The main purpose of this paper, however, is to attempt to answer the third question listed above; it is hoped that in the process of the discussion solutions to some of the other difficulties will also suggest themselves. Concentrating on the Markan account, we will proceed first by discussing various answers that have been suggested to the question: what was the original purpose of the story?
