Art As A Mechanism For Enhancing Social Accessibility, Shin Nakagawa

Journal of Urban Culture Research

"Art Access and Advocacy," the theme of Urban Research Plaza's 11th international forum, implies the development of access channels through the arts, which enable the participation of socially disadvantaged persons in social activities and ultimately result in the making of a highly communal society. In this article, I will discuss the social context from which this theme emerged. In addition, I will consider the importance of arts management in a few concrete examples.

Three sculptures in concrete will become functioning boats, shaped as female figures. (12 meters in length and 3m above the water's surface). - Propelled by electric motors, charged by alternative energy. Life-Boats will sail, with captains and passengers, on the European canals, leading them through the heart of the cities. These sailing sculptures will connect the countries through a cultural exchange - which has always been a part of the history of Europe. This project is about meetings - about receiving foreign expressions - about daring to move into unknown territory and communicate on the basis of common grounds. There …

Artists & Creativity In Urban Placemaking: Re!Ections On A Downtown Minneapolis Cultural District, Tom Borrup

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Participatory city planning led by artists was not in the sightlines of Geddes or Mumford when modern planning practices were born. A century-long trend brings increased requirements and expectations of participation by public stakeholders and growth in neighborhood and district-level planning. Increasingly complex urban environments require cross-sector collaboration and cross-cultural dialogue, in addition to understanding a multitude of culturally specific ways people use public and private spaces. Challenges to the profession grow as the role of planner evolves from engineer to facilitator. This paper reviews these trends as well as recent scholarly work calling for more involvement of creative voices …

Projects that resolve social issues through the arts have been acknowledged and practiced worldwide. Community Dance is one such art project. It began in the 70's in England as a new extension to the social function of dance in regenerating the community, in which community members shared concerns together and negotiated these issues via communication through dance. This study focuses on Community Dance in Sapporo, Japan where diverse activities and projects have been active since 2010. It includes …

Pmi - A Tool For Student Reflection, Ubon Sanpatchayapong Jul 2013

Pmi - A Tool For Student Reflection, Ubon Sanpatchayapong

PASAA

This idea-sharing paper is written from my own teaching experience with tertiary level students who studied English for Specific Purposes (ESP). These courses were English foundation subjects, and they were mandatory for first- and second-year students at my university. I used PMI (de Bono, 1993) with year one students to get their reflection after class in order to learn about their problems, progress, and reactions toward each class so that I could understand them and could give them relevant facilitation. Though I took care of more than one class each semester, I will focus on solely a class I have …

Politeness Strategies In Research Articles: A Cross-Disciplinary Study, Kunyarut Getkham

PASAA

This corpus-based study investigates cross-disciplinary differences in the use of politeness strategies in research articles (RAs). The corpus consists of thirty-six RAs from applied linguistics, educational technology, and economics journals published in the year 2009. The data were statistically analyzed. Findings indicate that in academic/ research writing, writers employed both positive and negative politeness strategies when expressing opinions but the negative politeness strategies, especially impersonality devices and hedges, were the most frequently used by writers of RAs in the three disciplines. The use of impersonality and the use of hedging devices play a vital part in RAs especially in the …

When Affective Factors Change: A Corpus-Based Analysis Of Students' Reflections In English E-Portfolios, Wasana Phasomyard, Pattamawan Jimarkon, Sonthida Keyuravong

PASAA

Affective factors can play an important role in learning and may change over time. This paper investigates emotional states of first-year engineering students towards self-study experience through words associated with affect used in their reflections in eportfolios over a semester. The study employed a corpusbased analysis by focusing on keywords of affect with the statistical criteria and analyzing the context those keywords occurred in. To uncover the students' recurrent feelings, the concordance lines for each keyword were further analyzed qualitatively to identify each of them into a category of pre-determined affective factors. Then, relative frequencies of each instance of each …

Considerations In Performance-Based Language Assessment: Rating Scales And Rater Training, Bordin Chinda

PASAA

Performance-based assessment has gained more attention from ELT practitioners since the actual performances produced by students are evaluated in this type of assessment. However, the assessment of students' performances involves more complicated procedures when compared with more traditional testing methods. This paper, therefore, points out crucial considerations in adopting this type of assessment in a language class. First, the article introduces the concepts of performance-based language assessment and its major characteristics. Then, the two main characteristics: rating scales and rater training are discussed. In the rating scales section, different types of rating scales, as well as approaches in developing rating …

Practicing And Conducting Oral Tests In The Classroom, David Evans, John Herbert Jul 2013

Practicing And Conducting Oral Tests In The Classroom, David Evans, John Herbert

PASAA

There are many directions that English language teaching approaches have taken in the past, including the grammar translation method, direct method, audio-lingual approach, and communicative teaching (Crystal, 2007, pp.437-440). Following on from the communicative approach that became popular in the 1970s, we have seen a move towards content-based teaching, and content and language integrated learning (CLIL). Moreover, as the concepts of English as an international language (EIL) and English as a lingua franca (ELF) grow in importance, the debate over which kind of English we should be teaching continues. In spite of the changing English teaching context, in many institutions …

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In the recent years, following the boom of the cultural policies at the international level, Thailand has turned to place its emphasize on the idea of "cultural and creative industries" at the academic and policy-making level especially in its art and design institutions. Academic disciplines in arts management, information and technology, communication arts, media studies, and economics are developing into the world where they can be blended together into multiple levels of knowledge management. The policy development, and implementation plans are embracing these industries into its national platforms, integrating the culture and economics together. It will illustrate this from three projects - a Singing for Well-being choir, the Space for Peace event in Winchester Cathedral and a local community pageant. The Concept Of Buddhas In The Karandavyuha Sutra, Minkwan Chaiyapong

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The objective of this research is to see how the concept of Avalokitesvara and Buddhas is explained in the Karanaavyuha Sutra. To do so, I shall study and analyze the ideas regarding the Buddhas, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Adibuddha as found in the Karandavyuha Sutra. The Karandavyuha Sutra is one of the primary sources of Mahayana Buddhism composed in Sanskrit, which has been used as the basis for both teaching and practicing Buddhism in many different Mahayana schools. In Tibetan Buddhism, in particular, the Karandavyuha Sutra is one of the most significant texts, because it is the source from which the …

In general, Filipinos were more direct than Thais when dealing with refusals. Thais were less direct than Filipinos when declining the interlocutor of higher status. As language and culture are intimately related, English refusal strategies used by …

A Corpus-Based Study Of The Style In Jane Austen's Novels, Raksangob Wijitsopon

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

While a corpus linguistic technique has been applied to various studies in text and discourse analysis, it has not been much adopted in stylistic analysis of literary texts. The present study, therefore, applies a corpus-driven approach to Jane Austen's six major novels, in order to see how well this new method works with literary texts, compared with what has been observed in previous studies of Jane Austen's language. It has been found that the corpus-driven approach can provide quite a few results that are useful in supporting and refining literary scholars' intuitive observations on the author's works. Some of the …

The Representation Of Consumerism And Identity Formation In Contemporary Thai Literature, Suradech Chotiudompant

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

As contemporary Thai society has become deeply enmeshed in consumerism and capitalism, with consumption now having been integrated as a way of life, Thai literature, especially those short stories written in the past decade, has touched upon the issue of consumerism in various degrees and aspects. This essay aims to investigate two major issues. Firstly, it aims to analyze how these short stories represent consumerism, especially its mechanisms that affect the daily lives of Thai people and their relationships. Secondly, it aims to shed light on the relationship between consumerism and identity politics as it appears in these short stories, …

Tabi-Tabi Po: Situating The Narrative Of The Supernatural In The Context Of The Philippines Community Development, Paolo Miguel Vicerra, Jem Javier

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Folklore, such as the narratives of the supernatural, functions as a vehicle for elements of culture such as belief systems, ideologies and shared memories. This study explores the changes undergone by Philippine narratives of the supernatural vis-à-vis the urban development of the community where they thrive. It is demonstrated that the characters of the narratives of the supernatural are perceived to be of equal or even higher stature than those of members of the rural communities. With the locality experience changes brought about by urbanisation, this folklore is inevitably modified to suit the people's environment and sensibilities, by reappropriating new …

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The paper aims to investigate how Bangkok is represented in contemporary Thai literature, including those works by such authors of renown as Chamlong Fangcholachit, Prabda Yoon, and Paritas Hutangkul. Through the perspectives of these contemporary authors, Bangkok has been used as a poignant setting to showcase the problems and conditions of urbanism in Thailand. The paper aims to focus on three main issues of representation, which are not completely separated but closely intertwined: (1) Bangkok as a hub of globalization, where cultural forces, especially those from the West, clash with local knowledge and wisdom; (2) Bangkok as a major tourist …
