A Semester Abroad Discussion Of The Film, Tatianna M. Rice Jan 2024

A Semester Abroad Discussion Of The Film, Tatianna M. Rice

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

What does a French and Digital Media Production double major do when they study abroad in Paris, France? Create a film, of course. A Semester Abroad follows my various travels during the Fall 2023 semester. In this discussion of my film, I break down the process from my initial research on French cinema, which focused on filmmakers during the French New Wave film movement of the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, to the process of creating this film. Inspired by the vignettes of Dreams directed by Akira Kurosawa, a film I first watched in my Global Cinema course, I created …

Character Rigging Explorations: Basic Skeleton To Full Simulated Muscle, Lindsay Diana Timbs

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This thesis project focuses on furthering my knowledge in creating rigs for an organic 3D model with realistic skin deformations. Rigs are the controls used to animate a model. A 3D model's skin deformation is how it squashes and stretches when moved. The project focuses on learning to use simulated muscles, which add the ability to imbue subtle secondary motion to the skin and deliver more realistic deformation as well as the creation of a smooth bind, a standard primary rigging technique. The aim is to compare and contrast their quality based on perceived realism. Subjectively, the muscle simulation was …

Descartes Meets Samkhya, Edgar James Vasquez Jan 2023

Descartes Meets Samkhya, Edgar James Vasquez

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

One of the great shortcomings of Cartesian mind-body dualism has been what is known as the Mind-Body Problem. Specifically, how does the mind (an immaterial substance) affect the body (a material substance) and vice versa. One of the first Indian philosophical traditions, Samkhya, provides a strict dualism as Descartes does, but does not encounter the mind-body Problem. Samkhya avoids the problem of mind-body interaction by drawing the dividing line differently than Descartes does. Instead of dividing the world into mental and physical, Samkhya divides the world into pure awareness (purusha) and everything else (prakriti). Which of course includes the mind …

Endless Waves: Japanese Creative Writing Project, Seth Nisley Jan 2023

Endless Waves: Japanese Creative Writing Project, Seth Nisley

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The goal of this project was to create a short story in Japanese for the purpose of improving my Japanese writing abilities, especially in areas such as natural character dialog, setting descriptions, pacing and other aspects of creative writing that are usually not covered in language classes. I outlined and drafted the short story first in English to establish a rough framework, then rewrote the story in Japanese with slight variations. I edited the text twice myself and subsequently edited it with a native speaker to ensure a natural tone. Throughout the final editing process, the initial goal of editing …

How To Vocally Train Transgender Singers: A Thorough Literature Review, Sydney A. Timmer Jan 2022

How To Vocally Train Transgender Singers: A Thorough Literature Review, Sydney A. Timmer

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The knowledge of training transgender voices is just beginning to make its way into mainstream music education. However, there needs to be more known and a curriculum in place to address this critical topic. Transgender students face many unique challenges in the voice studio, and educators must have the knowledge to teach these students. There are several elements to consider when training transgender students. These elements include the anatomical changes of masculinizing hormones on the body and voice, the anatomical changes of feminizing hormones on the body and voice, vocal exercises for both transfeminine and transmasculine students, how to choose …

Being-In-Love: Kierkegaard And Existential Love, John Milkovich Jan 2022

Being-In-Love: Kierkegaard And Existential Love, John Milkovich

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this essay, I argue for an adaptation of Plato and Kierkegaard’s conceptions of love based on a style of analysis I call “existential analysis.” The existential analysis requires our conceptions of things to exclude any reference to view-from-nowhere concepts. Plato and Kierkegaard both make use of view-from-nowhere concepts in their theories of love. I argue that specific features of each of these theories–namely the pursuit for infinite beauty, the Absolute Paradox, and the other-self–can be removed from their respective view-from-nowhere concepts and reinterpreted to serve as a possible foundation for a future conception of love generally understood. Although Plato …

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the author's beliefs, attitudes, and emotions related to performing a recital during a pandemic. This study focuses on the phenomenon of emotion around a senior recital which is a pivotal moment in a student's experiences. Data were collected from journal entries. These data were analyzed to answer the research question, "what are my feelings about the process of planning a recital given a pandemic?" This arts-based, heuristic inquiry utilized reflective writing, dance, and collage as iterative cycles. Three key themes emerged: falling short of expectations, the inability to accept acknowledgement, and navigating …

Contested Civic Space: The Piazza Della Signoria In Medicean Florence, Joanne Wisely

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The heart of civic life in Renaissance Florence was an open square called the Piazza della Signoria. The piazza was the site of debates, executions, and power struggles, making it the most contested space in the city. Florentines held tremendous pride in their republic and often commissioned sculptural works to represent their civic values, displaying them publicly in the piazza. This research examines the shifting messages of sculptural works in the Piazza della Signoria during three distinct periods: from the piazza's creation in 1300 until 1494; from the expulsion of the Medici in 1494 until their return in 1512; and …

The Latinx community is rapidly growing in the United States, and it is important for young readers to find books with characters who are members of this community . However, there are many stereotypes that exist about this group in society, some negative and some positive . Phoenician Funerary Masks And Pendant/Head Beads: A Feature Analysis And Catalogue, Alexandria Miller Jan 2020

Phoenician Funerary Masks And Pendant/Head Beads: A Feature Analysis And Catalogue, Alexandria Miller

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this thesis, I examine 31 artifacts within the frame of an in-the-works catalogue that aims to eventually provide an in-depth survey of funerary masks and beads found at Levantine sites, particularly in/at/from Phoenician contexts. The basic catalogue system is outlined, which works to compile known Phoenician masks and head beads that, along with other related objects in the future, could be organized into a single diverse collection. These artifacts are then further broken down by a feature analysis looking to identify and record potential patterns and common stylistic traits among them. The facial feature analysis includes and records the …

Imagining Queer Futures To Ensure Queer Survival, Leah A. Minadeo Jan 2019

Imagining Queer Futures To Ensure Queer Survival, Leah A. Minadeo

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

For Lee Edelman. queen' lack of future is a, extension or the dominant social narrative that, thanks to reproductive futurism, reduces queerness to same-sex object-choice. That narrative renders queers strictly non-reproductive and children only accomplishable through the consummation of heterosexual pairings. Since queers cannot contribute life to the future in the form of children, queerness and queer life become aligned instead with death. This is a complex narrative that figures children as the stuff the future is made of and queer as a threat to both children and the symbolic Child. The stakes of this language is high because such …

Women Rising: The American Revolution And Evangelical Thought, Roxanne Reinhardt

This project explores the events leading up to the American Revolution such as the Great Awakening and the Seven Years War through the works of Hannah Heaton and Esther Edwards Burr's diaries, as well as Sarah Osborn's writing. Thus, by looking at the religious views of women during this time, this paper explains the trend of revivalist and evangelical uprisings and the religious break from authority for marginalized members of society. This paper argues that female evangelicals found religion and prayer an active way to participate and promote themselves in the American Revolution.
