First Body(Ies): Photographs Of Csb/Sju Made From Egg, Clay And Ash, Scott K. Murphy, Sienna Kuhn
Forum Lectures
Photographs can be made from ash, clay, egg and tree sap. Artists in the 19th century figured out how to do some of this. Over the past year, post-bac resident artist Sienna Kuhn and I figured out the rest. Photography does not need to be an industrially mediated procedure. You do not always need to buy pre-made materials or send your digital files off to a printing service to have pictures. In conjunction with an exhibition on the process in Clemens Library, we describe some of the ways in which 19th century ingenuity, contemporary experimentation, and 21st technology can produce …

The Development Of The Epiclesis: Alexandrian Or Syrian?, Nathan Peter Chase
The Development Of The Epiclesis: Alexandrian Or Syrian?, Nathan Peter Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper explores the origins and development of the epiclesis in Eucharistic prayers. It begins by looking at the pneumatological developments around the time of the First Council of Nicaea and the First Council of Constantinople in the 4th century. It then turns to the work of influential scholars in the field to try and present a status quaestionis on the epiclesis which seeks to answer the questions: 1) How did it develop?, 2) Where did it develop?, and 3) Why did it develop? The paper ends by affirming the uncertainty of scholarship on the answers to these questions, while …
A History And Analysis Of The Missel Romain Pour Les Diocese Du Zaire, Nathan Peter Chase
A History And Analysis Of The Missel Romain Pour Les Diocese Du Zaire, Nathan Peter Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper is an in-depth study of the Zaire Rite, which was developed after the Second Vatican Council in response to the call for greater inculturation. It explores the context in Rome, Africa, and the Congo that allowed such a radical revision of the Roman Rite to be approved. This paper looks at the structural changes that were made and the reasons for those changes while also exploring the differences in celebration between the Zaire Rite and the Roman Rite. The paper concludes with the implications of this rite for the Roman Rite and the Church today.
Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright
Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Practitioners of Aikido advance the claim, peculiar to many, that martial training can support moral action. This essay examines the claim by exploring communicative structures implicit in the response to attack made possible by this art's techniques. This exploration reveals three dimensions of intersubjectivity embedded in the practice of Aikido, dimensions that explicate the ethical imperative of the art.

A Cognitive Approach To Teaching Strategies, Emily Esch
A Cognitive Approach To Teaching Strategies, Emily Esch
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Our knowledge of how the mind works is growing rapidly. One area of particular interest to philosophy teachers is research on reasoning and decision making processes. I explore one model of human cognition that offers new ways of thinking about how to teach philosophical skills. The bulk of the paper is dedicated to exposition of the model and the evidence that supports it; at the end of the paper, I suggest ways these findings might be incorporated into the classroom.
Toward A Theology Of Infertility And The Role Of Donum Vitae, Kathryn Lilla Cox
Toward A Theology Of Infertility And The Role Of Donum Vitae, Kathryn Lilla Cox
School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications
A theology of infertility is needed to help couples and the broader ecclesial community understand the theological implications of infertility. Infertility raises questions about human freedom, finitude, embodiment, childlessness, and parenthood. In this article, dominant cultural assumptions surrounding each of these areas when considering reproductive technologies are sketched. Official Roman Catholic teaching on reproductive technologies (Donum Vitae), while rejecting most forms of such technologies, does provide a viable response to the presupposition that reproductive technologies resolve infertility. Given the dominant cultural assumptions and insights from Roman Catholic teaching, this article advocates for several ecclesial changes when considering infertility. …
