We see them every day and pass them as we rush to class. Painting, monuments, and even old photographs that remind us of Gettysburg’s past. En la Memoria histórica que presentó a la Universidad de Chile en 1844, José Victorino Lastarria sostuvo que el proceso de independencia nacional había respondido a una voluntad de emancipación nacida con la resistencia indígena al colonialismo hispano. La independencia, aseguró, fue la victoria sobre un orden que "se apoyaba (...) en las costumbres i marchaba con ellas en íntima unidad i perfecta armonía" (122-3).
