Colby's history tightly interweaves with the history of Waterville, yet currently the two communities appear mainly segregated. What causes lay at the root of this detachment, and how can we improve interaction? This research, which is by no means comprehensive, attempts to gain perspective into the developing understanding of the Colby-Waterville relation.

Clivus Composting Toilet Systems At Flag Staff Lake, Chi Do, Grace Baldwin

Clivus Multrum composting toilet systems have been used in homes, parks and commercial buildings as the sole method of treating toilet waste. The composting process is reliable, convenient and safe. Its results are both conservative and productive; water is saved from use as a carriage medium and the fertilizer content in excreta is made available for reuse. The Clivus composting toilet uses aerobic decomposition to slowly break down both urine and feces into stable compounds within the polyethylene composting unit. Our poster will outline the technology and economics behind a Clivus system as part of the course Joules to Dollars.

Mary McLeod Bethune's life is an example of how black women influenced the education of black children. Bethune was able to start her own school at the beginning of the twentieth century and it recent became an accredited university. This project looks how Bethune navigated through institutional racism to get her education, start a school, and educate other black people. This will look at the steps that Bethune took to give black children the best education in Daytona, Florida.

Hercules is one of the most commonly portrayed classical figures in modern culture, with a plethora of movies and television shows depicting his adventures; this popularity is not a modern fad, however, for representations of Hercules have been a constant throughout history. During his career, the Baroque artist Luca Giordano (1634-1705) produced three different versions of Hercules' demise: the Colby Museum of Art's "Hercules on the Funeral Pyre" (1665-1670), "Hercules on the Pyre" (1687-1700) currently in El Escorial, and the Prado Museum's "Hercules on the Pyre" (~1697). This project in progress focuses on the different ways Giordano portrays Hercules' destiny …

I served as the Lighting Designer for the Department of Theater and Dance spring semester production of The Servant of Two Masters. Work encompassed initial conceptual production research through final realized light design objectives in Strider Theater during performances on April 16-18. More specifically, research consisted of textual and visual analysis, computational understanding of the GIO lighting console, stage lighting equipment theory and functionality, color theory, and cueing analysis based on rehearsal outcomes. In the mainstream historical narrative of American social justice movements and organizing, African-American women and their work have too often been marginalized and forgotten, despite the crucial work that they have done.This is a study of African-American Women's social networks and African-American women committed to social change. This study focuses on the lives and works of Mary Church Terrell, Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Dorothy I. Height, and their respective work with the National Association of Colored Womens Club and National Council of Negro Women. For my research paper I would like to write about how African American Sororities originated. In looking at these sororities I would like to report on some of the women who founded these organizations, such as Ethel Hedgeman Lyke, who founded the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Howard University in 1908. I would also like to do research on Charles Robert Samuel Taylor, Pearl Neal, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, and Fannie Pettie who all played a role in founding Zeta Phi Beta at Howard University in 1920.
