The purpose of this thesis is to determine if a useful combination of cognitive science with Heidegger’s phenomenology is possible, and to determine the form such a combination might take. This thesis begins with a brief overview of the field of cognitive science, and of some of the problems within the field that might benefit from a phenomenological analysis. It then reviews …

An Exploration Of The Quantity And Quality Of Campus Sexual Assault Policies, Kayla Ann Bourg Jan 2005

An Exploration Of The Quantity And Quality Of Campus Sexual Assault Policies, Kayla Ann Bourg

LSU Master's Theses

Sexual assault disproportionately affects female college students, more so than any other group of women in the general population. Therefore, consideration for the safety needs of this particular group of women constitute a great concern for university administrators. Safety measures currently utilized at universities for decreasing sexual assault rates have been insufficient. Some researchers have turned their attention to the role of campus sexual assault policies as a means in which to alleviate this crisis. The present investigation analyzes the prevalence and quality of sexual assault policies at 102 public Doctoral/Research extensive universities in the United States. The majority of …

Liquid Architectures: Marcos Novak's Territory Of Information, Camile A. Silva Jan 2005

Liquid Architectures: Marcos Novak's Territory Of Information, Camile A. Silva

LSU Master's Theses

The idea of interactivity between humans and their environment no longer represents the only way of exploring new experiences. Equally passé is the idea that information constitutes the means for this interaction. However, this paper presents that the contemporary idea for interaction has embraced new understandings of the content of experience and the structure of space. New electronic technologies and advanced digital media have separated realities from the realm of the body and transformed experiences into a ubiquitous event. The architectural discourse, that once has been largely a discourse of form and style, has finally overcome those limitations and has …

Cultivating Parallels, Sangduk Yu Jan 2005

Cultivating Parallels, Sangduk Yu

LSU Master's Theses

I create ceramic objects that are simple, geometrical and methodical. The design of these tile-like objects initiated from the idea of serving plates. Although the functional aspect of the work in this show has evolved into a tile piece, function is a part of tile. The series of each pattern was created by repetition and enlarging a small original unit that measured one inch by one inch. This repetition with small and simple units shaped by handmade templates created complex pieces. This coexistence of simplicity and complexity led me to a deep feeling of boundlessness on the tiles. The pattern …

The Chemistry Of My Affections, David Scott Smith Jan 2005

The Chemistry Of My Affections, David Scott Smith

LSU Master's Theses

Although I have always been interested in the origins of my thought processes and the methods and compulsions that motivate my work, in past work I have avoided self portraiture, or blatant explorations into my own sense of self. With my thesis project I wanted to conduct an express exploration into the psychology of my motivations. My initial goal was to create an environment, a sense of place, where both the viewer and myself are drawn into the work, and confronted with a unique experience of personal expression. The focal point is a bath enclosed within a grotto, which symbolizes …

This Is What I Meant When I Told You, Ryan David O'Malley Jan 2005

This Is What I Meant When I Told You, Ryan David O'Malley

LSU Master's Theses

THIS IS WHAT I MEANT WHEN I TOLD YOU is a quest to visually decipher the complexities of "self." The goal is to form a relationship of honesty between my mind and my hand, the art and the viewer. The work investigates reoccurring ideas, threaded through each day, in order to create narratives based on the immediacy of emotion, and the struggle between self-realization and uncertainty. Or as one commented during my show, "A celebration of the dark side of life."

Castle To Condo, Country To Corporation: What Becomes Of Hamlet In Almereyda's Modern World, Melissa Trosclair Daigle Jan 2005

Castle To Condo, Country To Corporation: What Becomes Of Hamlet In Almereyda's Modern World, Melissa Trosclair Daigle

LSU Master's Theses

This paper looks into the inner workings of Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000). Even though Almereyda updates the setting and cuts many of the lines, sometimes entire scenes, from the source text, he is able to convey the some of the themes through his use of technology and media. While some themes do transfer into the postmodern setting, the places of discord are most interesting. Of particular interest is his use of modern technologies to display the corruption found in Shakespeare's play. These technologies, including speakerphone, surveillance equipment, wiring devices, handheld camcorders, and still photography, create an atmosphere of both continual …

Chapter 2 charts Mordred’s origins and development in Welsh and British literature. Chapter 3 focuses on the themes of unity, kinship, loyalty, adultery, and incest that emerge in connection with Mordred’s character. Chapter 4 deals with the idea that Mordred’s treacherous characteristics have been transferred upon him in the course of the British Arthurian narrative’s development. Chapter 5 discusses the possibility that Mordred’s development is in part due to Geoffrey of …

Evaluation Of The Central Narthex Portal At Sainte-Madeleine De Vèzelay, Christine Ann Zeringue Jan 2005

Evaluation Of The Central Narthex Portal At Sainte-Madeleine De Vèzelay, Christine Ann Zeringue

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines possible interpretations for the central portal sculpture found in the narthex of the church of Sainte-Madeleine de Vèzelay in France. I will discuss and support alternative interpretations of the biblical, monastic, and artistic origins of this unusual and puzzling sculpture. Studies on the narthex sculpture debate the program’s subject matter, suggesting that it may refer to the Pentecost, the Mission of the Apostles, the Ascension, or exerts of biblical text, specifically, Ephesians 2: 11-22. The thesis will also discuss the sculpture’s meaning to the lay and monastic communities living in Vézelay. It will be proposed that the …

In The Garden, Christopher B. Hutson Jan 2005

In The Garden, Christopher B. Hutson

LSU Master's Theses

This body of artwork is centered on the idea of a garden as a space in between the two systems of human and natural order. The ambiguities of this in-between space tie together ideas pertinent to both worlds, using the ancient “doctrine of signatures” as an intermediary. These ideas are explored in fourteen artworks, including large-scale and smaller drawings, lithographs, and etchings.

Do You Speak English?: A Study On English Language Proficiency Testing Of Hispanic Defendants In U.S. Criminal Courts, Jana Anette Radmann Jan 2005

Do You Speak English?: A Study On English Language Proficiency Testing Of Hispanic Defendants In U.S. Criminal Courts, Jana Anette Radmann

LSU Master's Theses

Hispanics are not only the largest language minority in the United States, but also in U.S. prisons. An increasing number of primarily Spanish-speaking defendants face the legal and linguistic challenges of a U.S. courtroom. Constitutional and statutory protections have been put in place to guarantee that non-native English defendants have access to a court interpreter during their trial. Yet, under these protections it is left to the presiding judge to determine whether a court interpreter is truly needed. Thus, the judge has to determine if the comprehension of the non-native English defendant is “sufficiently inhibited” as to require language assistance …

Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound, Cameron Hideo Bourg Jan 2005

Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound, Cameron Hideo Bourg

LSU Master's Theses

The subject of Maya music is by no means a new field of study for Hispanic cultural scholars or Mesoamerican anthropologists. For example, the archeological reports of Dr. Norman Hammond and Dr. Paul Healy have greatly increased the information in this area of study. The instrumentation utilized by ancient Maya musicians and the raw materials that were the essence of their production have been the major themes in these previous publications. However, these perspectives exclude the sound of music and aspects of ancient Maya society. This thesis has been planned to examine ancient Maya music according to archaeology, society and …

Black Catholicism: Religion And Slavery In Antebellum Louisiana, Lori Renee Pastor Jan 2005

Black Catholicism: Religion And Slavery In Antebellum Louisiana, Lori Renee Pastor

LSU Master's Theses

The practice of Catholicism extended across racial boundaries in colonial Louisiana, and interracial worship continued to characterize the religious experience of Catholics throughout the antebellum period. French and Spanish missionaries baptized natives, settlers, and slaves, and the Catholic Church required Catholic planters to baptize and catechize their slaves. Most slaveholders outside New Orleans, however, were lax in the religious education of slaves. Work holidays did not always correspond to religious holy days, and the number of slave baptisms and confirmations on Catholic plantations often depended on the willingness of the local priest, or the slaves themselves, to attend the parish …

American Disillusionment And The Search For Self-Fulfillment In The 1970'S: A Cultural History Of Taxi Driver, Annie Hall, And Saturday Night Fever, Joshua Elliot Lubin Jan 2005

American Disillusionment And The Search For Self-Fulfillment In The 1970'S: A Cultural History Of Taxi Driver, Annie Hall, And Saturday Night Fever, Joshua Elliot Lubin

LSU Master's Theses

Three popular and critically acclaimed films of the post-Watergate era illustrated and criticized the period’s disillusionment. Likewise, a series of political and economic crises spawned a shift in American culture. The Sixties’ mass social movements dissolved into the Seventies and launched a trend in which Americans became preoccupied with themselves more than the state of the nation. Controlling one’s own destiny became a collective obsession when confronted with the period’s various political and economic ailments. The “Me” decade turned inward rather than concern itself with public issues. Therefore, American culture earned dubious labels such as narcissistic and decadent from critics …

Monasticism In Anglo-Saxon England: An Analysis Of Selected Hagiography From Northumbria Written In The Years After The Council Of Whitby, Carrie Couvillon Jan 2005

Monasticism In Anglo-Saxon England: An Analysis Of Selected Hagiography From Northumbria Written In The Years After The Council Of Whitby, Carrie Couvillon

LSU Master's Theses

Hagiography, writings about saints, was generally a means of venerating a saint's life. An author of hagiography wrote to advance his own salvation as well as to educate his audience on the proper practice of Christianity. Anglo-Saxon hagiography written in the years after the Council of Whitby in 664, however, also showed more support for the Roman tradition as opposed to Celtic Christianity. In an era when Christians in England were divided both culturally and religiously, unification under a single tradition as the one true representative of the faith was essential. This paper is an analysis of four important hagiographical …

Rhetoric, Form, And Sovereignty In Schubert's "Prometheus," D. 674, Erica Brady Angert Jan 2005

Rhetoric, Form, And Sovereignty In Schubert's "Prometheus," D. 674, Erica Brady Angert

LSU Master's Theses

Franz Schubert's "Prometheus," D. 674 (1819), sets a free-verse dramatic monologue by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in which Prometheus, the Titan who presented fire and hope to mankind, declares himself independent from Zeus. This song belongs to a small group of Schubert's Lieder that resemble scenes from operas more than tonally-closed art songs. The paper discusses some of Schubert's compositional influences in the vocal genre, including Johann Friedrich Reichardt, who composed an earlier setting of the same "Prometheus" text. This paper explores the rhetorical structure of Goethe's text, which follows Quintilian's model for an effective argument, and which Schubert punctuates …

The Roles Of Melibea/Isabelle/Hippolyta In Tony Kushner's Adaptation Of The Illusion: A Production Thesis In Acting, Michelle Elain Mccoy

LSU Master's Theses

The roles of Melibea/Isabelle/Hippolyta in The Illusion, freely adapted by Tony Kushner, was selected as a thesis project in the fall semester of 2004. This thesis is a written record of the actor's work on the character throughout the rehearsal process and performance of the production. It contains four parts: an introduction, a character analysis, a four-column score and an appendix that includes production photos.

Felt, Yvonne Pierce James Jan 2005

Felt, Yvonne Pierce James

LSU Master's Theses

My work is largely autobiographical and the way I express myself is the product of memories and life experiences. I grew up as one of a family of ten children and learned early the values of sharing and helping others. We were also taught not to waste anything. We learned to recycle as part of our daily life. As you will see in my work almost all of the materials I use are found objects or recycled materials. In growing up as part of a large, rural, southern family, there was also a tradition of ‘women’s work’. Nearly all of …

The Intention/Foresight Distinction In The Doctrine Of Double Effect: From Theoretical Impasses And Double-Think To Practical Applications In Bioethics, Mitchell R. Thomas, Iii Jan 2005

The Intention/Foresight Distinction In The Doctrine Of Double Effect: From Theoretical Impasses And Double-Think To Practical Applications In Bioethics, Mitchell R. Thomas, Iii

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to address the doubts that surround the intention/foresight distinction of the Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE). The claim is made by some that this distinction is merely a semantic one or if real, it is morally irrelevant. It will be argued that this is the result of doubts that surround the contributions of theory in applied ethics and the double think that sometimes results from the misuse of the DDE. I will argue that the intention/foresight distinction in the DDE is a real one and can be made on the level of practice, without …

Restoration, Religion, And Revenge, Heather Thornton Jan 2005

Restoration, Religion, And Revenge, Heather Thornton

LSU Master's Theses

The subject of this thesis is religious dissent in Restoration England. The government of Charles II and the reinstated Church of England both had programs on how to deal with the problem of religious nonconformity. This project presents the punitive legislation supported by king, parliament, and church to stamp out dissent. These programs were unable to sway the beliefs of committed nonconformists who gave testimony to the strength of their beliefs by facing persecution and imprisonment.

The Economics Of Neutrality: Switzerland And The United States In World War Ii, Matthew Schandler Jan 2005

The Economics Of Neutrality: Switzerland And The United States In World War Ii, Matthew Schandler

LSU Master's Theses

The following study addresses the contentious issue of Swiss economic policy during the Second World War. In particular, it concentrates on the deterioration of Swiss-American relations that resulted from Switzerland’s economic ties to Nazi Germany. It is argued that Switzerland’s survival as a neutral and democratic country depended less on the defense preparations of the Swiss Army and more on the difficult trade negotiations with both the Axis and Allies. Varied sources that include American and Swiss governmental reports, diplomatic documents, and contemporary accounts of the war, support the argument that although moral considerations played a secondary role to economic …

La Madame Et La Mademoiselle: Creole Women In Louisiana, 1718-1865, Katy Frances Morlas Jan 2005

La Madame Et La Mademoiselle: Creole Women In Louisiana, 1718-1865, Katy Frances Morlas

LSU Master's Theses

In Louisiana during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a unique group of people known as Creole created a culture that differed from the rest of the United States. Descendants of the first French and Spanish settlers, Creoles both black and white struggled to maintain their heritage despite an influx of Anglo-American Protestants into Louisiana; women in particular sought to preserve their culture. Although black Creole women have received significant attention, their white counterparts remain virtually absent in scholarship. This thesis focuses on the lives of white Creole women in the River Parishes and New Orleans and seeks to recreate the …
