The Role Of The Lute In Sixteenth-Century Consorts: Evidence From Terzi's Intabulations, Suzanne Court Jan 1995

The Role Of The Lute In Sixteenth-Century Consorts: Evidence From Terzi's Intabulations, Suzanne Court

Performance Practice Review

RILM abstract: "In his Venetian lute books of 1593 and 1599, Giovanni Antonio Terzi did not define the frequently used terms contrappunto and concerto, which are assigned to ensemble-intabulation lute parts. An attempt to clarify their meanings helps determine intended functions within ensembles. It appears that Terzi's ensemble intabulations were conceived in a purely instrumental context, and that the two distinct styles for lute are written manifestations of foundation and ornamental functions in ensembles, such as described by Agostino Agazzari (1607). Both in terms of the possibilities for instrumentation and the explicit examples of elaborating and foundation lute arrangements, Terzi's …

The Performance Of Roman Sacred Polyphonic Music In The Late Sixteenth And Early Seventeenth Centuries: Evidence From Archival Sources, Noel O'Regan Jan 1995

The Performance Of Roman Sacred Polyphonic Music In The Late Sixteenth And Early Seventeenth Centuries: Evidence From Archival Sources, Noel O'Regan

Performance Practice Review

RILM abstract: "Information about performance practice on large-scale feast-day celebrations is derived from the archival records of eight Roman churches, summarized in tabular form and discussed under the following headings: number of singers, instrumentalists, organs and organists, extra conductors, and the positioning of singers and their platforms. While practices varied considerably among institutions, some common ground is established."

Book Review: Eloquent Obsessions: Writing Cultural Criticism, James Morrison Jan 1995

Book Review: Eloquent Obsessions: Writing Cultural Criticism, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

An initial impression of Eloquent Obsessions is that of a heady randomness, a bracing variety, from accounts of personal intellectual history to more conventional critical forays, from lively autobiography to trenchant polemic. It is, perhaps, only on second thought, once that impression of randomness settles into a more legibly systematic pattern, that the book's real significance begins to emerge.

Bazi-Ha-Ye Nameyeshi: Iranian Women's Theatrical Plays, Anthony Shay Jan 1995

Bazi-Ha-Ye Nameyeshi: Iranian Women's Theatrical Plays, Anthony Shay

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Iranian women's comic improvised traditional theatre is a rich and important, but little-known, source of performative and textual material that has been rarely documented or discussed by serious students of folklore and dance, either in Iran or in the West. I argue that this amateur theatrical form performed and created by women for other women is the single most important source representing the multivocality of traditional Iranian women of all classes. Both in content and performance, these theatrical plays or games are a unique form of expression that needs several analytic approaches to elucidate its meaning and place in women's …

Reading Texts As Reading Ourselves: A Chapter In The History Of African American Biblical Interpretation, Vincent L. Wimbush Jan 1995

Reading Texts As Reading Ourselves: A Chapter In The History Of African American Biblical Interpretation, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Literature, especially religious literature, ideally aims to trigger degrees of empathy in readers who share a particular universe of meaning, with the goal of entertaining, provoking, challenging, and persuading. The literary text that has achieved something of the status of a "classic" is one that has consistently--that is, "beyond its time...beyond its space"--proved to be engaging and empathetic, consistently challenging and inspiring the spirit, provoking thoughts and arresting the imagination of those generally sharing a universe of meaning, or culture. But such texts, precisely because of their empathy-producing qualities, should also inspire among readers again and again over time a …

The Bible And African-American Culture, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The history of the influence, uses, and functions of the Bible among African Americans is dramatic and complex, and reflects the different, sometimes conflicting, sociopolitical and religious self-understandings, orientations, and aspirations of a dominant segment, if not the great majority, of African Americans.

The Female Body As Icon: Edna Millay Wears A Plaid Dress, Cheryl Walker Jan 1995

The Female Body As Icon: Edna Millay Wears A Plaid Dress, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

The female body has never been so prominently displayed or so critically examined as it is today under the dominance of late capitalism. The results of this display, we can now see, have been mostly negative: women regard themselves at best self-consciously, at worst with disgust. Given this emphasis on self-scrutiny, it comes as no surprise that middle-aged women experience a reduction of self-confidence regarding their physical presences and a concomitant increase in self-dissatisfaction. It is also worth noting that a querulous tone often afflicts them as they grow older, suggesting that they are at odds not only with others …
