The Arrival Of The Saxons In St. Louis, W. G. Polack
The Arrival Of The Saxons In St. Louis, W. G. Polack
Concordia Theological Monthly
After relating something of the efforts made to establish Stephan's authority over the entire Saxon group, he declares that Stephan was again making his nightly "Spaziergaenge" with his friends but that he did not take part, because he considered it an unseemly practise, and, besides, he was too tired, after teaching school all day, to devote the nights, meant for rest, to running around.

To evangelize the world was the Great Commission which Jesus gave to His disciples when He took leave of them to return to His Father. To evangelize the world is still the great responsibility of the Church today. The apostles preached first in Jerusalem and Judea but then went down to Samaria and from thence to the great Greco-Roman world beyond. Home Missions, or the evangelization of the unchurched in our community, is our first obligation; but while doing this, we dare not neglect the "Samarias" and the partes infidelium beyond. We have done reasonably well in preaching the Gospel …

The reaction of the U. L. C. A. commissioners to this statement Is the following: "Our commission was unable to accept the statement of the Missouri Synod that the Scriptures are the infallible truth 'also in those parts which treat of historical, geographical, and other secular matters.' We find the words quoted not in accordance with our Lutheran Confessions (see Formula of Concord, Epitome, Introd.) nor with the Scriptures themselves.''

A second reason why a certain class of theologians charges Luther with teaching predestinarianism in De Servo Arbitrio is because he so emphatically and uncompromisingly teaches the monergism of grace. What these theologians-the synergists mislike more than the "harsh, predestinarian" sayings of Luther is the sola gratia back of them. Because they do not like the sola gratia, they mislike Luther's teaching on election.

The Lure Of Biblical And Christian Archeology, P. E. Kretzmann
The Lure Of Biblical And Christian Archeology, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
A few yean ago Prof. Ralph Van Deman Magoffin. then president of the Archeological Institute of America, wrote a fascinating, little book, to which he gave the title The Lure and Lore of Archeology. About one third of his discussion in this book concerns itself with the first part of his subject, while the remaining, two thirds of the book speak of the history and the science of archeology. The presentation is not technical, and therefore even the layman in the field will be able to follow the author without difficulty. Moreover, it is surprising to learn that the writer …

People are saying that De Servo Arbitrio is a dangerous book. We have heard them rail against it, first, because of Luther's teaching on the diacretio personarum, and, secondly, because of his statements concerning the Deus Absconditus. Usually the warning against De Servo Arbitrio takes this third form: It teaches Calviniatic determinism. If this charge is well founded, our book could not serve as a handbook for a course in Lutheran theology. It is therefore necessary to examine this sinister charge at some length.

The study of the humanities, as included in the course of study at our junior colleges, will do much toward establishing and developing an appreciation of the best products of the human mind through the centuries. The students are now being introduced to the masterpieces of ancient and modern literature, to the drama of the Greeks and Romans as well as that of modern times, to music from primitive times to our own day, to history from the standpoint of economics and the social relationships, to the effect of scientific research in our daily lives, and specifically in the fine …
Erasmus On Luther, Wm. Dallmann
Erasmus On Luther, Wm. Dallmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Luther's opposition to the Church of Rome was welcomed by many leaders in Church and State who had long chafed under the yoke of Popery. One of these leaders was the renowned Humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam. Yet Erasmus, like so many others, had not grasped the fundamental principles of Luther's Reformation. In the articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae, that of justification by grace, through faith, without works, Erasmus remained a good Romanist. For many years he refused to take up his pen against Luther in spite of urgent requests and demands on the part of Rome. Finally he yielded.

What Was Written On The Two Tables Of The Covenant?, Th. Laetsch

In the year 1773 Goethe published a small pamphlet entitled Was stund auf den T.feln, des Bundes? After referring briefly to the establishment of the covenant narrated Ex. 24:1 ff., he continues: ''Then the Lord said unto Moses, Come up unto Me into the mount and be there; and I will give thee tables of stone and a law and commandments which I have written. Moses ascends to the Lord and is given the specifications for the Tabernacle. Finally we are told, And when the Lord had made an end of communing with him, He gave him the tables. What …

Mastering The Technique Of Sermon Building, E. J. Friedrich
Concordia Theological Monthly
Strange as it may seem, the fact remains that the rank and file of preachers take little or no interest in the technique of sermon building. In fact there seems to be a wide-spread revolt, even in conservative churches like ours, against many of the time-honored homiletical principles by which preachers of former generations were guided in the composition of their sermons. Here and there ministers who claim to have learned much by experience even go so far as to tell their younger brethren: Study homiletics as long as you are at the seminary but forget all about it as …

That Review Of Pastor Goerss's Book In The "Lutheran", Martin Sommer
Concordia Theological Monthly
On page 18 of the Lutheran of March 16 we find a review of Pastor Daniel F. Goerss's book of sermons ''In the Upper Room.” The reviewer, Rev. Carroll J. Rockey, while bestowing some praise upon these sermons, takes issue with Rev. Goerss on a number of statements. A few of these he classifies as minor points. We shall not enter upon a discussion of them; they are comparatively insignificant.
Erasmus On Luther, Wm. Dallmann
Erasmus On Luther, Wm. Dallmann

Erasmus, like Luther, was an Augustinian; like Luther, a priest; like Luther, a preacher-at Paris; like Luther, a Doctor of Theology-of Turin; like Luther, a teacher-at Cambridge 1511-1514.
Andreas Carlstadt declared Erasmus "the prince of theologians," superior to St. Ambrose and St. Augustine.
I do not see among the old theologians any they can legitimately prefer to you," wrote Bude.
