This paper aims to analyze the response to and representations of Ukrainian refugees in European countries such as Poland and the reasoning behind it. Generally, Ukrainian refugees have received a very warm and generous welcome, from both the political leaders and ordinary citizens. However, it stands in stark contrast to the way the same countries reacted to refugees fleeing places like Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. Apartheid South Africa represented a paradox as a US ally and human rights pariah. “Genocide Masquerading” uncovers the implications of US foreign policy on the rise and decline of apartheid, looking specifically at the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre and the 1976 Soweto Uprising. By comparing Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Ford, and Carter foreign policy responses, this thesis creates a comparative analysis of how effective, or ineffective, the United States was during pivotal moments in apartheid history. This thesis will not only expand on the developing South African literature but add to the conversation of international aid, diplomacy practices, and North-South relationships.

The way in which we react to scandals reveals fundamental truths about us as a society, allowing us a new lens with which to critique the world around us. This is as true today as it was in 18th-century France and 19th-century England, when the Diamond Necklace Affair and the Queen Caroline Affair wreaked havoc on the social and political climate in their respective countries. The public’s response to each of these scandals exposed deep-set frustrations and discontent with their leaders, government, and society.

Cuban musician and singer Willy Chirino, the self-proclaimed inventor of the “Miami Sound,” was sent to the United States as a teenager in the 1960s under Operation Pedro Pan to escape the influence of Fidel Castro's communist regime. Throughout his career, he has used his music to spread a personal and political agenda; his rejection of communism and the Castro regime can be seen through his song lyrics, humanitarian efforts, and direct engagement in the world of politics.

Mexican American Identities And Histories In Children’S Picture Storybooks: Thinking Critically, Thinking Diversely, Scott A. Beck

Each year increasing numbers of Mexican-heritage students are served by teachers with little knowledge of the history and diversity of the Mexican American community. This article introduces teachers to Mexican American history and diversity while taking a useful and critical look at children’s picture storybooks regarding Mexican-heritage peoples in the U.S. Ideas in the article regarding how to select, compare and contrast these picture books in the classroom will allow teachers to learn about their Mexican-heritage students, counter prejudices and stereotypes, and more effectively reach out to build academic and personal connections with these students.

Few events in recent American History have elicited as much emotionalism and controversy as the fall of South Vietnam. Although American troops had not fought in the country since 1973, Americans in the spring of 1975 were acutely sensitive to the rapidly declining military situation and the plight of thousands of Vietnamese refugees. In March and April, efforts by President Gerald R. Ford to secure emergency military aid for the Saigon government created a furor among politicians and the public.
