The Psalms are for all of us! Whether we love classical organ music or jazz, contemporary praise music or global songs, the Psalms provide a deep well of instruction and inspiration. In our work at the Worship Institute over the past year, we have been deeply encouraged regarding the use of biblical Psalms in new churches, traditional churches, contemporary churches, urban churches, military bases, nursing homes, and hospitals.

Service Of Praise And Morning Plenary Session, Calvin Institute Of Christian Worship

Symposium on Worship Archive

Booklet containing an outline for a morning worship service focused on praise and based on Psalm 8, followed by an introduction to a morning plenary session featuring Dorothy Bass.

Our four plenary worship services this year are based on Psalms, each reflecting a different dimension of prayer. Each service is stylistically quite distinct, yet each includes many common elements. Though many participants may be prompted to prepare a series of services, sermons, or worship committee devotionals based on these four services, our primary goal is not to offer model services for analysis or replication. Rather, we pray that these services …

Symposium on Worship Archive

A brochure for the Space and Spirit exhibit in association with the 2005 Calvin Symposium on Worship.

What constitutes a sacred space or a sacred place? Furthermore, if by definition sacred space is where one meets God, then many other questions beg to be asked. Does God designate this place or do we? Do we set the criteria for sacred place or is it revealed to us? If God is everywhere, are all spaced sacred? How does one move into or experience sacred place?

This exhibition represents a range of responses to such questions by artists throughout the United States, …

The Decree Of Redemption Is In Effect: A Covenant David Dickson And The Covenant Of Redemption, Carol A. Williams Jan 2005

The Decree Of Redemption Is In Effect: A Covenant David Dickson And The Covenant Of Redemption, Carol A. Williams

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

While a significant amount of study has been devoted to the twofold system of covenants of works and grace, development of the threefold covenant system in Reformed theology of the seventeenth century that includes the pactum salutis has not been thoroughly researched. The doctrine of the intratrinitarian covenant between the Father and the Son concerning the whole work of redemption has been characterized in some secondary literature as speculative, unbiblical, the result of faulty exegesis, crassly contractual, a deviation from the pure teaching of the Reformers, and of dubious value. Moreever, these claims of discontinuity and questionable origin of pactum …

Christ And The Covenant: Francis Turretin's Federal Theology As A Defense Of The Doctrine Of Grace, Mark Beach

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

The subject of this dissertation is Francis Turretin's federal theology as a defense of the doctrine of grace. Specifically, it deals with Turretin's exposition of the twofold covenant of God--that is, the covenant of nature and the covenant of grace. In treating this subject, the dissertation has a twofold objective--first, to conitribute to an understanding of the theology of Turretin; second, to offer an evaluation regarding the validity of certain trajectories of scholarship pertaining to federal theology in general. This study, in its analysis and exposition of Turretin's understanding of the twofold covenant, deals with several issues that have arisen …

Teaching French Film In A Christian Context: Cédric Klapisch’S Un Air De Famille, Jolene Vos-Camy

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Often, when viewing a foreign-language film, students are unable to pick up subtle cultural cues essential to the film’s message. If, however, students are well-prepared for a film, they become perceptive critics of the larger themes represented in the film. In this article I address pedagogical issues surrounding the use of Cédric Klapisch’s film, Un air de famille [Family Resemblances] based on my experience in teaching a new interdisciplinary course at Calvin College.
