Illustration Student Work
This illustration is a cover for a mid-century music playlist. Inspired by old jazz vinyl covers and Rene Gruau‘s fashion illustrations, it has a plain cream background with a thick pink border, mid-century styled typography, and an elegant woman in a turquoise dress. The woman is modeled off of Julie London, a prominent jazz singer from the 1940s to 1960s.

Los Tamales: Alimento Para Los Dioses, Los Espíritus De La Milpa, El Monte, Los Difuntos Y Las Personas Vivas, Laura Elena Sotelo Santos
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Forced Family Separation: U.S. Crimes Against Indigenous Peoples, Lauren Heidbrink, Giovanni Batz, David W. Barillas Chón
Forced Family Separation: U.S. Crimes Against Indigenous Peoples, Lauren Heidbrink, Giovanni Batz, David W. Barillas Chón
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Forced family separation under the U.S. Zero Tolerance policy is not only a crime against humanity, but also a crime against Indigenous Peoples, which includes the Maya. Rooted in white supremacist ideologies and settler colonialism, contemporary forced family separation continues historical violence inflicted upon Maya Peoples by the U.S. government. Submitted to the International Criminal Court, this amicus brief contends that the Court should investigate and hold the U.S. accountable for crimes against Indigenous Peoples under the U.S. Zero Tolerance policy. The amicus brief begins with an overview of Maya Peoples in present-day Guatemala and the meanings and practices of …

Aromas Y Sabores Para Los Dioses Mayas: Alimentos De Ixim Y Pom, Diana Peralta Cervantes
Aromas Y Sabores Para Los Dioses Mayas: Alimentos De Ixim Y Pom, Diana Peralta Cervantes
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Tamales In Yucatán: Reflections On 52 Years Of Piib Gastronomy, Allan F. Burns
Tamales In Yucatán: Reflections On 52 Years Of Piib Gastronomy, Allan F. Burns
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Abstract: “The first time I made tamales in the Yucatan of Mexico was in a village close to Tixcacal Guardia, Quintana Roo in 1972, some 52 years ago as I write this essay. It was in the fall and extended families were celebrating the harvest of milpas with something called “jaanali kol” (the feast of the milpa). We dug a pit, about four by eight feet oblong, lined it with stones, and built a fire. We were all men around the fire, and women were nearby in a house making chicken stew and other foods.” So begins this personal reflection …
Cocinar Para Dioses Y Hombres: Los Tamales De Los Lacandones Del Norte, Alice Balsanelli
Cocinar Para Dioses Y Hombres: Los Tamales De Los Lacandones Del Norte, Alice Balsanelli
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

"The Art World of Isabella Gardner and Fenway Court" presents a comprehensive examination of the influential cultural milieu created by Isabella Stewart Gardner, focusing on the inception and evolution of Fenway Court, now the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This paper delved into the intricate tapestry of Gardner's relationships with prominent artists such as John Singer Sargent, Anders Leonard Zorn, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Denis Bunker, and several other female artists, illuminating her pivotal role as a patron and tastemaker in the late 19th and early 20th century America.
Beginning with the genesis of the museum, the paper traces Gardner's vision …
The Value Of Mentorship For Black Ballerinas, Anna Dunn
The Value Of Mentorship For Black Ballerinas, Anna Dunn
Dissertations
Much research has been done in other fields about the relationship of gender and race to the success of mentors to increase student confidence to pursue additional training or a career in certain fields. The purpose of this study was to articulate formally the importance of the relationship between Black ballet students and a mentor who has lived a similar life experience, having navigated the ballet industry as a Black ballerina. This research sought to answer the questions of what value do Black ballet students perceive in having a Black ballerina as a mentor and how white ballet teachers can …

Finding Focus: Authentic Inquiry And Composition In The Third Space, Noah Brewer
Dissertations
This research seeks to better understand the attitudes and dispositions of advanced-level English Language Arts students toward the activities of academic research and writing, and to explore the ways that critical pedagogies focused on authentic inquiry and composition interact with these attitudes. The project draws upon research in student motivation, sociocultural definitions of literacy, and theories of hybrid identity in order to discover the potential impact of engaging students in critical reflection on their own meaning-making practices, and of curricular and pedagogical choices aimed at making the lessons of the classroom more relevant to the demands of real-world literacy practices …
Crux: Urban Ecology And Cultural Essence, Maria Del Valle
Crux: Urban Ecology And Cultural Essence, Maria Del Valle
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The CRUX, stands for islands grappling with the aftermath of hurricanes. Its transformative vision is set against the backdrop of a city scarred by abandoned homes, tainted water sources, agricultural decay, and a crippled electrical grid. CRUX aspires to breathe new life into this urban landscape, envisioning a self-sustaining city dedicated to nurturing community ties for the resilient people of Yabucoa. The testament to the restoration is not just physical structures, but the research studies the very spirit of the community. By delving into the realms of art, farming, Afro-Carribbean culture, and food, the project seeks to create a vibrant …
The Question Of Design In The Context Of The First Australian Nations: Designing Reparations Through Decolonial Architecture, Eli Abamonte
The Question Of Design In The Context Of The First Australian Nations: Designing Reparations Through Decolonial Architecture, Eli Abamonte
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Forget about tourist postcards and picture-perfect landscapes. Australia's true heart beats in the ancient stories of the Indigenous communities that tell them, their vibrant cultural tapestry woven beneath the surface. My research dives into this tapestry, not as an Architect with blueprints imposing my own vision, but as a student with an open ear and collaborative spirit. Australia’s vastness holds countless stories, but my research led me deep into the heart of East Arnhem Land, where ancient legends whisper in the wind and the Yolngu people dwell. Anthropologists like Bruno Descola shattered my singular view of the world, revealing a …
Shut Up And Dribble: The Political Contradictions Of Black Masculinity In Sports, Isaiah Rogers
Shut Up And Dribble: The Political Contradictions Of Black Masculinity In Sports, Isaiah Rogers
Master's Theses
"Shut Up and Dribble: The Political Contradictions of Black Masculinity in Sports" is a comprehensive analysis of literature and case studies that explore the regulation and representation of the black masculine body within sports. This thesis investigates three primary themes—sport, protest, and black masculinity—and seeks to uncover the evolution of various black masculine figures and their endeavors toward racial inclusivity. By analyzing sports literature, this work examines the experiences of five significant black athletes, including Jack Johnson, Ron Artest, and Colin Kaepernick, to illustrate how sports environments police the black body. Additionally, this thesis emphasizes two archetypes of black masculinity: …
See Me Show Me: Black Women Representation In Television Sitcoms, Lauryn Jennings
See Me Show Me: Black Women Representation In Television Sitcoms, Lauryn Jennings
Master's Theses
Television is a commonplace item within the households of America. It brings the family together as well teaching people about other people. With this Black women have been shown in one-dimensional images that are harmful. Although these stereotypes are old they are still present within modern television sitcoms.
Back To Black: Analyzing The Presence Of White Control Over Black Representations In Media And The Responses Of Black Creators, Serena Smith
Back To Black: Analyzing The Presence Of White Control Over Black Representations In Media And The Responses Of Black Creators, Serena Smith
Master's Theses
The focus of this thesis largely discusses the perceptions held by White people of Black people and the Black community, and how these discriminatory perceptions have been presented in various forms of consumable media and other societal aspects throughout American history. These racially biased misrepresentations have also negatively affected the progression and internalization of the concept of Black cultural identities for Black people throughout history and how they are able to relate to the rest of American society. I am arguing that contemporary media and films produced by Black creators, such as Cord Jefferson’s 2023 film American Fiction, tend …
Diversity And Inclusivity In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Emily Morris
Diversity And Inclusivity In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Emily Morris
Master's Projects
Diversity and inclusion are recent topics flooding everyday language and the way we operate rules and regulations within companies, social media, and, of course, college campuses. While college campus life has shifted to be more accepting of diversity and inclusivity within the past several decades, there is still much more work to be done. The following paper starts to complete some of that work by looking at how other first-year composition programs within the University System of Georgia implement diversity and inclusion in their classrooms by looking at the current literature that exists and adding in interviews and survey results …
The Unseen Pen: The Hidden History Of Black Women Writers During The Civil Rights Movement, Serenity Hill
The Unseen Pen: The Hidden History Of Black Women Writers During The Civil Rights Movement, Serenity Hill
Master's Theses
As taught in standard high-school and general educational courses, integration was a primary goal of the Civil Rights Movement; however, when this era is discussed in classrooms, by historians, and in textbooks there are key perspectives and acknowledgements that are less recognized. The visibility of the Black women who pushed forward the movement is often reduced, overlooked, or overshadowed because of the more celebrated contributions of their male counterparts. Focusing on an era before the internet, with the eloquent writing of activists like Dr. King memorialized, this project aims to showcase how changes in course curriculum can shed light on …

Reproductive (In)Justice In Contemporary Dystopian Fiction: A Critical White Feminist Analysis Of The Handmaid’S Tale (2017–) And Future Home Of The Living God (2017), Kaelyn Ireland
Master's Theses
This thesis employs a critical white feminist lens to analyze themes of human migration in two contemporary feminist dystopian texts: the TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale and Louise Erdrich’s 2017 novel Future Home of the Living God. This work draws from fields and frameworks such as reproductive justice, migration studies, and Indigenous studies to create a nuanced critique of both texts and interrogate the ways whiteness impacts the feminist dystopian heroine’s story and, potentially, audience reception. I assert that HMT and FH can best be understood as a mirror for the current state of …
Diegetic Sonification For Low Vision Gamers, Jhané Dawes
Diegetic Sonification For Low Vision Gamers, Jhané Dawes
Master's Theses
There are not many games designed for all players that provide accommodations for low vision users. This means that low vision users may not get to engage with the gaming community in the same way as their sighted peers. In this thesis, I explore how diegetic sonification can be used as a tool to support these low vision gamers in the typical gaming environment. I asked low vision players to engage with a prototype game level with two diegetic sonification techniques applied, without the use of their corrective lenses. I found that participants had more enjoyment and experienced less difficulty …
