Translating The Lesbian Writer : Pierre Loüys, Natalie Clifford Barney, And "Girls Of The Future Society", Tama L. Engelking

When Pierre Louÿs published his Chansons de Bilitis in 1894, he dedicated the volume of prose poems, which he claimed to have translated from the Greek, to "Young Girls of the Future Society." He portrayed his Bilitis as a contemporary of Sappho's whose life story, described in the three parts of the Chansons, takes her from deflowered shepherdess, to lesbian lover, to courtesan. More than a literary hoax or a collection of erotic poems, his Bilitis songs became the inspiration for a young Sapphic writer who embodied those girls of the future to whom Louÿs had dedicated his work, Natalie …

The Spanish language has an important role in the development and growth of the US Catholic Church. Although Spanish is not considered an official language by the U.S. government, the Catholic Church has already made that step in order to maintain the unity and diversity of the institution. During the last decade, the social and liturgical services provided in Spanish have been growing, and the Hispanic presence has been a sign of vitality. The history of the Spanish language within the Catholic liturgy coincides with the use of English as well. However, this path has not been easy and there …

The immense diversity among Latinos has begun to separate instead of unite us, making it difficult for the Latino "voice" to be articulated. prevents homogenous connections from being made among the divergent people that comprise the Latino community. These homogenous connections are necessary in order for the truth about the Latino perspective to be understood: It is as diverse as the people from whom it comes.
