A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel
A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For history sources, I have depended heavily on the relevant pieces of literature in my possession, on those of Loma Linda University, California, and of the University of Washington, Seattle, and on those in the Arab Republic of Egypt, particularly at Al-Azhar University, the American University at Cairo, and the British Consulate in Cairo. Further, I have had personal interviews with professors at Loma Linda and Seattle, and with Muslim and Christian scholars (clergy and laity) in Egypt and Nigeria.
Since this survey is more historical than sociological, and since Islamic da'wah is twelve to thirteen centuries older than sociological …

Culture Shock And Adaptation Among Student Missionaries To Japan, Sheryl J. Craig
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to delineate certain parameters of the experience of student missionaries to Japan. This study was a longitudinal, descriptive study which identified background characteristics, aspects of the adaptation process, and stages and intensity of culture shock.
A group of twenty-seven student missionaries were followed from their arrival in Japan, which occurred over a three-month summer period, through the following May, just prior to their expected departure. Data were gathered using interviews, questionnaires, a semantic differential (to measure attitudes), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.
The time when subjects were most at risk for high anxiety, poorer …
A Survey Of Adolescent Reading Habits And Influences : A Study In Selected Parochial Secondary Schools, Sylvia J. Davis
A Survey Of Adolescent Reading Habits And Influences : A Study In Selected Parochial Secondary Schools, Sylvia J. Davis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Adolescent literature, written by authors with a concern for the illiteracy in the United States, and read by students growing in their ability to comprehend life, is a vital link in the personal exploration and adjustment needed by young persons as they proceed into adulthood. Many polls have been conducted by teachers and librarians to learn which authors and topics are meaningful to the young student at the secondary level. It is hoped that this study might assist the teacher in understanding the reading habits of students in a parochial atmosphere by providing a background to evaluate assignments given and …
Mutiny On The Bounty : California Newspaper Reaction To Wpa Strikes In July 1939, Lawrence D. White
Mutiny On The Bounty : California Newspaper Reaction To Wpa Strikes In July 1939, Lawrence D. White
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
What would be the reaction of American citizens to welfare recipients striking against the government which aided them?
In July, 1939, over one hundred thousand Works Projects Administration (WPA) workers protested a change in working hours and salary by striking. WPA, created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935, was an attempt to aid the unemployed through work relief programs. Earlier New Deal efforts at work relief, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) and Civil Works Administration (CWA), had not succeeded in meeting the demands of able-bodied, but idle workers.
WPA, however, faced a major problem that would recur throughout …
Creative Imagination In Joyce Cary's Trilogies, E. Christian
Creative Imagination In Joyce Cary's Trilogies, E. Christian
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis describes Joyce Cary's theories of creative imagination and how the characters in his two trilogies reflect those theories. To Cary, creative imagination is essential for society's improvement. He believes that everyone--not just artists and writers--can have creative imagination, and in his novels he shows the results of living with and without it.
Joyce Cary was born in 1888, in Ireland. His mother died when he was nine, but his close-knit family gave him the security he needed to develop his creativity. As a boy he voraciously read adventure stories and led a gang. Throughout his life he dealt …
The Theory Of Contraries In Robert Frost's Narratives, Peggy E. Wahlen
The Theory Of Contraries In Robert Frost's Narratives, Peggy E. Wahlen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Robert Frost's theory of contraries pervades both his short, lyric poems and his longer, narrative poems. This theory, which is the idea that life consists of two opposing elements, is recognized by the critics to be one of the most common themes running through his lyric poems. However, the narrative poems are almost exclusively approached critically from the standpoint of form and style.
This thesis shows that the theory of contraries is an important concept in the narratives. The framework of Frost's theory has been applied to three areas pertinent to his treatment of the men and women in his …
Septimius Felton: Hawthorne's Last Novel, Pam Dietrich
Septimius Felton: Hawthorne's Last Novel, Pam Dietrich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Septimius Felton is a little-known work by the well known Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book was the third of four attempts Hawthorne made near the end of his life to construct a full-fledged romance. His first two attempts were titled The Ancestral Footstep and Doctor Grimshaw's Secret. The final try was called The Dolliver Romance. Thus, Septimius Felton has been conveniently junked with the other scraps Hawthorne produced in his last few years, but it has been unjustly criticized, I believe, for the little novel not only shows the author's skill and talent but also offers the reader pleasurable reading. …
