A Poem- Inspired By Alex Katz, Margaret Sargent
Colby Magazine
Margaret Sargent '14 wrote this poem last year as an assignment in Introduction to Poetry. The project asked students to write ekphrastic poetry, work that collaborates with visual art, inspired by a piece of their own choosing in the Colby College Museum of Art.
Aram Goudsouzian '94 And The Meredith March, Robert Weisbrot
Aram Goudsouzian '94 And The Meredith March, Robert Weisbrot
Colby Magazine
James Meredith, an African-American Air Force veteran from Mississippi, did not perish during the civil rights protests of the 1960s, but it was not for lack of trying. On Oct. 1, 1962, Meredith became the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi at Oxford, a death-defying step that impelled President Kennedy to send federal marshals and the U.S. Army to keep racist mobs at bay. On June 5, 1966, following passage of a Voting Rights Act that promised federal protection to blacks seeking the ballot, Meredith began a solitary 220-mile March Against Fear from Memphis, Tenn., through Jackson, …
Presenting Bernard Langlais, Gerry Boyle
Presenting Bernard Langlais, Gerry Boyle
Colby Magazine
Hannah Blunt thought she was prepared for the world of Maine sculptor Bernard "Blackie" Langlais.
As a curatorial assistant at the Colby College Museum of Art in 2007, she'd worked with some of his abstract works for a show there. Later she'd used Langlais's (pronounced "Lang-lee") work in graduate school projects at Boston University. But when Blunt moved into the late artist's farmhouse on the Maine coast four years ago, charged with taking stock of the estate left to the College, she was bowled over.
"It was beyond words," said Blunt, now Langlais Curator for Special Projects. "The estimate in …

The Sex Pistols, Nietzsche And The Will Of God: Savas Zembillas's Journey From The Profane To The Sacred, Gerry Boyle
Colby Magazine
Maybe it was the stately stone building on 79th street, just around the corner from Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Or the shoe-tap echo of the marble floors. Or the woman behind the desk, who said Savas Zembillas '79 was in a meeting with "His Eminence" and invited the visitor to have a seat in the foyer next to a silent chapel where gilded icons hung and votive candles flickered.
But somehow it was completely unexpected that in a matter of minutes Zembillas, chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, would be chatting about, among other things, his short but …

Help International Students To Make Friends With Others, Danqing Zhao
Help International Students To Make Friends With Others, Danqing Zhao
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
Recent years increasing international students come to Colby for high education. Colby also did a lot of things to help these students and tried to attract more. However, I notice that most international students spend most times with each other. They understand the importance of communicating with different people but have trouble or dont have chance to make American friends. Getting alone with students from the same culture background is more comfortable than contacting with totally different people. Therefore, Colby may need to do something to improve the relationship between international students and local students. It is also beneficial to …
The Lack Of Meat At Colby And The Barbecue Solution., Tommaso Montagni
The Lack Of Meat At Colby And The Barbecue Solution., Tommaso Montagni
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
One of Colby Colleges dining services most criticized aspects is its lack of meat. Its a problem that has crossed most students minds. Students often talk about wanting freshly cooked meat rather than frozen burgers and the usual piece of chicken. The idea of having a steak and sausage barbecue in the warm spring sun is what Colby students would dream of. I am proposing to set up a permanent tent near Johnson pond and have barbecues Monday though Thursday, each day dedicated to a different class. This would both serve as a great opportunity for the many hungry students …
Failures Of Chivalry And Love In Chretien De Troyes, Adele Priestley
Failures Of Chivalry And Love In Chretien De Troyes, Adele Priestley
Honors Theses
Although chivalry and courtly love have been imposed upon society as a framework for social interaction, Chrétien’s five stories ultimately promote the idea that the individual is top priority, and when involved in courtly love and chivalry each person should remember that they are using these ideals simply as a way to promote themselves.
Beyond Our Conscience: A Proposal For An Improved Model Of Self-Forgiveness, Kelsey M. Park
Beyond Our Conscience: A Proposal For An Improved Model Of Self-Forgiveness, Kelsey M. Park
Honors Theses
The common saying forgive and forget does not do justice to the deep understanding we can gain of ourselves and of others by pursing genuine forgiveness. Philosophers Charles Griswold and Margaret Holmgren propose two models of forgiveness that differ in terms of how we should view our humanity. Griswold suggests that the foundation of genuine forgiveness is recognizing that we are all fallible human beings while Holmgren suggests that our being human makes us all worthy of respect. Both Griswold and Holmgren focus primarily on cases of interpersonal forgiveness and give significantly less attention to cases of self-forgiveness. The lack …
La Puerta A Europa: Percepciones De La Inmigración En Andalucía, Kristin Glasheen
La Puerta A Europa: Percepciones De La Inmigración En Andalucía, Kristin Glasheen
Honors Theses
Illusion Of Control: The Struggle For History And Humanity, Samantha R. Nystrom
Illusion Of Control: The Struggle For History And Humanity, Samantha R. Nystrom
Honors Theses
Through the increased amount of documentation occurring in the individual’s everyday life, through the government, through social media, etc., the question of history’s place in contemporary culture arises—who is the author of history, how is the struggle over authorship played out within contemporary literature, and where does humanity fit within this struggle? I argue that the struggle for authorship within contemporary society has suspended history. Contending authors constantly rewrite the pre-narrative, the event history records, prohibiting society from moving forward. Whoever gains the ultimate authorial role, whoever becomes the author of history, controls humanity. To examine this occurrence within contemporary …

In Search Of Murmurings (Full Score), Luke Martin
In Search Of Murmurings (Full Score), Luke Martin
Honors Theses
"In Search of Murmurings" is deeply indebted to my reading of Marcel Proust's Swann's Way and explores his concept of recombining lost memories in the liminal space of our inner selves. Certain moments in the piece act as aural triggers for memory eruptions into my lost and fragmented experience of past composers' works. As much as this piece is an exploration of Proust, it is also an exploration of myself. By following these memory eruptions, I am departing from the convention, expected, and narrative path; I am asking: what happens when I allow the illogical and non-linear to take control?
Feminicidios En Cd. Juárez: Sombras Del Evanescente Olvido; Luces De Lucha, Fuerza Y Resistencia, Amber Ramirez
Feminicidios En Cd. Juárez: Sombras Del Evanescente Olvido; Luces De Lucha, Fuerza Y Resistencia, Amber Ramirez
Honors Theses
Generational Dream: First Generation American Citizens And Their Relationship To The American Dream, Anna A. Mintz
Generational Dream: First Generation American Citizens And Their Relationship To The American Dream, Anna A. Mintz
Honors Theses
The term the "American Dream" was coined in 1939 by James Truslow Adams and has undoubtedly become an integral part of the American ethos. This narrative has brought thousands of immigrants to American shores with the promises of prosperity and success for centuries. Yet in 2014, it must be questioned whether this dream still holds significance for the young people of this country. By studying first-generation American citizens, whose parents did not grow up here, it can be ascertained how relevant this narrative still is and the sort of power that it retains. The following research describes my interactions with …
La Identidad De Los Carabineros De Chile: The Evolving Identity Of Chile's National Police Force And The 1973 Military Coup, Jeffrey O. Lamson
La Identidad De Los Carabineros De Chile: The Evolving Identity Of Chile's National Police Force And The 1973 Military Coup, Jeffrey O. Lamson
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the evolution of Los Carabineros de Chile, Chile's national police force, from their origins under Carlos Ibáñez in 1927 until their involvement in the 1973 military coup against President Salvador Allende. Various presidencies primarily used this corps during this period as a weapon against popular mobilization and thus influenced the development of the Carabineros' institutional identity. To explore how this identity evolved, this thesis examines primary sources, mostly in the form of newspapers found in the National Archives in Santiago, Chile, that illuminate the Carabineros' relations with the public. The knowledge of the Carabineros' institutional identity contributes …
