This article is a study of the paradoxical gender representation in two successful French television series broadcasted on a French public channel between 2005 and 2012. By using the concepts of stereotypes, inverted stereotypes, antistereotypes (Macé, 2007) and gender performances (Butler, 1990), it highlights the articulation of a multicultural and sexual perspective with a conservative and normative gender representation.

Ibn Ḥabīb’S Kitāb Al-Muḥabbar And Its Place In Early Islamic Historical Writing, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara

The article examines Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb’s historical writing in Kitāb al-Muḥabbar in terms of chronological narrative arrangements, thematic structure, and historical interconnectedness. A textual analysis of his presentations of prophetic narratives and certain events in pre-Islamic history testifies to the significant role of this work in the evolution of early Islamic historiography. Specifically, the study illustrates that the Muḥabbar constitutes one of the earliest Islamic efforts to reconfigure prophetic materials chronologically and eventually create broader thematic interconnections and universal historical contexts. A comparison between Ibn Ḥabīb’s portrayals of these themes and those of other Muslim scholars also illustrates shifts in …

Joe's Laundry: Using Critical Incidents To Develop Intercultural And Foreign Language Competence In Study Abroad And Beyond, Tama L. Engelking
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The development of intercultural competence and foreign language skills in study abroad and the foreign language (FL) classroom is often seen as an either/or proposition due to lack of time, training or the availability of materials in the target language. The Critical Incident method (CI) provides an example of an intercultural training tool that can link these competencies in ways that are developmentally appropriate for the FL and IC levels of the students. This method uses authentic intercultural mishaps to develop critical thinking skills as students reflect on the cultural values and attitudes underlying the experience. Drawing on research in …
Prefatory Conventions And Invention: Rereading Borges's Prologue To La Invención De Morel, Stephen D. Gingerich
Prefatory Conventions And Invention: Rereading Borges's Prologue To La Invención De Morel, Stephen D. Gingerich
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
Prologues traditionally present works through a series of conventional gestures: introducing the author, providing contextual information and otherwise preparing a reader for proper understanding of the work. In this sense, they appear to reinforce a classic distinction between the philosophical text, whose words efface themselves in the act of understanding and the literary text, which resists such neglect of textuality and demands rereading. In a variety of ways throughout his work, Borges questions the neat distinction between literature and philosophy, and “Prefatory Conventions and Invention” examines how he does this in his prologues. After examining theory of the prologue in …
Exploring The Perceptions Of Novice Spanish Students In Blended Courses, Ana I. Capanegra Phd
Exploring The Perceptions Of Novice Spanish Students In Blended Courses, Ana I. Capanegra Phd
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The present research aims to gauge novice college Spanish students’ perceptions of blended courses to help the design and teaching of blended learning. Blended learning shifts from teacher-centered classes to a learner-centered focus (Hartman, Dziuban & Moskal, 1999; Morgan 2002). There is also more emphasis on peer-to-peer learning (Collis, 2003) since information can be easily shared. The participants of the study had no prior experience taking blended courses. The 14 participants were given an anonymous questionnaire at the end of the semester to explore their perceptions of hybrid learning in order to enhance the set-up of the courses. The questionnaire …

Muslim–Paulician Encounters And Early Islamic Anti-Christian Polemical Writings, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This article investigates the portrayals of the Paulicians in early Islamic sources and specifically analyses the role that Paulician religious views play in Islamic anti-Christian writings. The study also gives insights into the nature of materials that were available to Muslim scholars and the strategies they applied in constructing coherent arguments to refute certain Christian religious beliefs. In doing so, the study touches upon Muslims’ religious needs and scholarly curiosity, which sheds light on their intellectual interactions with non-Islamic religious beliefs and philosophical ideas. The article demonstrates that references to Paulician religious beliefs can be found primarily in early Christian–Islamic …

Origin Narratives And The Making Of Dynastic History In Al-Dīnawarī’S Akhbār, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This article takes the reader on a journey into the historical writing of the ninth century Muslim historian al-Dīnawarī (d. 895) and examines the motives behind composing his al-Akhbār al-ṭiwāl. The themes and narrative arrangements of this work give insight into al-Dīnawarī's historical agenda that demonstrates his interest in royal histories that exemplify the rise and fall of nations, dynasties, and powerful rulers. Al-Dīnawarī's emphasis on specific episodes and events demonstrates that only certain ethnic groups whose political legitimacy derives from a respectable and prominent origin can bring about political and social stability. By dealing with these sociopolitical concerns, …

Ça Commence Aujourd' Hui, Être Et Avoir Et Entre Les Murs: Une Vision Diffractée De L'École Républicaine Française, Annie Jouan-Westlund
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The essay is a detailed cinematic and cultural analysis of Ça commence aujourd'hui by Bertrand Tavernier (1999), Être et Avoir by Nicolas Philibert (2003) and Entre les Murs by Laurent Cantet (2008). It contrasts the cinematic depictions of three French schools in rural, urban, and suburban France. Through a comparison of locations, pedagogy, and student expectation, the essay shows a contrasted and diffracted vision of the French educational system portrayed in the films. In the context of school reforms debated in France, the essay points out the variety and complexity of different schools visualized through the cinematic lens, and it …

Lateralización De /ɾ/ Implosiva: La Conciencia Fonológica Y Sus Manifestaciones En El Español Puertorriqueño Oral Y Escrito (Lateralization Of Syllable Final /ɾ/: Phonological Consciousness And Its Manifestations In Oral And Written Puerto Rican Spanish), Antonio Medina-Rivera
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This study examines the process of lateralization of syllable final / r / in Puerto Rican Spanish. In addition to analyzing the process in oral speech, this study takes into consideration written registers as well. The results show that the process of lateralization goes beyond oral registers among Puerto Rican Spanish. However, the manifestation of the lateral variant does not only occur as a result of neutralization or confusion between 'r' and 'I.' There seems to be a ludic function and evident intentionality in the use of lateral variant, that in some ways shows a mark of identity among Puerto …
The Evolution Of The Term ‘Qarn’ In Early Islamic Sources, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara
The Evolution Of The Term ‘Qarn’ In Early Islamic Sources, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
In modern standard Arabic, recurrences of the term qarn (pl. qurun), of the root q-r-n, revolve around two meanings: a "horn" or "one hundred years."2 The association of qarn with "horn" is borrowed from the animal domain due to the eye-catching sight oft he animal's horns. Hence, the etymology of qarn is based on the notion that two things are situated parallel to each other. This study, however, will not examine the first meaning of qarn, but instead focus on the second. The attestations of qarn in early Islamic sources point to a composite term that retained a wide range …

The article examines the representations of the story of Roman emperor, Julian the Apostate (r. 361-363), in early Islamic historical writing and the channels of information that Muslims writers used to construct this narrative. The study is a comparative analysis of pertinent Islamic accounts in terms of narrative strategies, sources (Arabic, Persian, Syriac, and Greek), and methodology. In so doing, this study provides a constructive framework that enhances our understanding the historical agendas of these Muslim historians as well as the cultural discourses against which they wrote. The study also reflects on the early stages of the incorporation of Greco-Roman …

Officialization And Linguistic Acculturation Of Spanish In The United States Catholic Church, Antonio Medina-Rivera
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The present investigation brings to light some of the changes associated with the use of English and Spanish in the US Catholic Church. The first part is an examination of the process of officialization from a historical perspective, acknowledging the impact of some groups or associations in the use of vernacular la!_lguages within the Church. The second part examines the role of acculturation during this process of officialization; and the final section analyzes the use of inclusive language in the Church, as an attempt to have a more gender-balanced institution. These three elements serve to provide a more complete perspective …

Variationist Approaches: External Factors Conditioning Variation In Spanish Phonology, Antonio Medina-Rivera
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This chapter will focus on the external factors conditioning phonological variation. I will introduce the traditional factors to analyze social variation (e.g. sex, age, social class) and stylistic variation (careful vs. casual speech), as well as other possible factors not fully explored in Spanish. These other factors are mostly inspired by Allan Bell's model of language style as audience design (1984), and Rickford and McNair-Knox's incorporation of addressee and topic of conversation as two important factors to analyze variation (1994).

Translating The Lesbian Writer : Pierre Loüys, Natalie Clifford Barney, And "Girls Of The Future Society", Tama L. Engelking
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
When Pierre Louÿs published his Chansons de Bilitis in 1894, he dedicated the volume of prose poems, which he claimed to have translated from the Greek, to "Young Girls of the Future Society." He portrayed his Bilitis as a contemporary of Sappho's whose life story, described in the three parts of the Chansons, takes her from deflowered shepherdess, to lesbian lover, to courtesan. More than a literary hoax or a collection of erotic poems, his Bilitis songs became the inspiration for a young Sapphic writer who embodied those girls of the future to whom Louÿs had dedicated his work, Natalie …

The Spanish language has an important role in the development and growth of the US Catholic Church. Although Spanish is not considered an official language by the U.S. government, the Catholic Church has already made that step in order to maintain the unity and diversity of the institution. During the last decade, the social and liturgical services provided in Spanish have been growing, and the Hispanic presence has been a sign of vitality. The history of the Spanish language within the Catholic liturgy coincides with the use of English as well. However, this path has not been easy and there …

The article discusses the book "Del pozo y del numa (un ensayo y una leyenda)," by Spanish author Juan Benet. The book is a critical analysis of the work of German novelist Thomas Mann. The article explores the similarities between the two writers, and while Benet was disappointed in Mann's opus "Joseph and His Brothers," both writers were accustomed to include philosophical digressions in their works. The article also mentions Benet's love-hate relationship with literary criticism.
