The Early Success And Gradual Decline Of Lutheranism In England, 1520-1600, Basil Hall Oct 1967

The Early Success And Gradual Decline Of Lutheranism In England, 1520-1600, Basil Hall

Concordia Theological Monthly

This calendar was an unofficial enterprise intended to oppose the names of "Protestant saints" to those of "Popish saints" in the traditional calendars in Elizabethan use, and it cannot be taken to mean that a deep or ready sympathy existed for Lutheran doctrine and religious practices at that time. In fact it would be difficult to find an Elizabethan writer approving of Lutheran teachings and methods of worship and advocating them apart from those subjects which had become common to Protestantism, including justification by faith.

Psalms 2 And 110: A Comparison Of Exegetical Methods, Herbert Hohenstein Jun 1967

Psalms 2 And 110: A Comparison Of Exegetical Methods, Herbert Hohenstein

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This investigation is prompted first of all by the controversy within the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod concerning the use of historical criticism as a legitimate method of interpreting the Bible. But it is also important to ascertain whether the method is strictly a classroom discipline or if the procedure has tangible benefits for the work of the Christian minister. If the method does assist one in understanding the theological message of the Biblical words, then its potential value for the parish pastor in his varied ministries is heightened.

The purpose of this investigation, therefore, is to determine if historical criticism contributes …

The Hymnals Of The Lutheran Church --Missouri Synod, James Brauer May 1967

The Hymnals Of The Lutheran Church --Missouri Synod, James Brauer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

At the suggestion, then, of Dr. Walter E. Buszin this task was undertaken: to write a history of the hymnals used by The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. Such a study would be helpful in understanding the selection of hymns in the present hymnal, The Lutheran Hymnal. It would also provide answers to questions like ''Who prepared these hymnals?," "When were they prepared? “In what way were they compiled and edited?” and “What influences do they reflect?”

The scope of this study, then, is the hymns in the Missouri Synod hymnals. It encompasses the needs that. brought them into being, the people …

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert Conrad May 1967

Principles For The Development Of Adult Premembership Instruction, Robert Conrad

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The responsibility of preparing interested persons for membership in the congregation is a task that faces every parish pastor. In carrying out that responsibility, he needs to make decisions as to what his goals for such instruction shall be and how those goals shall be attained. There is nothing in writing in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod that will help a pastor think through what the goals of the premembership process should be and what is the best way of attaining those goals. There are manuals available for the instruction of adults but there are no studies which investigate the underlying …

The Liberation Of The Creature: A Study Of The Interpretation Of Romans 8:19-22 By Representative Lutheran Theologians, Nestor Beck

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present "study of the interpretation of Romans 8:19-22" prompted by the following reasons. First, the passage is somewhat of a puzzle to the unprepared reader of the epistle to the Romans. Second, the passage has been quoted to enhance the struggle for a better world. The question arises whether such a use of the passage is legitimate. Third, the passage has become in Lutheran theological tradition the centre of the controversy on the "destruction or renewal" of the present. The need world. arises to verify whether the passage actually teaches the renovation of the world and whether it stands …

Characteristics Of Southeast Asian Islam As Factors In A Theology Of The Christian Mission To Philippine Muslims, Robert Mcamis May 1967

Characteristics Of Southeast Asian Islam As Factors In A Theology Of The Christian Mission To Philippine Muslims, Robert Mcamis

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The Christian mission to Islam offers one of the greatest challenges which the Christian Church has ever faced. In 1962 the Lutheran Church in the Philippines, in spite of its limited manpower and resources, accepted the challenge of the Christian mission to Philippine Islam. At the initial stage of this mission it is well to analyze the problem in detail. This demands a thorough understanding of Philippine Islam. The objective of this study is a clear picture of the Muslim situation in the Philippines together with implications for the Christian mission to Philippine Islam.

The Church's Approach To The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents Through An Institutional Setting, Leonard Laetsch May 1967

The Church's Approach To The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents Through An Institutional Setting, Leonard Laetsch

Bachelor of Divinity

Christian concern for one's fellow man finds its roots in the example for all Christian living, in Christ Himself. As He was vitally concerned about the welfare of His contemporaries, so Christians through-out the ages have tried to reflect a similar concern for their contemporaries. Christians desire that all men come to a knowledge of Christ Jesus as the Savior and Redeemer of the world, Who brings a new way of life both in this world and in the world to come. Whenever a follower of Christ sees acts of delinquency, he becomes concerned because he recognizes them as results …

Worship: The Divine Alchemy, Thomas Coates Mar 1967

Worship: The Divine Alchemy, Thomas Coates

Concordia Theological Monthly

In medieval lore, scientists sought to use the process of alchemy to transmute base metals into gold. Alchemy proved to be a pseudoscience, for men have devised no method to create the precious metal out of elements that are common and coarse. But in a higher sense, and in the spiritual realm, God achieves that which to man is impossible: He takes these base, ignoble elements, these earthen vessels - our stumbling words, our faltering prayers, our paltry gifts, our flawed works, our frail and sin-scarred lives - and transmutes them into gold, into offerings fit for the King.

Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr Feb 1967

Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod instructed the Commission on Theology and Church Relations to "conduct a comprehensive study of Biblical hermeneutics" (1965 Proceedings, Res. 2-07, page 95), it did not thereby declare a moratorium on Biblical study and scholarship throughout the Synod. On the contrary, the church's scholars, wherever their calling finds them, as well as all other members of the church, are expected to continue their daily searching of the Scriptures as vigorously as ever. The special study assigned to the Commission on Theology and Church Relations is simply a part of and, hopefully, a useful contribution to the …
