Avoidance Of L2 English Phrasal Verbs By L1 Thai Learners, Punyavee Kosolsombat, Nattama Pongpairoj

Journal of Letters

The purpose of this study is to investigate L1 Thai learners'avoidance behavior with respect to English phrasal verbs. L2 learners are assumed to avoid an L2 feature that is different from or does not exist in their L1 (Schachter 1974; Kleinmann 1978; Liao and Fukuya 2004). Itis hypothesized that L1 Thai learners would prefer using single-word equivalents to phrasal verbs, and if anavoidance occurred, they would avoid using figurative phrasal verbs more than literal ones due to their figurative meanings. Theresearch participants were 52 university students of intermediate proficiency level .The data were elicited by administering a comprehension task, followed …

The Semantics Of The Preposition Khɔ̌Ɔŋ In Thai(ความหมายของคำว่า ของ ในฐานะคำบุพบทในภาษาไทย), Sorn Abngern, Kingkarn Thepkanjana

Journal of Letters

It is known among Thai language users that the preposition khɔ̌ɔŋin Thai is used to express possessive relations between two entities. The concept that readily comes to mind when the language users think about "possession" is ownership. The purpose of thispaper is, therefore, to identify the possible semantic relations between possessed nouns and possessor noun phrases in nominal constructions with the preposition khɔ̌ɔŋin Thai. The 2,700data were collected from the Thai National Corpus. It was found that the semantic relations expressed by the possessive …

Thai native speakers can also use /plàaw/at the beginning of a sentence or use it solely in response to conversationsnaturally and may not even notice its syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties. This paper aims to study the three stated properties ofthe negative form, /plàaw/, in the second or responding turn in conversations. However, /plàaw/, which is part of question particles; /plàaw/, which is part of fixed expressions such as/rɨ̌kɔ̂plàaw/; and /plàaw/, which means 'empty or nothing else but itself',such as /klɔ̀ŋ plàaw/and /khâaw plàaw/, …

Opening Urban Social Spaces Through The Arts, Lasanthi Manaranjanie, Kalinga Dona

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Ongoing turbulences in many parts of the world, which raise concerns about the lack of security and an uncertain future, could also be seen as a challenge providing a plethora of opportunities in the search for better systemic solutions. Even though we live in a technologically developed world, it is clear that neither improved machines nor the pharmaceutical industry could provide sustainable solutions to conflicts and their negative consequences on human lives and values. Could the arts and music in particular, provide a cross cultural understanding beyond their sole aesthetic impact and contribute to a betterment of the circumstances? This …

Industry 4.0 - Where Does This Leave The Human Factor?, Holger Kinzel

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Industry 4.0 is the new buzzword in the manufacturing industry. It comprises the entire value chain process in manufacturing goods and providing services. The designers of the concept appear to have a good grip on the technology (hardware and software) of the system, however, the human factor seems not to be considered adequately. Humans are involved everywhere: as a team of system designers, a groups of workers and our society as the clients of the manufactured goods. The requirements and needs of each individual involved in the process should be included in the system by means of a modified mediation …

A Walk Along The Royal Road: Prague, Tourists, And Music Commodification, Zuzana Jurková, Hana Cernáková

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This article focuses on a typical phenomenon in contemporary Prague - art music concerts for - mostly foreign - tourists which are presented here as a crystallized example of music commodification connected with mass tourism. As source material, two ethnographic snapshots are used, the first one describing a walk along the Royal Road with the most intense circulation of tourists, the second capturing an exemplary concert at the Prague castle, the most popular tourist venue. The first snapshot thus reveals methods of advertising (including the function of the locality), the second, the way in which the main subject - music …

The Role Of Frequency On The Acquisition Of L2 English Infinitive And Gerund Complements By L1 Thai Learners, Raksina Keawchaum, Nattama Pongpairoj

PASAA

This study investigated how frequency influenced acquisition of L2 English infinitive and gerund complements among L1 Thai learners. Participants were separated into low and high proficiency groups based on their CU-TEP scores. Each group consisted of 30 participants. Data were collected using the Word Selection Task (WST) and the Grammaticality Judgement Test (GJT). Initial findings revealed that L1 Thai learners acquired infinitive complements before gerund complements. This could probably be explained by the usage-based theory, specifically, the concept of type frequency. It was assumed that learners acquired infinitive complements first because they were considered a high type frequency construction, and …

Building A Culture Of Peace Through Critical Literacy With The Net Generation, Dumrong Adunyarittigun Jul 2017

Building A Culture Of Peace Through Critical Literacy With The Net Generation, Dumrong Adunyarittigun

PASAA

Conflicts and violence either inside or outside the classroom can affect the quality of learning within the classroom. Critical literacy is proposed as a strategic instructional practice which aims at teaching a nation's citizens to be literate and raising their critical and social consciousness (Freire, 2007). This paper suggests how teachers, as intellectual labor (Smyth, 2011), can implement a critical literacy framework to build a culture of peace in a reading class where students hold different 'taken-for-granted' ideologies of being 'us' and 'them'. It also proposes how Net Generation students in our EFL classrooms can make a significant contribution to …

More Heads Are Better Than One: Peer Editing In A Translation Classroom Of Efl Learners, Sakolkarn Insai, Tongtip Poonlarp

PASAA

During the process of translation, students need to learn how to detect and correct errors in their translation drafts, and collaboration among themselves is one possible way to do this. As Pym (2003) has explained, translation is a process of problem-solving; translators must be able to decide which choices are more or less appropriate for the specified purpose of translation. Therefore, it is necessary for the teacher to create a learning environment that facilitates the students, not only to learn how to solve the problems, but also to be exposed to other possible solutions of those problems. This paper aims …

Preference In Hiring Interpreters- An Insight Into Recruiters' Persective A Case Study On Recruiters In A German Internatinal Organisation In Thailand, Nalina Hiranprueck

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research seeks to build upon the issue of recruiter's expectation toward interpreters, which is the realm less explored. As evident in previous research, criteria and expectations towards interpreters deviate among different stakeholders and user groups with different backgrounds. Though the major findings remained quite similar when it comes to the main criteria, the level of expectations is largely less among users of interpreting services, when compared to the interpreters. Thus, one can expect that recruiters are likely to anticipate differently than other stakeholders. This study is designed to understand the underlying rationality of interpreter recruiters in their choice of …
