The collection of the YWCA of Brooklyn contains materials from the organization since its opening in 1888, until the records were transferred to Brooklyn College in 2010. These records span nearly 125 years, and include documents related to administration, governance, finance, legal cases, facilities, security, educational and health programs, publications, IT and telecommunications, public relations, events, photographs, newspaper clippings, multi-media, and ephemera.

Of particular importance for this collection are the minutes and reports: they document the trajectory of this institution, as well as the ways they fought to help meet the needs of the community of Brooklyn through the years. …

Annie Smith Peck (1850-1935), scholar, lecturer, and mountaineer, was born in Providence, R. I. After graduating in 1868 from the Rhode Island Normal School she became a school teacher but sought to continue her education as her brothers had done. In 1874 she enrolled at the University of Michigan, which began to admit women students only a few years before. She graduated in 1878 majoring in Greek and classical languages and went on to receive a master's degree in 1881. Still wishing to deepen her studies, Peck left for Greece and became the first woman to attend the American …

The Brooklyn College Student War Correspondence collection, consists of .75 cubic feet of documents pertaining to the challenges, hopes, fears and experiences faced by Brooklyn College soldiers during World War II. Arranged in alphabetical order, there are about 69 students whose correspondence has been preserved. Besides letters, soldiers also mailed back home picture postcards, musical compositions, and dramatized skits and whatever artistic talent they were able to produce during the hour of war. The Brooklyn College Country Fair was instituted in 1938 as a way to raise money for the Student Loan and Scholarship Fund as well as a way to promote relations between the various student-social organizations on campus. The elements of the Country Fair drew upon the history of the Brooklyn College campus, which had originally been a rural field area that hosted various sporting events as well as the Barnum and Bailey Circus once-a-year. Following the 1898 Spanish-American War, the Kings County United Spanish War Veterans was founded in 1904, with various posts [Chapters] for the Brooklyn soldiers that fought in the war. These camps were open to all military personnel who served during the Spanish-American War and had either been honorably discharged or continued to serve. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Read family moved to the newly built suburban style neighborhood of Ditmas Park in Brooklyn. With his wife Elinor Mathews, Walter Read raised his family of two children, daughter Viola and son Lloyd, at their home at 745 Rugby Road. Social life was pleasant for the Reads. Dwight-White House was part of the House Plan Association (HPA) at Brooklyn College. The HPA was founded in 1937 and developed into the largest co-ed social organization at Brooklyn College. At its height, 170 individual Houses were part of HPA which had its own newspaper entitled The Calling Card. By 1961, with over 2,500 members, HPA comprised the largest student organization on any campus in the country.
