The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith Jul 2023

The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay documents the process and outcomes of a structured, group-based effort used to explore the connections between the biblical worldview and librarianship. Participants in the inquiry process included the author (as moderator) and seven of his colleagues. The process entailed examining four “frames” of the biblical narrative (Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation) and eliciting implications for the realm of libraries. The biblical worldview was found to provide remarkably practical theory concerning libraries, accounting for their existence across diverse cultures worldwide; plausibly explaining virtues, flaws, opportunities, and challenges; and prescribing principles through which Christians can advance God’s kingdom through library …

Is It Useful? Orthophosphate Mapping Of An Excavated Cellar Of A Mid 1700’S Tavern In New London Va, Thomas M. Bender, Randy Lichtenberger

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The partially backfilled cellar of Mead’s Tavern (VDHR # 015-0120) a circa 1760’s building in New London Virginia, was studied by orthophosphate (PO43) mapping of the recently exposed, culturally sterile, subsoil floor. Prior studies of the cellar had exposed a hearth along with features that were speculated to be wall partitions for subdivision of the cellar. The full intended purpose for those exposed features is unknown. To further probe that exposed subsoil prior to a major engineering stabilization of the tavern’s foundation, a chemical mapping of surface PO43- levels in the cellar was done. The …

“Christians, Race, And Crt: A Response To Gerald Mcdermott”, Michael Jones May 2022

“Christians, Race, And Crt: A Response To Gerald Mcdermott”, Michael Jones

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Gerald McDermott has attempted to critique David French’s defense of the Christian appropriation of Critical Race Theory. In examining McDermott’s critique, I find that he employs at least three distinct arguments. After examining each of these, I find that none of them succeeds in proving its point. Hence I conclude that McDermott’s attempt to repudiate French’s position is unsuccessful.

CAPG focuses on forming a safe community to process and recover from feelings of fear and shame, as seen in the sub-title: Transforming Fear and Shame with Compassion, Courage, and Community. Why make the focus of a personal growth or counseling group fear and shame? Shame, which includes the experience of fear, has been described as a trans-diagnostic, underlying cause of many clinical concerns. CAPG combines best practices for the treatment of shame and fear and explicitly focuses on helping participants form a safe, inclusive relationship with one another to heal from shame.

A Biblical Philosophy Of Children, Susan Lovett Jan 2021

A Biblical Philosophy Of Children, Susan Lovett

Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a Christian institution who holds to a high view of Scriptures, we should most certainly include a thorough examination of what the Bible has to say about the education of young children. The Bible, when correctly understood, serves as a filter for all the other philosophies and thoughts of men in regard to the care of children. Who could know what is best for children more than their Creator?

These flawed misconceptions of the Gospels lead as well to mistaken understandings of the book of Acts and the New Testament epistles. The Gospels the Historical Foundation was written to correct contemporary confusion abroad both in our land and world.

Entrust To Faithful Men: Pastoral Ministry And The Responsibility Of Mentoring, Jacob Dunlow

In the apostle Paul's last letter, he entreated Timothy to take what he had learned and entrust it to other faithful men, who would, in turn, entrust it to others (2 Tim 2:2). This paper focuses on the pastoral imperative for mentoring leaders from biblical and historical perspectives, and then analyzes several modern approaches to mentoring future leaders through established programs found in the local church and in the academy. As a result, the paper demonstrates the importance of mentoring future leaders for local church ministry.

On The Wicket Way: Kingdom Leadership In A Secular World, R. Wayne Stacy Oct 2020

On The Wicket Way: Kingdom Leadership In A Secular World, R. Wayne Stacy

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, though written in the 17th century, still speaks profoundly to what is arguably the most pressing issue facing the contemporary Christian church; namely, the church’s relationship with the world. In allegorical fashion, Bunyan makes the case that the Christian life is pilgrimage from this world to the next. On route, while the Christian is clearly and obviously “in” the world, the Christian should never settle in and settle down and become “of” the world. On such a pilgrimage, a tenuous, and sometimes tendentious, balance between two worlds must be maintained. The Christian community, then, is a kingdom …

Quarantine. Wearing a mask. Keeping safer at home. Pandemic. No public worship. Closing and reopening. Many of us think of these far more often than we did a year ago, since we have never experienced anything comparable to COVID-19. But many of us have heard about the great Spanish Flu pandemic at the end of World War I, and we know that a lot of these concepts were important then.

An Evaluation Of Incomplete Spiritual Formation And Discipleship, David A. Mcgee Apr 2020

An Evaluation Of Incomplete Spiritual Formation And Discipleship, David A. Mcgee

Faculty Publications and Presentations

John Cole writes, “There exists a serious gap in the mind of the many believers between what they know to be the goal of sanctification and growth and where they know they actually are in their lives.”1 Human observation and the biblical text leave the follower of Christ perplexed about the dissonance between the ultimate sanctified life versus the daily reality of personal experience. The various forms of spiritual formation and discipleship do not adequately account for the gap that exists between a method and implementation in the life of a believer.

Stress Perception And Measurement In Missionary Populations, Laurie A. Tone, Fernando Garzon, John C. Thomas, Brigitte Ritchey, Mike Malek-Ahmadi Jan 2020

Stress Perception And Measurement In Missionary Populations, Laurie A. Tone, Fernando Garzon, John C. Thomas, Brigitte Ritchey, Mike Malek-Ahmadi

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Christian missionaries experience numerous stressors across multiple domains. To understand their unique experiences, a targeted assessment is required. There is no known psychometrically tested measure that captures the nuances of stress for this population. To that end, as part of a larger study, the quantitative CHOPS Stress Inventory, a new tool for measuring missionary stress was developed and showed good initial psychometric qualities when compared to an established stress measure. Furthermore, the Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) of survey findings on 267 cross-cultural evangelical missionaries noted that both age and sex demonstrated significant effects on perceived stress scores. Implications for missionary …

An Introduction To Blaga's Philosophy For Readers Of Zalmoxis, Michael Jones Jan 2020

An Introduction To Blaga's Philosophy For Readers Of Zalmoxis, Michael Jones

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In his excellent preface to Plantus' translation of Zalmoxis, Keith Hitchins mentions, but does not describe in detail, the philosophical system created by Lucian Blaga as a compliment to and source of his drama and poetry. In her forward, Plantus, the translator of Zalmoxis, likewise alludes to the philosophical undercurrents present in Blaga’s literary works in general and in Zalmoxis in particular. In my chapter I briefly outline this philosophical system for the readers of Zalmoxis. I do so – and the translator has invited me to do so – because, while Blaga’s poetry is not slave to his philosophy, …

Christian Higher Education And Participation In The Redemptive Work Of God, John R. Markley Nov 2019

Christian Higher Education And Participation In The Redemptive Work Of God, John R. Markley

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This history of distinctively Christian institutions of higher education in America signals the importance of missional vigilance for stakeholders. This article proposes a framework for Christian faculty to approach their work of educating students in a distinctively Christian way, by orienting each discipline and field of study to the main points of redemptive history as defined by Christian theology. When we train students at a Christian institution, we should be training them to become participants in the redemptive work of God. By taking an intentional approach to this (i.e., orienting our disciplines and the subject-matter to redemptive history), we help …

Toward A Biblical Theology Of Leadership: Followers Who Shepherd And Serve Others To Follow, Benjamin Forrest

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Christian leadership as a subset ofleadership is unique. It is unique because ofthe modifier of “Christian.”1 The meaning ofthis modifier, however, is often unclear in the minds ofthose who use it. Most authors who write on this topic have thought long and hard about what this means, but the average Christian still wrestles with the question of “what makes leadership Christian?”

Critical Analysis Of Hugh Ross’ Progressive Day-Age Creationism Through The Framework Of Young-Earth Creationism, David A. Mcgee

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the early 1800s, the evangelical community has sought to harmonize the scientific interpretations of long periods of time and the early chapters of Genesis to determine the appropriate age of the universe. There are primarily two groups—those who believe the universe is billions of years old and those who believe the universe is thousands of years old. One view within the former group is called Progressive Day-Age Creationism. This view is taught by Hugh Ross and is quite popular within the evangelical community. This article analyzes primarily the writings of Ross and the implications that his view may have …

Setting The Record Straight, Nathaniel Pockras

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America has existed since the 18th century, and the actions of its governing Synod are published in annual minutes, but the actions have never been recorded in a single catalogue. An organizational schema is proposed, improving on the schemata of similar catalogues for other Presbyterian denominations: actions are listed chronologically and assigned subject headings to facilitate the creation of a thesaurus. Inclusion criteria are specified, and the catalogue is described in a manner approachable without specialized training.

10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tacticsof the Devil. 12 For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens (Eph 6:10–12).[1]

This is a passage most of us are familiar with and perhaps we have heard a message or two on the armor of God from the following verses in Ephesians 6 but do we …
