From Individual Salvation To Social Salvation: Why Evangelist B. Fay Mills Changed His Revival Message, Constance P. Murray Dec 2011

From Individual Salvation To Social Salvation: Why Evangelist B. Fay Mills Changed His Revival Message, Constance P. Murray

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Rev. B. Fay Mills was a popular, late nineteenth century Protestant evangelist whose fame approached that of the eminent Gospel preacher, Dwight L. Moody. Preaching to audiences in large urban settings, Mills’ revivals captured headlines and significant column space as he preached sermons of individual salvation from sin from the perspective of Christian orthodoxy. Yet, just as he was reaching the very top of the field of itinerant evangelists, he changed his message to reflect his growing interest in and association with the Social Gospel movement. This thesis investigates the reasons for his shift in theological viewpoint and public proclamations. …

Continuing Abby Whiteside's Legacy--The Research Of Pianist Sophia Rosoff's Pedagogical Approach, Carol Ann Barry

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Since 1956, Sophia Rosoff has dedicated herself to performing and teaching principles developed by piano pedagogue Abby Whiteside. Whiteside became internationally known between 1930 and 1956 for her pioneering work in the study of the use of the body in producing beautiful sound and freedom of technique. Her research was considered revolutionary and instrumental in raising physical awareness in pianists. Committed to ongoing research, Rosoff continues to teach in her apartment in the Upper East Side of New York City. The purpose of this document is to present Rosoff’s musical background, research, teaching philosophy, and the strategies she has developed …

Holism And Non-Separability Applied To Quantum Mechanics, Catherine E. Nisson May 2011

Holism And Non-Separability Applied To Quantum Mechanics, Catherine E. Nisson

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Einstein was never satisfied with quantum mechanics. He argued that quantum mechanics was incomplete for two main reasons; it violated the locality principle and the separability principle. The violation of separability is an unavoidable consequence of quantum interactions. Non-separability can be seen in quantum entanglement. Non-locality, however, is more controversial. Einstein and his associates published the EPR paper in order to argue for the incompleteness of quantum mechanics. Years later, John Bell formulated what became known as the Bell Inequalities in response to the EPR paper. The Bell Inequalities are seen as a major obstacle for quantum locality. I will …

Teaching Music To Students With Multiple Disabilities: A Study Into Teachers' Perspectives And Practices For Self-Contained General Music Instruction, Angela D. Clemens May 2011

Teaching Music To Students With Multiple Disabilities: A Study Into Teachers' Perspectives And Practices For Self-Contained General Music Instruction, Angela D. Clemens

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study investigates the experience of elementary teachers providing music instruction to students with multiple disabilities in self-contained classrooms. With legislation mandating public education for students with special needs, music teachers increasingly encounter these students in their classrooms, which range from inclusion to self-contained environments. Research indicates that music is a valid and valuable tool for supporting extra-musical learning as well as fostering musical growth in students with special needs. Additionally, research provides insight into inclusion experiences for teachers and for students. However, research into self-contained instruction is minimal. This study addressed that gap through phenomenological exploration of teachers in …

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson May 2011

The Virginia Iron, Coal, And Coke Company And The Growth And Decline Of Southern Appalachia’S Iron Industry: 1880-1930., Patrick Dalton Dickerson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

During the late nineteenth century, the penetration of industrial capitalism into southern Appalachia fundamentally altered the region’s economy. Historians have thoroughly studied this period’s coal and timber industries, but little scholarly attention has been paid to the iron industry. Iron production also made great strides in both output and scale as railroads and mining increased demand for iron products. The growth of Birmingham’s iron and steel industry has dominated the studies of iron that have been done, but between the 1880s and 1920s the iron industry of southwest Virginia and east Tennessee also were thoroughly modernized. The consolidation of the …

Preservation Of The Old Dominion: The Role Of National Security Concerns In The Virginia Ratification Debates, Joseph Harrington May 2011

Preservation Of The Old Dominion: The Role Of National Security Concerns In The Virginia Ratification Debates, Joseph Harrington

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis will display the ways in which national security concerns played into the debate over whether Virginia should ratify the United States Constitution. The vast majority of primary sources used in this thesis come from speeches delivered by the representatives from throughout Virginia (which at this time included present-day West Virginia and Kentucky) in the Virginia Ratifying Convention. The three major areas which this thesis explores are the threat of war with other states, the threat of war with foreign nations, and the threat of slave insurrections. The chapter on threat of war with other states examines the possibility …

The Logic Of Aid: American Foreign Policy And Usaid In Rwanda, Ariel F. Hendrickson May 2011

The Logic Of Aid: American Foreign Policy And Usaid In Rwanda, Ariel F. Hendrickson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Since the end of World War II, development aid has become a permanent fixture of U.S. foreign policy. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been the primary organization for implementing the American government’s development policies. Because of this, USAID provides an excellent lens for viewing the historical trajectory of American development aid. USAID’s experience in Rwanda demonstrates the broad policy shifts that define this historical trajectory. During the 1960s, modernization theory directed development projects. In the 1970s this shifted to a needs-based mandate, and during the 1980s market liberalization programs defined USAID’s objectives. The rich relationship between …

Rhetoric Of Plagiarism: Problems, Opportunities, And Interactions, Michael Patrick Morrison May 2011

Rhetoric Of Plagiarism: Problems, Opportunities, And Interactions, Michael Patrick Morrison

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis explores the question of how James Madison University (JMU) communicates information concerning plagiarism policy and values to students, especially first-year composition students. The research covers some history of plagiarism issues, questions of why plagiarism is so difficult for scholars to define, why students plagiarize, and how attitudes in academia are changing as definitions continue to evolve. Overall, JMU communicates plagiarism poorly to students in their early stages of integrating into life at JMU, though the university still takes pains to inform students of the consequences of plagiarism through first-year composition instructors. The implications of this writing are an …

"For The Fracture Of Good Order," The Catonsville Nine Protest And Legacy, Timothy Joseph Stefonowich May 2011

"For The Fracture Of Good Order," The Catonsville Nine Protest And Legacy, Timothy Joseph Stefonowich

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

1968 was a tumultuous year in American history. The United States government was in the middle of the Cold War and their involvement in Vietnam reached its highest level to date. Meanwhile, on the domestic front, the country was erupting in turmoil. Many American citizens engaged in protest against the government’s overseas efforts, and took to great lengths to resist the war effort. These protestors encompassed people from all walks life, students, clergy, professors, lawyers, and politicians. One of the strongest groups of this anti-war movement was religious. By May of 1968 one group of Catholics were so fed up …

The Evolution Of Style In The Neoclassical Works Of Stravinsky, Kyle Szabo May 2011

The Evolution Of Style In The Neoclassical Works Of Stravinsky, Kyle Szabo

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The compositional output of Igor Stravinsky is roughly divided into three periods: Russian, Neoclassical, and Serial. In his neoclassical period of composition, Stravinsky developed highly refined methods of formal construction, harmonic management, and use of counterpoint. Careful analysis of several neoclassical and transitional works serves to demonstrate Stravinsky’s innovative methods of voice leading, economy of pitch class set material, and ingenuity in redefining Classical era forms. Stravinsky’s Russian ballets are stylistically focused on practical and stage-oriented formal structures, stratified counterpoint, and thematic content originating in folk materials. As he began writing more concert music, the extraction of these stylistic elements …

An Insult To Authority: The Jewish Means To A Nazi End, Samuel Joseph Preston Anno Di Stefano May 2011

An Insult To Authority: The Jewish Means To A Nazi End, Samuel Joseph Preston Anno Di Stefano

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The thesis attempts to place smuggling on the Warsaw Ghetto until the Great Deportation into the larger context of economic warfare as a Nazi policy. This largely overlooked aspect of Jewish response provides valuable insights to the larger debate because of the experimental nature of administration in the Government General and its potential impact on determining the course of the Final Solution. The paper alleges that Jewish smuggling was less a form of resistance than an aid in alleviating German responsibility for their captives’ welfare and an effective method of management. Research tools included an abundance of primary documents for …

Life In The Open Air: The Persistence Of Outdoor Air Treatment For Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients In America From The Industrial Revolution To The 1950s, Tara Darlene Mastrangelo May 2011

Life In The Open Air: The Persistence Of Outdoor Air Treatment For Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients In America From The Industrial Revolution To The 1950s, Tara Darlene Mastrangelo

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis explores the persistent use of outdoor air as a treatment for tuberculosis, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The focus of my paper differs from other scholarly works on tuberculosis in that it assumes the connections between climatology and the sanatoria/home cure movements are strong enough to warrant combining them under the term “outdoor air treatment,” rather than categorizing them as two distinct methods . Based on this premise, my paper explores the ways in which outdoor air treatment outlasted many of the changes to society which occurred during the late 19th and early 20th …

Fixing Belief: Artificial Preservatives, James Walker Tufts Iv May 2011

Fixing Belief: Artificial Preservatives, James Walker Tufts Iv

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Research opened with inquiries into the state space of the self and various modalities of the construction of the self. Flawed research design led towards a loss of original focus, spaces opened accordingly. Early sculptural work looked towards a semantic flattening through flushing out and digitally manipulated photographic and video work investigated avenues of ocular-centric landscape construction. Photoshop CS5 and its Content Aware Fill tool were engaged as collaborator and animations ensued. Hesitant time-based sketches were developed to suggest work incomplete and instead took their place. Space-based sketches followed, using the multiple to thwart focus on parts and draw it …

Building A Better Brit: Imperialism And Masculinity In The Lives And Works Of H. Rider Haggard And Rudyard Kipling, Zachary David Cady May 2011

Building A Better Brit: Imperialism And Masculinity In The Lives And Works Of H. Rider Haggard And Rudyard Kipling, Zachary David Cady

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This work began as an investigation of the role that literature played in conveying imperialistic values to children during the Victorian period. Over the course of my research into the fiction of H. Rider Haggard and Rudyard Kipling, I began to question the role of masculinity in the imperial project. This work has developed out of that line of thought. Maintaining and defending the British Empire was a man’s business, and as such the British required a generation of men that held the masculine ideals and values required to undertake such an endeavor. This need manifested itself in many ways, …

The Wounds Of The Dakota War, Sara Louisa Flint May 2011

The Wounds Of The Dakota War, Sara Louisa Flint

Abraham Lincoln's American Indian policy is often overshadowed by the study of the American Civil War and this study focuses on Lincoln's policy towards the American Indian, specifically his involvement in the Dakota War with deciding the fate of the condemned Dakota men. The uprising‟s causes are discussed in length as are the specific events of the rebellion. The study also looks at how the uprising is remembered by white and Dakota population. In addition to secondary books and articles, a large amount of newspapers, personal memoirs, and letters are used in the research. Photographs, artwork, and monuments are also …

The Supreme Brother-In-Law: Ramón Serrano Suñer And Spanish Fascism During The Franco Regime, Brian David Hill May 2011

The Supreme Brother-In-Law: Ramón Serrano Suñer And Spanish Fascism During The Franco Regime, Brian David Hill

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study focuses on the political career of Ramón Serrano Suñer, a Spanish politician whose career lasted from 1933 until 1942. Particularly, it addresses several pertinent questions about Serrano’s career and the larger Franco government, including the extent to which it was truly authoritarian and the real strength of authentic fascism in post-Civil War Spain. From 1937-1941, Serrano was the second only to his brother-in-law, the dictator Francisco Franco, in terms of political prominence. Serrano used his personal connections with Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the fascist Falange party, to vault himself from wartime refugee to …

The Necessary Blend Of Narrative And Technology In Composition: Identity Crisis Embraced, Jessica A. Lewis May 2011

The Necessary Blend Of Narrative And Technology In Composition: Identity Crisis Embraced, Jessica A. Lewis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Wendy Bishop’s work, “Suddenly Sexy: Creative Writing Rear-ends Composition,” is focused on the necessity of flexible relationships between first-year composition professors and creative nonfiction writers for the improvement of composition pedagogy. This emphasis on collaboration and merging is even more important now due to the personal relationships and self-awareness established in online writing environments. In addition to the exploration of confused definitions in expressivist theory and the negotiation that Bishop puts forth in her work, this thesis focuses on the new influences of online writing environments on writing culture. Through the process of research and narrative, Bishop’s ideals and goals …

And The Showmen Cried, “Spirit!”: Harry Houdini And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’S Search For The Truth Behind Modern Spiritualism, Stefanie Marie Strosnider-Hollis May 2011

And The Showmen Cried, “Spirit!”: Harry Houdini And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’S Search For The Truth Behind Modern Spiritualism, Stefanie Marie Strosnider-Hollis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This Master’s thesis is constructed around the Spiritualist lecture tours of Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The famed British author was an ardent Spiritualist who believed it was his personal mission to spread the religion and practices of Spiritualism in Europe, Australia, and America. Houdini, on the other hand, strove to expose deceitful mediums as con artists and fakes. In the early 1920s, both men embarked on lecture tours throughout the United States, spreading their views and attempting to sway the minds of curious Americans. The lectures were well attended, often before full houses, and were well publicized. …

Integrating Multimodal Composition Techniques In First-Year Writing Courses: Theory And Praxis, Bret Zawilski May 2011

Integrating Multimodal Composition Techniques In First-Year Writing Courses: Theory And Praxis, Bret Zawilski

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The body of this thesis seeks to explore the costs and benefits of instituting a multimodal composition pedagogy within first-year writing. Contested definitions of multimodality and multimedia provide a background for delving into the printed-word dominated discourse, where image, sound, and animation are all placed in a subordinate position relative to that of the written word. Within, many theories of multimodality and composition pedagogy are placed in contrast with one another in an attempt to discern connections in the body of already published theoretical material. The primary method of data collection for this document involved the investigation of secondary sources …

Franz Liszt: The Sonata In B Minor As Spiritual Autobiography, Jonathan David Keener May 2011

Franz Liszt: The Sonata In B Minor As Spiritual Autobiography, Jonathan David Keener

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Many composers, particularly in the 19th century, have attempted to write “autobiographical” music. Although Franz Liszt never explicitly mentioned that any of his works were autobiographical, the facts we have about his life and the symbolism within his Sonata in B Minor suggest that this piece may serve this purpose, either intentionally or subconsciously. Liszt, having strong ties to the Catholic Church, may have also consciously or unconsciously incorporated religious symbolism into the work. Works that exerted influence on the formal structure and the possible extra-musical meaning of the Sonata in B Minor include Charles-Valentine Alkan’s Grande Sonate, Robert …
