Framed within the context of the explosive growth of nineteenth century Paris, this article examines the post-revolutionary revival of charity through the activity of Jean-Baptiste Etienne, C.M. (1801-1874), fourteenth superior general of the Congregation of the Mission and the Company of the Daughters of Charity.

Setting the context for the emergence of the charitable work of St. Vincent de Paul (1580-1660) and St. Louise de Marillac (1591-1660) and the groups they founded, this article examines the urgent societal and religious challenges posed by a vast increase in poverty in France during the seventeenth century.
