From birth--possibly even before birth--the amount and array of external stimuli profoundly affect a child’s cognitive and linguistic development. In addition to verbal communication from parent to child, singing proves to be an integral aid to a child’s development of speech and language, allegedly due to repetitions of words and rhythms. Nursery rhymes are, from infancy, among the most commonly presented forms of musical stimulus for children. The repetitive nature of the nursery rhymes undoubtedly supports language and speech development, but various characteristics of nursery rhymes, specifically pitch interval, meter, phrase length, contour, and harmony, also contribute substantially to the …

This report will discuss the process of creating a digital sample based library for musical applications. Topics such as recording, microphone placement, and mixing will be addressed; as well as elements of design in Adobe Photoshop, and computer scripting in the language of the computer program Komplete 5 by Native Instruments. The instrument sampled is the crotales, an orchestral, melodic percussion instrument.

From Unsung To High-Strung: The Development Of The Viola Through The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, As It Is Used To Introduce Fugues, Anthony Vincent Dell'osso

This paper looks at the development of the viola through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and considers why it has been used to introduce fugues more and more often. The viola has historically been an unimportant filler instrument, but beginning in the nineteenth century, and continuing to the present day, it has been given an increasingly important role in contrapuntal orchestral and chamber music. This study considers twelve pieces in which a fugue is launched by the viola.
