Techniques In Modern Preaching (Toward Communicating The Gospel), Vernon Boriack Dec 1954

Techniques In Modern Preaching (Toward Communicating The Gospel), Vernon Boriack

Concordia Theological Monthly

All of us have been preaching the crucial doctrines of sin and grace Sunday after Sunday, year after year, but have we really been "communicating" these cardinal doctrines which are the Christian faith? "To communicate" means "to impart, convey, share, make it so that we hold in oneness" truths with others. Have we been achieving this end? Or while our preaching has been strictly orthodox in content, have we perhaps been employing words and phrases and thought forms which ricochet off the minds of our people like petty rifle bullets off a Patton rank? Have the minds of our people …

The Schism Of The Eastern And The Western Churches, Lewis W. Spitz Dec 1954

The Schism Of The Eastern And The Western Churches, Lewis W. Spitz

Concordia Theological Monthly

For a thousand years the church was regarded as a unit in spite of various sects and occasional violent disagreements among prominent churchmen. Nine hundred years ago it broke into a Greek and a Roman segment. Repeated efforts have been made to heal the breach, but only with passing success. It took a millennium to effect the schism; there is at present no indication that the two segments will ever reunite. The year 1054 has been accepted as the date of the schism. This date, however, merely serves the convenience of the historian. It is a handy road marker along …

The Relationship Of The Church To The National Culture In America, Ernest B. Koenker Nov 1954

The Relationship Of The Church To The National Culture In America, Ernest B. Koenker

Concordia Theological Monthly

As one considers the cultural complex of America today, there are a number of questions which might present themselves to the Christian living under the Word. What are the values which underlie our national culture, and is there any sense in which these are being absolutized today in some kind of Messianism? Can one say that the Christian churches in America, or the Lutheran Church, have profoundly shaped our culture, or have the churches themselves been thoroughly shaped by the culture? In view of the loss or muffling of a dynamic Christian witness in many of the American denominations, what …

The German Hymn In English Translation, Walter G. Tillmanns Nov 1954

The German Hymn In English Translation, Walter G. Tillmanns

Concordia Theological Monthly

The German hymn is one of the most precious treasures of the Lutheran Church. Ever since 1523, when Martin Luther and his co-workers began to write "German Psalms" for the congregation, the hymn and spiritual song has taken its place in the congregational life; next to the preaching of the Word and the teaching of the Catechism, there is nothing so dear to the Lutheran as the rich heritage of the "singing church."

Review Of "Bad Boll" Conferences, Paul M. Bretscher Nov 1954

Review Of "Bad Boll" Conferences, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Building Theological Bridges" is the appropriate subtitle of the sainted Professor Fred. E. Mayer's The Story of Bad Boll. In this booklet, which is a lasting memorial to Dr. Mayer's synthetic and sympathetic mind, the author summarized the three theological conferences conducted by our Synod at Bad Boll, Wűrttemberg, Germany, in the summer of 1948. The readiness of officials of our Synod to "build theological bridges" connecting our Church with European Lutheran Churches was so favorably received by the participants in the first Bad Boll venture that in the opinion of our officials these conferences needed to be continued.

From A Child Thou Hast Known The Holy Scriptures, Arthur F. Katt Oct 1954

From A Child Thou Hast Known The Holy Scriptures, Arthur F. Katt

Concordia Theological Monthly

"From a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus," St. Paul wrote to Timothy, thereby commending the knowledge of Scripture from childhood. In order to know the Holy Scriptures from childhood, children must have the Scriptures presented to them in such a way that they are able to understand them. Knowledge is based on understanding.

Factors In Lutheran Unity, E. George Pearce Oct 1954

Factors In Lutheran Unity, E. George Pearce

Concordia Theological Monthly

Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem in the fourth century, advised his people that when they attended a divine service in a strange city, they ought not merely to enquire for the church or for the lord's house, because Marcionists and Manicheans and all manner of sects professed to be the Church and called their meeting places the House of the Lord; but they ought to ask: Where is the Catholic Church? The name "Catholic," used in all the early creeds and in the writings of the Fathers, came into use first to distinguish the universal Christian Church from the national Jewish …

The managing editor of the Concordia Theological Monthly has been taken to the home above where there is rest for God's children and editorial drudgery is unknown. Exigencies of space will not permit that we insert more than a few biographical data; for fuller accounts the readers are referred to the biweekly popular papers of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the Lutheraner and the Lutheran Witness.

Saint Boniface, Lewis W. Spitz Sep 1954

Saint Boniface, Lewis W. Spitz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Twelve centuries have passed since St. Boniface on June 5, 754, died as a martyr on the banks of the Borne at Dokkum, in Friesland. Much is being made of the anniversary of his death. Roman Catholics have organized pilgrimages both to Dokkum, the place of his death, and to Fulda, where his body now rests. Protestants, too, have honored his memory with special services. Many thousands of both Roman Catholic and Protestant Christians have thus paid their respects to a great man of God and to their common Christian heritage.

The Relationship Between The Church's Program For Ministerial Training And Her Mission Program, W. C. Birkner Sep 1954

The Relationship Between The Church's Program For Ministerial Training And Her Mission Program, W. C. Birkner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The formulation of the theme to which I am to address myself indicates that our Church has become aware that the relationship of two vital parts of her program, namely, Missions and Ministerial Training, deserves some attention and a closer scrutiny at this time. The fact that occasionally the expressions "problem," or "dilemma," or "difficulty," or even "rivalry" are heard when the relationship of these two areas of activity is under discussion, is in itself an admission that this question has not always been clearly defined and a confession that not all members of the Church have arrived at the …

Preaching From The Greek New Testament, Eric C. Malte Sep 1954

Preaching From The Greek New Testament, Eric C. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some four hundred and fifty years ago, in his Preface to his Greek Testament, which became the standard for three hundred years in spite of the haste and imperfections connected with it, Erasmus expressed his delight as follows: "These holy pages will summon up the living image of Christ's mind. They will give you Christ Himself, talking, healing, dying, rising - the whole Christ, in a word. They will give Him to you in an intimacy so close that He would be less visible to you if He stood before your eyes."

The Modern Parent And The Teaching Church, Arthur C. Piepkorn Aug 1954

The Modern Parent And The Teaching Church, Arthur C. Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

"It is a gloomy moment in history. Not for many years, not in fact in the lifetime of most men who are here, has there been so much grave and deep apprehension; never has the future seemed so incalculable as at this time. In France, the political cauldron seethes and bubbles with uncertainty; Russia hangs, as usual, a cloud, dark and silent, upon the horizon of Europe; while all the energies, resources, and the influences of the British Empire are sorely tried and are yet to be tried more sorely. It is a solemn moment, and no man can feel …
