On Christmas... And The Character Of Sacramentality, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

On Christmas... And The Character Of Sacramentality, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "What makes something sacramental? Have you ever thought about that question? The classic answer, going back to St. Augustine, is that a sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual reality. During the Middle Ages, the church embraced as many as 30 sacraments, but Peter Lombard reduced them to the seven that are still a part of the Catholic faith. With Luther and the Reformers, the number was reduced to two- as water baptism and communion are the two most closely connected to New Testament practices. But what is it that really makes something …

On The Healing And Re-Deeming Power Of Jesus Christ, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

On The Healing And Re-Deeming Power Of Jesus Christ, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "The healing and redeeming workings of Jesus Christ are amazingly interwoven. In fact, the same word in Greek is translated as "healing" and as "salvation" in English. Both healing and redemption are twin and central aspects of the Gospel of Christ, and yet, another connection exists, as well. It is the liberating power of Truth."

When Tempted By Sanity..., Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

When Tempted By Sanity..., Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "In the well-known musical Man of La Mancha, Don Quixote sets off as a knight-errant on a quest to right the world's wrongs and to fight for the truth no matter the cost. He is joined, of course, by Sancho Panza, who believes that he will profit from sharing the spoils of their adventures. Jousting at windmills and challenging passersby as evil knights to be dealt with, however, Quixote comes across as a poor fool who is out of touch with reality. His image has even been stamped indelibly upon the English language in the form of an …

On Spirituality... And Human Sexuality, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

On Spirituality... And Human Sexuality, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Spirituality and sexuality. An unlikely coupling. Many Christians assume that, like oil and water, the two simply do not mix. And yet, spirituality and sexuality occupy the most personal and intimate parts of our beings, and this is why they deserve to be addressed together instead of apart."

On Asking Better Questions... And Finding Better Answers, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

On Asking Better Questions... And Finding Better Answers, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Asking better questions leads to better answers. A troublesome fact about the world Christian movement is that since the fourth century A.D., Christians have been divided on matters of war and peace. In fact, in the two World Wars of this century, more Christians were killed by Christians than had been killed in all the wars of the last two millennia combined. This is a troubling fact, to say the least, and a major contributor to the rejection of Christianity, from what I am told by non-Christians. So how did things come to be this way?"

"For This I Was Born..." Jesus, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

"For This I Was Born..." Jesus, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Throughout the year, but especially at Christmas, we celebrate the coming of Christ to the world God loves. Familiar carols ring out the festive theme- "Joy to the World! The Lord is come ... ." And seasonal memories invade our minds spontaneously. But have we considered recently why Jesus came, and thus the meaning of the event we celebrate?"

The Great Commission In Quadriphonic Sound, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1992

The Great Commission In Quadriphonic Sound, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

As we explore the similarities and differences between the four Gospels in the freshman Bible class I teach, just about every semester one of my students will ask, 'Why is the 'Great Commission' mentioned in all four Gospels?" Normally in the charts we use, when the same miracle or teaching is included in more than one Gospel, it appears in a list other than those containing material unique to a particular Gospel. But not so with the Great Commission. It occurs within each of the four Gospels-and yet in fascinating, different ways.
