Rethinking Ruddick And The Ethnocentrism Critique Of Maternal Thinking, Jean Keller

In the early 1990s, Sara Ruddick's Maternal Thinking was criticized for harboring a latent ethnocentrism. Ruddick responded to these critiques in the 1995 edition of her book, but her response has not yet been addressed in the feminist philosophical literature. This essay addresses this lacuna in the scholarship on Ruddick. In the last installment of this critique, Alison Bailey and Patrice DiQuinzio suggested that the only way for Ruddick to avoid the ethnocentrism charge would require her near-universalistic claims about mothering to be rejected in favor of 'particularized, localized accounts of mothering.' The Political Personality Of U.S. President Barack Obama, Aubrey Immelman

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of U.S. president Barack Obama, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Information concerning Obama was collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Obama’s primary personality patterns were found to be Ambitious/confident …

Mary is pursuing a Masters of Arts degree with a concentration in Scripture. She has a rich history having spent two years in the novitiate of the Cistercian sisters of Our Lady of the Mississippi in Dubuque, Iowa and having practiced as a nurse for over fourteen years. In 2004, while working as a nurse, Mary became involved in prison ministry. What began as service has become a passion for her. She wishes to pursue chaplaincy following her study of theology.

Sister Mary is a religious sister of the Saver of Souls order from Ningbo, China. In pursuit of a pastoral ministry degree, she studied the prophet Jeremiah and recognized in him, a role model for her future work in China. Sister Mary describes a vision of the Holy Spirit visiting thirteen million Chinese in order to bring about conversion, and she would like to work in support of those who choose to renew their relationship with God.

Julia is a Mennonite-Catholic working toward a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in systematics. Julia was raised as a Mennonite and spent her life traveling including spending three years in Jamaica while her parents worked with the Mennonite Central Committee and a year in Haiti where Julia herself spent time working for the same service organization. Something Old, Something New: In Search Of The New Monasticism, Julian Collette

Julian Collette is a student of monastic studies and pastoral ministry. He has lived in various intentional communities such as New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California, and an Ecovillage and Zen Buddhist Meditation Center in Massachusetts. In June 2011, as part of his academic program at Saint John’s Theology•Seminary, Julian will embark on a 14 month bicycle tour of the United Stated, visiting various intentional communities including those identified with the New Monasticism movement. Previous to his work at Boston College, he received a Master of Arts in Theology at Saint John’s School of Theology•Seminary with a concentration in systematic theology. Making The Boys Cry: The Performative Dimensions Of Fluid Gender, Shane Miller

This essay examines how young girls who participate in combat sports such as wrestling, a traditionally male stronghold, perform continually shifting gender identities that interweave physical traits and behaviors typically coded as masculine or feminine. Drawing upon auto-ethnographic and ethnographic methodologies, I demonstrate how a study of actual lived body experience grounded in a fluid conception of gender is able to remain sensitive to the unique performative gender work being done while providing a critical interrogation of the moments in which the performance of gender is inscribed as nonconformative.
