Beauty (Essay 8 Of Seeing: When Art And Faith Intersect), Douglas G. Campbell Jan 2002

Beauty (Essay 8 Of Seeing: When Art And Faith Intersect), Douglas G. Campbell

Faculty Publications-- Department of Art and Design

Excerpt: "Beauty as a concept has given twentieth century writers, especially art critics and art historians, a great deal of difficulty. Why is this so?Answering would take several volumes--! will settle for less.

The traditional idea of beauty has all the trappings of a universal concept. For Plato, one of the earliest and most prominent supporters of such universals, beauty, along with other concepts, had the mind of the creator as its source. For much of Christianity's existence Plato's idea of beauty was accepted--with some alterations. For one, the creator became Yahweh, creator of the universe. Secondly, though spiritual beauty …

Observe The Sons Of Ulster Talking Themselves To Death (Chapter In The Theatre Of Frank Mcguinness: Stages Of Mutability), Kathleen A. Heininge

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "Within Irish drama of the late 20'h century, the use of language as a marker for lrishness begins to shift away from a focus on accents and Hiberno-English, towards a use of language that attempts to actually establish new truths: truths about relationships and alliances, truths about history, truths about memory, and especially truths about identity. Language becomes the very means of change and hope, in drama that has become concerned with the use of language not as signifier of nation but as reiteration of the stories that might be able to change through that reiteration. What is 'true' …

Salvation And Sociology In The Methodist Episcopal Deaconess Movement, Benjamin Hartley Jan 2002

Salvation And Sociology In The Methodist Episcopal Deaconess Movement, Benjamin Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Rather than being an American innovation which was spread to missionary contexts abroad, the deaconess movement in the Methodist Episcopal Church began on the Methodist missionary frontiers of India and Germany in the late 19th century. The appeals to General Conference in April 1888 to establish the office of deaconess originated in the Bengal Conference in India and the Rock River Conference in Illinois. Bishop James Thoburn, a well-known missionary from India, led the petitions through the intricacies of the General Conference with the urging of his missionary sister, Isabella Thoburn, who had recently joined forces with Chicago's Lucy …

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "This chapter has more than one goal. First, I want to introduce readers to the apparatus of practices, institutions and virtues (PIV) that helps us understand what virtues are. Second, I want to explore the notion of politics a little, to see what its main problem is. (I will claim, perhaps surprisingly, that business management is largely a variation of politics.) Third, I want to reintroduce civility and suggest that it is an important contributor to solving the political problem (and problems of management).

Throughout this chapter, I will emphasize process. As we shall see, process is integrated in …

Introduction To A Scripture Index To Charlesworth's Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, Steve Delamarter Jan 2002

Introduction To A Scripture Index To Charlesworth's Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, Steve Delamarter

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Though some ancient lists note over 60 titles of apocryphal and pseudepigraphal works, by the early twentieth century R.H. Charles was able to offer only 17 such works for publication in volume 2 of his The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913) and two of these, Pirke A both and The Fragments of a Zadokite Work, clearly belong within the rabbinic corpus and the Dead Sea Scrolls respectively. Charlesworth includes 65 texts, many for the first time in English. 1 The net result is that the Charlesworth edition of the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha contains far …
