Reading From The Periphery: Ricardo Piglia And The Liberal Arts, Roy Ketchum

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

"At colleges and universities in the United States, the liberal arts are seen as a worthy complement to focused learning in a discipline. A discipline is expected to offer specialization in preparation for further study, for careers and for professions. The liberal arts are charged with providing a broad intellectual background. The liberal arts can also serve as an entry point, a first exposure, to the range of disciplines. This is a special relationship promising balance between depth and breadth. Many of the arguments put forth in favor of a strong liberal arts education also emphasize the practical value of …

El Militarismo En La Granada De Rodolfo Walsh, Eleonora Bertranou Jul 2011

El Militarismo En La Granada De Rodolfo Walsh, Eleonora Bertranou

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

Philosophy, Science, And Belles-Lettres In Syriac And Christian Arabic Literature: A Gentle Introduction And Survey, Adam C. Mccollum Apr 2011

Philosophy, Science, And Belles-Lettres In Syriac And Christian Arabic Literature: A Gentle Introduction And Survey, Adam C. Mccollum

HMML Lectures

It might be assumed that the genres of Syriac and Christian Arabic literature are made up exclusively (or almost so) of sacred topics (Bible, commentary, liturgy, asceticism, hagiography, theology, etc.), the writers, scribes, and readers in these communities often being monks, presbyters, deacons, and bishops. A broad look at the surviving evidence of this literature, however, shows an immense interest in subjects not directly connected to the church, monastery, or Christian life at all, among them philosophy, science, and belles-lettres. This paper offers a basic overview of these subjects as Syriac and Christian Arabic authors dealt with them, especially from …

The Case For The Defense, Scott Richardson Apr 2011

The Case For The Defense, Scott Richardson

John Vlahos's bold and confident assertion that Penelope recognizes Odysseus well before book 23 will be controversial among readers who follow the party line established by the literal-minded Eustathius. Once we accept the likelihood, however, provided by evidence quite clear once it is pointed out, that the narrator is not as blatant and upfront as we generally assume, Vlahos's case becomes quite plausible. In fact, the traditional view that Penelope is clueless until she performs the bed-trick starts to sound rather naïve and does not do justice to Homer's talent for indirection and subtlety. The argument for early recognition makes …

Clothing The Body Of Christ: An Inquiry About The Letters Of Paul, Martin Connell Jan 2011

Clothing The Body Of Christ: An Inquiry About The Letters Of Paul, Martin Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

In four decades of the reform of Roman Catholic worship after Vatican II, virtually no critical attention has been accorded the New Testament witness about Jesus' or the first-century church's clothing. It's a striking lacuna, for clothing is omnipresent in the New Testament. In this inquiry about clothing, I take up one aspect of the earliest Christian ritual tradition and suggest that ritual clothing has been excised from much of Christian imagination and its academy as a result of Protestant hegemony in biblical and historical criticism. By looking closely at what is said of clothing in the letters of Paul, I …
