Pleroma And Christology, Harold A. Merklinger
Pleroma And Christology, Harold A. Merklinger
Concordia Theological Monthly
Theologically, πλήϱωμα is among St. Paul's basic concepts. This is particularly true in his epistles to the Ephesians and to the Colossians. In them he uses the term freighted with Christological content.

The Relationship Between Dogmatics And Ethics In The Thought Of Elert, Barth, And Troeltsch, Edward H. Schroeder
The Relationship Between Dogmatics And Ethics In The Thought Of Elert, Barth, And Troeltsch, Edward H. Schroeder
Concordia Theological Monthly
A concern for dogmatics and a concern for ethics do not always go together. The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, for example, has always had a strong dogmatic tradition, but has in general been uninterested in what is commonly called ethics. But this is the opposite of the situation in many other American denominations. To put the problem into a broader perspective, what is the relationship between dogmatics and ethics? A helpful approach is to study the distinctive answers given by Werner Elert, Karl Barth, and Ernst Troeltsch, which prove to be distinctive not only because their personal theological convictions …
John The Baptizer, Is He Elijah Who Is To Come?, Floyd Schoenhals
John The Baptizer, Is He Elijah Who Is To Come?, Floyd Schoenhals
Master of Divinity Thesis
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Synoptic Gospels to answer the question, Is John the Baptizer Elijah Who is to Come? In doing this, it is necessary, first of all, to see how Elijah is presented in the Old Testament and in Rabbinic Judaism. After this, there will be an investigation of the Synoptic materials which pertain to this question. These materials have arbitrarily been divided up into three major groupings.1. Material supplied by Mark and reused for the most part by Matthew and Luke. 2. Pertinent 'Q' material.3. Material peculiar to Luke.
The purpose of this …
Grief And The Pastor, Galen Drawbaugh
Grief And The Pastor, Galen Drawbaugh
Master of Divinity Thesis
In the pages that follow, Part I will give consideration to the emotion of grief and how it works itself out in the course of time. This is basic. The pastor must understand grief and "grief-work" before he can begin to adequately counsel the bereaved. Part II will look at the condition of abnormal grief. Here the purpose will be to recognize situations in which the pastor will wisely refer patients to those who are more professionally trained to counsel them. Part III will then consider the pastor's role as he seeks to counsel the bereaved in his congregation.
Is Christ The Son In The Parable Of The Wicked Husbandmen, Stephen Carter
Is Christ The Son In The Parable Of The Wicked Husbandmen, Stephen Carter
Master of Divinity Thesis
Is Christ the son in the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen? The Church would consider this question a valid one during any period of her history, because she has always associated the interpretation of parables with the content of her faith. But a question of this nature demands more careful consideration in the age of Biblical criticism, because it must be considered from several viewpoints. One hundred and fifty years ago, our question could have been viewed from this perspective: Did Jesus refer to Himself as the son in the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen as it is recorded in …
The Status Of Societal Religion In The United States, Martin E. Marty
The Status Of Societal Religion In The United States, Martin E. Marty
Concordia Theological Monthly
In recent years citizens of the United States have been experiencing a new version of an old debate. This debate concerns itself with the question: Does or should a nation, a culture, or a society have a single integrating and supporting societal religion? What is the relation of a particular theology to such a common faith or religious consensus in our society and in our nation? The parties which are participating in this widespread and profound debate are many; we can identify some of them.

The Ethics Of Nuclear Warfare, Martin H. Scharlemann
The Ethics Of Nuclear Warfare, Martin H. Scharlemann
Concordia Theological Monthly
At the beginning of this atomic age Einstein once remarked, "The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything except our ways of thinking. Thus, we are drifting toward a catastrophe beyond comparison. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive." Fission, fusion, radar, television, automation, miniaturization, jets, rockets, satellites - all of these discoveries and inventions have come tumbling out toward us with such speed that we have not had the time fully to digest the significance of this rapid pace and to reflect on its consequences. During the few years of our …
Theology And Moden Literature-Survey, Donald L. Deffner
Theology And Moden Literature-Survey, Donald L. Deffner
Concordia Theological Monthly
In Randall Stewart's American Literature and Christian Doctrine, the author unabashedly abandons "the so-highly-prized, the so-strenuously-inculcated academic neutrality" (p. viii) and pleads for a creatively critical evaluation of modern literature by Christian theologians. According to Stewart, the Christian critic must charge contemporary literature "to give an answer for the faith" that is in it. In the same spirit, John Killinger insists he must "ask hard questions of the creative arts… that the critic [the theologian] must judge, or it has nothing at all to say." (Sec John Killinger, The Failure of Theology in Modem Literature, pp. 15, 16)

The Pharisees In The Religious Scene, Eric Clemens Mackenzie
The Pharisees In The Religious Scene, Eric Clemens Mackenzie
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is to clarify some of the issues; to portray Pharisaism as it really was; and to determine its place in the religious scene. The subject will be considered with respect to the rise of Pharisaiam, its theology, and its influence upon and place in human relations. One premise is accepted from the outset; Pharisaism was essentially a religious movement.
Evolutionary Theology Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin, His Critiics And A Personal Evaluation, Robert Letalien
Evolutionary Theology Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin, His Critiics And A Personal Evaluation, Robert Letalien
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper will be an attempt to evaluate the lifegoal of Teilhard, namely, his reconciliation of the theory of evolution with the Christian faith. The emphasis will be placed upon his hopes for the future of man in the light of his philosophy. The future of man he labels as the “Omega point." To see how this point is reached it will be necessary to briefly describe how Teilhard views the evolutionary process from the inception of matter until the fulfillment of all things at the Omega point.
The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg
The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper is written by one who is a member of the Church catholic, by one who is a Lutheran, and by one who does not necessarily make statement of dogmatic truth the exclusive property of men within the Lutheran tradition. This is said to disparage the Lutheran heritage not at all, but to indicate that one can at least be open to different systematic formulations. The point is also made to indicate to the reader that the student was conscious of his own heritage, but that at the same time both during the research and during the writing of …
The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt
The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt
Bachelor of Divinity
In the past few years theology has experienced a renewal in the area of hermeneutics. This renaissance includes more than a stimulating interest in the principles of interpretation, a periodic revival similar to those that have come and gone in other theological fields. Hermeneutics has broken the boundaries in which it has been confined since the age of orthodoxy and assumed totally new proportions, even to the extent of becoming the focal point of theology for some theologians. To trace some of the philosophical influences behind and in this movement is the proposed task of this paper.

We are not thinking of the unprinted memorials but have in mind those resolutions which, even though never expressed in specific convention actions, were nevertheless implicit in the resolutions adopted by the delegates at the 1965 convention of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Living Toward One Another With The Word Of God, Harry G. Coiner

Many forces are at work in our society today which combine to make personal interest an abiding motivation. The pleasing art of being social has assumed the doubtful coloration of the slick professional impersonality. People seem to become "involved" with people only "in a role" and not in a personal and meaningful way, not so their "heart feels it;” as we say. The drive for individualism is bred into us from our American heritage, and we have become a breed of people skilled in the devices of keeping away from people while living with them and working with them and …

This issue is the second in the Biblical Studies series, a series first suggested by the Commission on Church Literature and subsequently endorsed by the general leadership of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. This issue is a contribution toward a fuller understanding of the nature of the Word of God. All the articles contribute to this thematic study. One's appreciation of God's written Word can be so controlled by specific problems, like the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch, that the full grandeur of this book can disappear behind a carefully built fence of minor concerns. The contributors to this …

Christ’S Use Of The Old Testament With Special Reference To The Pentateuch, Victor A. Bartling
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the preparation of this essay I was determined to let the Gospels give us the answer to Part I concerning our Lord's attitude toward the Old Testament. It seems to me that there is much that we can gain for our own guidance and inspiration from such a study. Part II deals with the question of the authorship of the Pentateuch. It is appended in the hope that it will help to put current discussions on the Mosaic authorship of the first five books of the Bible into a Biblical frame of reference.

Though the Greek word έϱμηνεύειν has three main shadings (to state, to expound, and to translate) , the basic idea underlying all three meanings is "to mediate understanding."

What Does "Inerrancy" Mean?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
This paper is primarily a terminological study rather than a theological one. It inquires into the meaning of, rather than into the justification for, a term that has become a staple of dogmatic discussion in our own and other denominations.
